@@pettylabelle7944 not exactly, it really means putting it behind because both realize there are more important things, squashed has more a connotation of "putting it aside with force without resolve" that might just be my interpretation, but if we mean that we say "daar praten we niet over" (we won't talk about that) , zand erover , really is dutch in the sense that you can see it in the context of polders; to build a solid foundation to move upwards from, generally theres been a good heart to heart before you decide to put sand over the matter and encase it , not gone, not flattened but as a monument to the experience.

Ik gebruik ‘op die fiets’ zo vaak en ook in ‘t Engels en Duits, dat mn vrienden in t buitenland gewoon weten wat t betekent. Het grappige is dat de Belgen ‘m blijkbaar niet kennen dus nadat ik t al tig keer gezegd had zei een Vlaamse viend heel trots ‘ooooh zo gaat die fiets!’.

Ik heb als Vlaming een Nederlandse vriend, en toen ik hem de eerste keer die uitdrukking hoorde gebruiken, wist ik eerst niet zeker of dit nu een echte uitdrukking was, of het gewoon aan hem lag :p Ondertussen heb ik het idd al vaker gehoord, maar die allereerste keer...ik kon me gewoon niet concentreren op wat er verder gezegd werd omdat die uitdrukking me gewoon zó vreemd in de oren klonk.

its used in a situation like you get a free second hand car that works fine but has a small dent in it , you shoudnt complain about it having a dent and should being exited about a free car.

I studied on Crete and remember that my foreign friends all loved the word "uitbuiken" after we'd enjoyed a good Cretan meal with local meze. Some of them *still* use it, almost 17yrs after the fact 😄.

Hallo meneer de Pau. Ik hou can uw filmpjes. Zij zijn goed om Nederlandse cultuur te ontdekken. Ik weet sommige zinnen als ik heb andere video's van u gekeken. In Spanje, men zegt "A caballo regalado, no le mires los dientes". Dat betekent hetzelfde als het Nederlandse gezegde van het paard. "Je dik achterna lopen" kan betekent "pensar con la entrepierna (polla)". Ik wist er niets van "een engeltje pist on je tong". Dat is grappig voor mij. Ik hou echt van de volgende uitdrukking: "met de deur in het huis te vallen". Een vergelijkbare vertaling in het Spaans is "ir al grano". 😃 Ik hoop dat jullie deze uitdrukkingen interessant vinden, omdat ze niet hetzelfde zijn in het Nederlands, maar ze hebben dezelfde betekenis. "Met de deur in huis vallen." heb je ook precies het zelfde in het Duits "Mit der Tür ins Haus fallen."

In Italy we have a couple of sayings similar to the Dutch ones. "Guests are like fish: after 3 days they smell" "You don't look in the mouth of a gifted/given horse"

Topserie, briljant! en zeer vermakelijk om ons te bekijken door de bril van andere culturen. Topverhaal!

In Poland we have a same saying the one about a gifted horse . Liked a video. Keep up.

By the way, "Zand erover" isn't explained very well. It's more like an alternative to "water under the bridge". It's often used to forgive a minor transgression. I'd describe it as "You know what you did wrong and I know your intentions weren't malicious so let's not waste time and energy making a big deal out of it.".

In what way are our expressions more weird than English ones? In English you have: "It's raining cats and dogs", "Beat around the bush", "A piece of cake", "Over the moon, "It's gonna blow your socks off"... shall I continue?

Wait till they visit the Flemish part of Belgium…then it will get confusing 😉 For example, in the Netherlands they say ‘Er was geen hond’ (there was no dog, meaning there was almost nobody there). In Belgium they say ‘Er was geen kat’ (there was no cat). Very fascinating…

Funny that one we use in the US. We say “Don’t kick a gift horse in the mouth”. My favorite American expression is “They don’t have a pot to piss in”. Relating to a person always bragging about their possessions or the like. My Mom used it often.

In that case you probably have/had Dutch ancestors. You should try to find the Dutch expressions in this painting. There are 125 of them. Schitterende video's! Zo ontwapenend als buitenlanders onze taal (leren) spreken. Het feit dat ze de moeite geeft blijk van zo veel respect en maakt hen heel aimabel. In België is er een taallerares die nieuwkomers bekende uitspraken uit populaire Vlaamse televisie-programma's aanleert, zodat ze die kunnen gebruiken in het dagelijkse leven. Dat heeft een ongelofelijk positief effect op de autochtonen en het integratie-effect.

I like the saying "Choosing eggs for your money" (Eieren voor je geld kiezen) it means that when you're in a situation where no choice is a good choice, you pick the choice that sucks the least.

Leuke filmpjes. Ik gebruik zelf ook wel eens gezegdes uit het engels die voor bepaalde situaties heel doeltreffend zijn en waarvoor het Nederlands dan weer geen gezegde heeft.

Ook hilarisch om te zien hoe overtuigd Van Gaal die oer-Nederlandse uitdrukkingen vrij vertaald gebruikt in andere talen 😂

It's interesting some dutches proverbs we can find in others western cultures, the proverb about horse gaved like a gift in macausian culture we say: "About horse gaved like a gift you don't look the tooths". Very interesting like many proverbs can being global in a course of time.🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂

The full version is: "Daarom is geen reden. Als je van de trap af valt, ben je snel beneden." It's used as a clever comeback when someone merely gives "just because" as an explaination.

There are many expressions in Dutch which are uncommon in Dutch speaking Belgium (Flanders) or which make only slowly their way. 1) "tig", stemming from "twintig, dertig, veertig ..." meaning "a lot". We now know what it means but we don't use it. 2) "een eitje", meaning "it's easy", same 3) "dat is een dingetje", meaning "it's a thing" which means "yeah, we should probably worry about it" or "it's meaningful", ... Same 4) "kan ik misschien een haakje in die toko werpen" meaning "I can make a connection", "toko" meaning "shop"; Belgium has no connection to the former Dutch colonies, so any borrowed terms like "toko" are also unknown 5) and then you can cause a lot of confusion with terms having a slightly different meaning like "lopen", "stappen", "uitgaan": our "stappen" is "lopen" in Dutch; the Dutch "stappen" is our "uitgaan".

My favourite: "Wie worsten eet of weduwen trouwt, weet nooit wat daar is in gedouwd" to all none Dutch: figure this out.

Zand erover doesnt quite mean "lets not talk about it" it means the same as "water under the bridge" or "bygones be bygones" so "if you are willing to let it be, i am willing to let it be"

"Een gegeven paard niet in de bek kijken" Komt uit de paarden handel. Aan het gebit van een paard kun je de gezondheid van het dier bepalen. Het slaat ook op dat als je iets voor niets krijgt, je niet al t kritisch mag zijn.

Op 'n ouwe fiets moet je het leren. Learn to ride on an old bike. Young man with a much older girlfriend.

Lot of these are nearly the same in my language as well.. xD

Interesting about the phrase "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" (this is an expression we see in English too) my father says it's because when you look at a horse's teeth you can tell the age. So looking at a horse that is gifted to you in the mouth is rude, as you are seeing if they are giving you an old horse (which would not be appreciated). You should appreciate the gift and not question it.

Indeed, coming from the country side, especially for the older farmers it is the first ting they do; look into a horse mouth to estimate the age’ .

On a cattle market, horses were checked on their health and age by looking inside their mouth. Hence the expression: je mag een gegeven paard niet in de bek kijken. If something is given to you as a gift and you're not happy with it, you better still be thankful for you gift regardless (out of politeness).

Do any of these people even realize that there is an entire country outside the city limits of Amsterdam....

Yeeting it through Google translate, you'll get 'watching(/looking) the cat out of the tree', but it means that you're observing something before joining in, though the joining in doesn't always happen. A good example would be your first day in a new class that's already familiar with eachother, so you're just watching everybody interact before you really start to get to know them. One last thing, I'm sure most if not all English-speakers know the expression 'the cat's out of the bag.' There's a Dutch variant as well, but that one is 'nu komt de aap uit de mouw,' translating to 'the monkey's out of the sleeve.' Don't get them mixed up, you'll confuse speakers of both languages ˆˆ'

You would be surprised how Dutch the USA actually is. The pilgrim fathers took a lot of Dutch heritage to the new found land after all, anything from the declaration of Independence that is not too different from the Dutch one, up till your Constitution and all the ideas of free speech, free trade (Wall Street stock exchange) and so on that came with it. Even the American icon... The Donut... is but a Dutch invention. So it isn't surprising that some of our expressions got integrated into culture over there. Also did you know that the Netherlands is the ONLY country to have EVER conquered the United Kingdom by slaying it's King at the Battle of the Boyne? They just aren't proud of it and so you never hear them about it, but the United Kingdom was under Dutch rule as well.

@@LogiForce86 I am Dutch, but it is wrong to say that there was a battle of the Boyne and that the Dutch "conquered" the UK or was under Dutch rule. The Dutch king was invited, and he could only rule on the terms of the British Parliament. The Sovereign was his wife. It was strictly speaking not even William's "rule". The battle of the Boyne was so small, it was not even a battle. If you want to be that chauvinistic, you could better mention the Dutch Raid on the Medway. But even that was not a battle. Of the bigger (sea) battles in the 17th century, the UK won nearly every time, or it was sometimes inconclusive.

@@ronaldderooij1774 Do not forget that you are talking about a time long before emancipation. Of course women weren't powerless creatures and had their own circles and ways in which they spread their influence, but the husband was still the one to listen to. Even in this day and age of emancipation a couple influences each other, so even Maxima influencing politics while Willem can not involve himself with politics is something I personally frown upon. I digress. What I am saying is that official titles often only tell half of the story as you can not under any circumstances ignore the personal relationships. The Battle of Medway was also important and more of an infiltrate and destroy mission than anything else, but the Battle at the Boyne was a decisive turning point for England as well as Ireland. It is after all still celebrated by the Irish. I am not saying you are wrong history wise though. It can get quite complex after all, and even I might be completely wrong. I am not a historian, not in the slightest. Personally I recently found the era quite interesting, and I do also believe that the Golden Age is something we should look at again. Not because of the slave trade but more so because of the Enlightenment. I think we are forgetting a lot of important lessons learned back then.

@@forkless I made an ironic remark since van Gaal's bad English was infamous over here.

I have enough trouble with word order in Dutch. I find some of these Dutch sayings a little strange and others a little rude.

Spanish sayings have harder content somehow... So I find Dutch ones very nice.

Try this one: Helaas pindakaas (To bad, Peanut butter) It might lose something in translation =D

"sadly, that's the way it is, nothing can be done" these two words helaas pindakaas only go together because they rhyme, there is no meaning to connect peanut butter with misfortune. "helaas pindakaas" is said when there is misfortune but it is not very serious, or if you're not very empathetic with the other person's misfortune. a rude shop owner might say it if you order just as they're closing up and they're refusing you service.

Na regen komt zonneschijn, .. yeah, that's really funny, .. almost as funny as euskadi ta askatasuna, ..

Waarom zijn het "absurde" uitdrukkingen? Dat klinkt echt negatief
