    Hyundai and Kia vehicles are very finicky about oil filters. I tried using aftermarket filters and the engine was knocking. Went back to OEM and problem solved

    Oem Hyundai filters are made by mann-hummel which is made by Purolator...ive been running Purolator on my wifes sonata for years with zero issues, and made right here in the USA

    I had the same issue with my vehicle. Only use OEM fiters for Hyundais. Nothing else.

    Protip: Wix 51334XP is also produced by Mann-Hummel (maker of the OEM filter) and is a great replacement also.

    TIP. When you feel the drain plug coming out has some resistance especially on a steel oil pan, install a new drain plug usually this solves the problem the threads are stretched out, and a new plug prevents the pan from getting worse. Lube shops are a joke they do more harm than good. Operated and owned by people who have no clue and they do not train properly if at all, not to mention they upsell and rip you off, products they use are low quality and cheap.

    My neighbor’s beautiful limited trim Elantra idle like a diesel. I can hear it has a rod knock/piston slap several feets away. Sigh… If Hyundai did one thing right it’s definitely be the spin on filter.

    Back in the day sometimes we were able to catch it and put on a Hyundai filter before it got bad. But the majority of them that do come in was on a tow truck.

    @@theoffroadingmechanic Yeah. NOt sure how long this engine would last though! Another question. If my shift stick feels little bit rusty and not quite smooth when shifting from Drive to Park, what can I do to improve it? Should I find the metal switch on transmission case and apply some lube on it or check the stick mechanism itself?

    It's a 2011, 2012 Sonata Hybrid? See which part is binding you can remove the shift knob by pulling up hard. And the side pieces are just clipped in. I can't remember might be 2 Philip screws and the entire cup holder area can just pull up and are just clipped in. We did tones of recalls can't remember what it was. But you can see if there is a bunch of junk on the shifter assembly or disconnect the shifter cable to see if the stiffness is in the shifter or if it's in the shifter cable. You can unbolt the lever on the transmission range switch but you will need an alignment tool when re installing

    I'd consider taking a sample of that oil and having it sent off to be diagnosed. Hard to tell on tv. I'd have cut the oil filter in half and looked at the filter material in particular for glitter or metal parts. It drives me nuts that these newer cars say 10k oil changes unless it's a Benz amg or audi s or rs engine that is built really well I'd do 5 to 7500 mile oil changes max. Also the quality of so many of these crappy oil filters is insanity if it's not a wix filter it's usually crap. Not because of brand name loyalty but having tested over 30 different oil filters wix hands down blows away the competition. Even moreso then OEM. I have a 2012 Sonata that has some mods done and the 2.0 engine in it still scares me. They just have a piss poor design. Timing chains. It's so amazing that we still are having this issue with timing chains. My dad bought a 1997 cadillac catera that had the 3.0 v6 and the car was beautiful. First car I'd ever seen with 4 heated seats in it and it honestly looked more like a BMW at the time then a Cadillac. But this car once it hit 30k had recall after recall. I remember at times it would not start and seem like it was completely dead to waiting five minutes and itd fire up. But it ended up having the dreaded timing chain recall and I'll never forget going to the cadillac dealer and the lady that had gotten there at the same time had the same car and as they were pulling it in the bay the engine literally imploded. She wound up getting a new engine. If at the time we had been so lucky. They did the timing chain and by the time we drove 30 miles home the engine was ticking and smoking. And oil was coming out around the plugs which sit down inside the engine a good few inches and the entire hole of several plugs had filled with oil because they never tightened the plugs and because the rings were shot to. After 3 months of back and forth we ended up getting full value from cadillac for what the car was worth new and dad traded it for a deville and we had it for a long time.... Nowadays I have a 2001 cadillac catera sport that I got for pennies and its about to hit 200k with no issues but a cracked radiator needing replaced at around 170k. My wife had a 2005 cadillac sts v6 that had timing chain issues as well and tons of electrical problems luckily we were able to trade up to the sts v with the v8 and it's a much better engine. I dont know why GM cant figure out what engines were the best like the late 80s and all the 90s supercharged 3.8 and the ls engines. Needless to say I have a 2022 cadillac ct5 blackwing and its absolutely the nicest american car I've ever owned. But still lacks compared to the 2015 Audi RS5 that I've had for 5 years now and my moms Benz cls63 which is a fricken beast with the bi turbo hand built v8. I guess it just proves that sometimes newer isnt better and sometimes an idea should remain an idea. Honestly these days I think from this point on when I do any further buying selling and trading cars if it's not German or italian you can keep it. Yeah it's harder to work on and more expensive. But when they get it right they really get it right. Theres a reason american car companies have bankrupted before and a reason why the only reason they really exist is because of the trucks they make.

    With new cars with using 0w-16 and running as low as 15psi at idle don't think that allows enough pressure to overcome the spring for the bypass valve and has no choice but to go through the filter and starve the engine from oil is my theory. Probably why manufactures are going to cartridge style filters for that reason since the cap has the built in bypass valves.

    Would like to have seen what the inside of the filter looked like, cut open. Not saying there wasn't an issue with the filter, but imo, looking at the inside might have told a more complete story. For whatever reason(s) Hyundais do seem to be more sensitive to using aftermarket oil filters. I haven't found that to be true with Hondas and I've used many aftermarket filters. Anyway, thanks for the video.

    Yea never had issue with aftermarket filters on Honda's. We know it's a protune filter maybe if I can find where to buy that specific filter I can cut it open. Or might still be in the filter recycling bin

    @@theoffroadingmechanic Appreciate the reply. Likely Protune used at quick lube type places. I thought might have been interesting to see if filter had an actual visible defect. Or perhaps just how loaded/clogged it might have been. I did google Protune filters and seem to be part of company known as Autopart International (API).

    I looked for the filter and it was gone. I asked the apprentice where it was and the customer actually asked for that filter to take back.

    @@theoffroadingmechanic Now that is interesting. Wonder if customer planning on filing some type of claim for the filter, or some compensation from the place that changed it last. Once cut open couldn't file a claim because not in original form. Anyway, appreciate you following up on my comment. I gotta say, all these issues with aftermarket filters on Hyun/Kia, seems they all can't be just the filter's fault. Just my opinion.

    Probably took it back to the place with our invoice to get their money back I would think. Or with shops nowadays they would probably blame it on bad Hyundai engines. When I was working at Hyundai there would be a used car dealer that would always bring us there cars with bad engines. They would buy them cheap and we would do the recall and replace the engine under the recall and they would sell the car for a profit

    I think because of engines being more efficient and running lower oil pressure the filter needed to change for better oil flow. I'm not sure if they are as good or not and the materials they changed in the filter. But just looking at the filter the holes are bigger and they added more holes to the filter probably means they changed it for the newer engines but can still be used on the older engines.

    The Fram made A02 is the most common Honda OEM filter sold in the US. Mahle/Tennex does make the Honda -003, made in Japan, but it is an uncommon find. The Filtec A01 afaik, is no more. If you cut open an A02, looks very similar to standard Fram orange can filter.

    OEM Honda filters are JUNK now because they are made by fram. Anything fram filter wise is hot garbage.

    Do you think a magnetic oil drain plug is good idea or snake oil? people should always use OEM oil filter. Low cost for an item that is critical to your engine. My 95 Civic only use OEM parts. $90 for an oil change at honda deal does sting for a 30 years old car.

    It depends if you have a cast iron block might be more beneficial to have a magnet that can catch the more fine material that the filter can't catch. But for most modern engine aluminum and copper aren't magnetic. You may get some stuff from cam shafts, crank shaft and oil pump but once an engine has been broken in you will see little material as long as your doing your regular oil changes.

    All Honda dealers don't use the same oil. For $90 I'd hope to at least be getting a synthetic oils. Thera are a number of after market oil filters that are better than what Honda supplies. I use Wix. If you learn to diy it, and shop carefully, you get the oil changed for about $40 Canadian with a good quality synthetic oil. In the US, I don't know... Maybe $30 USD ish? The parts desk at your Honda dealer will sell you an oil filter and a drain plug washer if you try it want to stick with Honda oil filters. For my two old Hondas I've been using Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage or Penzoil Platinum Ultra and Wix filters for years. I doubt that any dealer is using oil with the quality of Pennzoil Platinum Ultra.

    I was stolen twice and had the ignition messed up and then the engine stopped running. The owner wants to drive it again our shop foreman is getting it back up and going again.

    They pretty much suffer the same end result and end up needing an engine. We were starting to do 3.3 GDI lambda engines.
