Holding US cards should generally not mean you have to file US taxes. Should you receive a 1099 tax form for earning referral points, you may have some US tax obligations.

I'd also argue the other side where Canadian card perks/sign up bonuses pale in comparison that it makes sense to diversify into US cards for use internationally.

@@Audittheauditors2 really depends how much you travel and what you want out of it. For me, the bonvoy brilliant was a great addition. 185k points, platinum status for free breakfast, late check out and hotel lounge access all made it worth it

Fortunately, the exchange rate for these fx-fee-free cards are close to spot rate, so the only exchange fee many Canadians have to deal with is when transferring cash from Canada to the USA.

It's situational, but you bet the Cobalt card will be in many people's list.

Remember the multipliers are on USD not CAD. So the 4x is not actually 4x. The cobalt is still much better. Then you have to deal with the transferring of CAD to USD to pay off your card. This can be done cheap by using norbets gambit but it is time consuming. US cards are only good for the welcome bonus.

You are missing the extra travel partners. Opens a world of possibilities. What is that worth ? I was in Chicago may long weekend going back to yvr was 60k business on AC. I booked delta business for just over 30k points. Over $1000 cad would have costed and not possible without my us Amex gold

You are correct on the CAD/USD multipliers. However the superior transfer ratios, more frequent transfer bonuses, and greater selection of transfer partners can still make using a US card a viable option. Also consider that most US American Express cards do not charge foreign transaction fees, so it can be a great option when travelling internationally.

It is hard to put an "Absolute" term to this answer, but generally no. You may utilize some 3rd party company like Plastiq, which charges a processing fee, but they may be able to issue you the checks you need to pay to your bank for the mortgage payment. Kindly double check with these 3rd party companies.

Some do, some don’t. The US American Express Gold card earns 4x at restaurants worldwide, where the 4x at grocery stores is only valid at US supermarkets.

It’s not difficult at all. It’s the same process as applying for a Canadian credit card.
