Don't really recommend doing the prepaid mastercard with an Amex too frequently because Amex will catch on and close your account since it's against their policy to do so.

If you are with rogers/fido/shaw, using their rogers MC is the best card to use shopping at Costco. 2% cashback on a mastercard is unbeatable when it comes to Costco. No activation fees for prepaid visis/mc, no annual fees, nothing. Just a flat 2% on ALL purchases. Its a no brainer.

Last I heard, if you buy prepaid Mastercards at a grocery store, it's no longer 5x, unlike groceries and Amazon/Canadian Tire etc gift cards. Has that changed?

Unlike the U.S., Canadian merchants do not get data that shows each specific item you buy. They only know that you spent $523.67 for example at the grocery store. With today's food prices that is not out of line and will not raise any red flags. If you are buying a $500 Visa or Mastercard gift card, make sure you also buy something else. I don't know what the Visa service charge is for buying one of their gift cards, but let's say it is $7.95. It is not wise to let a charge go through of $507.95. That would be too easy for the bank's software to spot a gift card purchase. Add another item or two. Also, if you are buying gift cards at a grocery store for the 5X per dollar spent on a credit card, don't buy more than one at a time. Get one each time you shop. Remember you can get them for Amazon, Esso, PetroCan and dozens more. Using this strategy and really boost your points balance.

the question is: why should you redeem it for anything else other than rogers/fido/shaw services if you have them? Does it limit the amount of redemption value you can do? I dont see why would anyone redeem the cashback for anything else and lose the 1% redemption bonus. Maybe I am missing something here, but I dont see any difference here, because at the end of the days, cash back is money back, and that's the same regardless of what transaction you redeem it on.

  • @PrinceofTravel

    2 ай бұрын

So let me turn the question back to you just so we can make this more interactive. How many points do you earn by using Visa Aeroplan when you spend in costco website? VS, how many do you earn when you spend with your cobalt in grocery store? And how many aeroplan points can you get per amex points? Once you find the answer, it's quite mindblowing. As oppose to giving a straight answer to our viewers, we want to help and teach them the skills needed to navigate through this points and miles industry. Hope you are onboard with this :)

So I went to longos and noticed that the activation fee increases as you buy a higher limit GC. At $4.95 for $100 GC, you are just matching the return with the cobalt at x5 ( assuming you are redeeming at .01). Let me know if there's another approach.

I feel baited by the thumbnail of seeing someone use a cobalt card at Costco and the only thing mentioned towards this is “buy a prepaid card with your amex so you can shop at Costco”. Is it even worth it compared to just using an aeroplan visa? What’s the breakdown between the two when there’s an activation fee you need to pay with the prepaid
