I love the work you're doing and I'm excited to see you get started building. I'm still not sure why you want the drums to play at different speeds though. I would think you would want the option for all of the drums to play at any given speed rather than a set relative speed to each other. It would also be an opportunity to affix a sort of modular transmission unit to each programming wheel which would also give you another lever to play with, switching gears during a performance. This could allow cool solos for any of the instruments.

Since you have the spread sheet already, code the output cells to color code based on values. Red is no go, yellow is situational or cutting it close (if this applies to mm3) then green or no color is good. That way you don't have to read numbers to know if you're okay and you remove the risk of reading them or remembering them wrong

Remember, Martin, in your quest for "tight" music, don't lose sight of the most important feature: A Marble Machine that _won't self-destruct._ • Marble-Machine 1 shook itself apart as you were making the original video. • The MMX had plastic pipes rupturing, marbles getting jammed in moving parts, and so on. That is what actually killed the MMX: it self-destructed during testing, making The Quest for Perfection utterly irrelevant. Also, remember: the MMX took so much effort to power that you needed to motorize it! The MM3 needs to be _playable,_ or all if this Quest for Tight Timing becomes irrelevant. Don't lost sight of these: playability and will-not-self-destruct.

Pay attention to the power transmission parts, especially that long shaft. It may be worth a quick calc to check what size and material are necessary so that you don’t get major twisting motion deformation under load. That might affect the synchronization on your 3 separate programming wheels.

By spacing out his instruments across multiple drums driven by a central crank, he has net a lower complexity than the original condensed machine. Once he has proof of concept and a functional "tight" performing machine, he can then work toward making the more condensed machine.

With an axle that's super long, like the one you are using for the gears, I fear that it is going to twist a little bit under use. The timing within one programming wheel won't be affected, but the timing between the different wheels will be offset. If you can guess the load that the axle is going to see, I bet one of the many engineers can easily calculate how many degrees it will twist over its length and how much adjustment should be planned in, if needed ;)

The fear with how big you're making all these programming wheels is that even if you make them out of plastic, the entire machine will end up with a lot of inertia, and you will need a lot of force to stop and start the machine. The "more speed = higher resolution" concept applies to sheet music as well. If I want to write a passage of very rapid syncopated notes in an otherwise slow piece, I might run out of small enough subdivisions (64th notes are usually the smallest). But if I increase the tempo during the fast section, I can start with larger subdivisions (e.g. 8th notes) and still have enough smaller ones to notate every little rhythmic accent. TL;DR: the faster the tempo, the more precise note-length values can be.

Is playing tighter than most human musicians one of those "dumb" design requirements? I think being able to play music is a better design requirement. It is still music if it plays about as tight as human musicians.

One thing I really like about this new machine is that you aren't sticking to the small form factor of the original marble machine. I feel like this was really holding it back as it forced everything to fit within a small space and thus made it much harder to design something that just works properly. Now you have the space to basically do whatever you want, and there wont be the issues of having to cram things together.

Idea for a video down the line. Program "Never gonna give you up" into the MM3 then use the muting levers to real time mix your own song. At the end of the video you flip on all the relevant channels and walk away as everyone watching realizes you've Rick Rolled them. A lot of work but it would be totally worth it.

I love the new idea of an entire wheel for just drums, theoreticly you could have everything already programmed on the drums, like quarter notes, triples etc, and if you wanna go really hardcore (might be issues with timing though) is different tempos set with gear ratios, also activated by levers etc. You could probably play an entire set with just one programming wheel for the drums. 🙌

I really hope the attention the channel is getting shows Wintergatan how badly we just want some simple songs being played by any marble machine. You must realise that even though YOUR expectations are to build a perfect machine because a machine can be finetuned... I feel like I speak for many people when I say that hearing the marble machine X play for full 2 minutes. I don't understand how you could play a song on the wood machine with so many marbles falling out and now you're almost afraid to let every 50 thousandth marble drop.

One thing about feedback in an engineering process: the earlier the better! You can definitely receive too MUCH feedback, but it's honestly never too early to get another (often more senior/experienced) engineer's eyes on the design. Those extra eyes will almost always see something that you didn't, and when designing something with complex systems that must interconnect frequently, consistently, and tightly, making a change to a single small component can trigger changes to many other components. tl;dr - don't wait until the design is totally complete to solicit feedback! If you have some trusted engineers on your Discord, please solicit and process their feedback ASAP on what you've done so far and on each major piece moving forward. You don't have to open it up to the entire community, but a small team (or even just one person) is better than waiting until right before prototyping.

I would suggest making the hexagonal nut flush with the 3D printed part by making a hexagonal inlay that's slightly oversized. This way the part will loosely clamp the nut and you can tighten the bolt with an Allen key with a single hand.
