That's interesting. It's also centuries old here in The Netherlands. Perhaps we had some interaction one way or the other. We had a strong connection through trade by the Hanseatic League, shipping grain from Poland to Dutch ports (something which is still ongoing today). Gdansk had a considerable sized Dutch community with influence afaik (traders). One of my ancestors came from there. Trade was done all the way along the coast up to the Baltic Sea.

Scientists have discovered that the reason for this is, by the fashion the Dutch eat it, the freshly-chopped onions will be near the eyes. Having your head tilted back, the tears draw backward and end up in the oral cavity, both watering the mouth and already including some salt. The long-term effect is to make the Dutch anticipate the salty herring; in the short term it desensitizes the mouth so that the overly-salted herring tastes only a little more salty.

so the reason Dutch Herring exists is because back in the day we didn't have good preservatives to keep fish fresh and good for long. in order to not make the fish go to waste they where put into barrels with chopped unions. the chopped unions partially preserve the fish because of its sourness and the unions its taste and smell are/where stronger then the rotting fish allowing for easy consumption even after months of being in a barrel. today the oil/union preserved fish is a national dish and treat of times past. for anyone wondering how it tastes its more oily and union then raw fish, its sour and thanks to the unions a bit sweet its a surprisingly refreshing dish that indeed goes well after or whilst a day of drinking the unions and sourness and oils help stave away an upset stomach and can help you not get nauseas.

Normally this gets served with union and pieces of pickle. So you already diddent gave them a real feel of it. Then to say dutch people eat it a certain way is wrong. Since there is a Amsterdam way and a Rotterdam way. Most people i know eat it it cutt with knife and fork or in een "broodje" So the video is bullshit on its own already..

Only people in and around Amsterdam eat herring with onion and pickles. The rest of the Netherlands eat it with just onion. Although when you have really good quality herring you don't even add the onion. (In the past onion was added by salespeople to hide that the herring was getting old and starting to smell bad. And it became part of the tradition even though we can now cool the herring to prevent it getting bad) And again it is typically in Amsterdam where they cut the herring and you eat the pieces using the little flag. Probably because if you hold it by the tail the pickles would fall off. (the little pieces of onion will stick) The only part of the video that is bullshit, is that the Dutch would eat it in one gulp.
