Pythagoras was an ancient Greek mathematician, philosopher, and thinker who lived from 570 - 495 BC. He is also the founder of the Pythagorean School philosophy, which made him one of the most important and influential figures in mathematics and philosophy.
Pythagoreanism is the name given to the school of thought that developed among the followers of Pythagoras. The main ideas of this school include: the immortality of the soul, metempsychosis (the transmigration of souls), and ethical vegetarianism (although current historians suspect he ever promoted total vegetarianism).
His main philosophy revolved around numbers, geometry, and music. He believed that everything in nature could be expressed as ratios or numbers. He also believed that numbers were more than just abstract concepts-they were real things that existed in nature. He thought they were divine and could be used to understand the workings of the universe better than ever before.
Pythagoras is best known for his Pythagorean theorem, which states that the square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. In addition to his influential theorem, he also made many contributions to astronomy, medicine, and music theory. Also, he was the first to classify the world's climate into five zones.
As a part of his incredibly influential contribution to music theory, he invented the monochord-a stringed instrument that creates one note at a time by moving its ends up or down-and created a system for tuning it using ratios of whole numbers (1:2).
The most important part of Pythagoras' life in forming his philosophy, was when he left his home city of Samos to go study with another philosopher named Thales (who was also incredibly influential). While there, they developed some groundbreaking ideas about math and science together-but unfortunately we don't really know what those ideas were because there aren't any records left from their time together! Some people believe that these two philosophers influenced each other so much that they invented geometry together!
His work has influenced a vast number of mathematicians, philosophers, thinkers, and scientists in a variety of fields ranging from astronomy, and geometry to medicine, music theory… basically everything! Many philosophers such as Aristotle, who later shaped and developed western philosophy, credited him with being one of his intellectual mentors during his early years at Plato's Academy.
