Awesome videos. I have a Fern and an Amia and this video is 100% accurate from my experience. I also have a newer Embody (office version with the added foam) and apart from the noise I had with it (I had to lubricate the heck out of it to get it mostly quiet, especially down the rails where the seat extensions slide in), I think it fits me a little better at 5'11" and 200 pounds. I do like the Fern's seat cushion a lot, they just didn't make that chair for taller people. Instead of two fingers behind the knee, I end up with more than a fist, when I keep it adjusted back for my sit bones to be in a good spot. If a person doesn't mind that it is an awesome chair, but yeah the back adjustment is limited and the Steelcase and Embody arm pads are softer and feel better. The Steelcase seat pads are very thin but the pan flexibility really does help, so keep that in mind with expectations if you're considering one. Thumbs up!!

Thanks for the review. I watched this a couple weeks ago before while researching a new chair. Went to an office supply store that had both the Embody and Leap in stock. Got the Leap for about 1/3rd the original price, and is the most comfortable office chair I've had. Only complaint is that the adjustment knobs hit me in the back of the calf if I put my feet up on the base, but considering I'm not crying in pain after sitting for more than hour, I'd call that more than a fair trade.

I've been using a refurbished (reconditioned?) Steelcase Leap v2 that I actually purchased from you guys a few years ago, and it's been okay. At 6'3" and heavier than I'd prefer, I've never found it particularly comfortable, but it at least is robust enough to get the job done. I honestly hate not having a head rest though and even considered going back to one of those terrible "racing" gaming chairs for awhile. After spending years looking for a better solution with a head rest that doesn't cost more than $600 USD designed to actually accommodate even tall people, I basically gave up on "ergonomic" office chairs. Recently, I found a super comfortable old, high back reclining chair at the local Good Will for like $85 that I plan to fix, reupholster and put to use. We'll see how that goes.

I now have both chairs and have finally stopped trying and failing (over too many years) for a great chair. They're both excellent chairs and I'm thrilled to have found them (thanks to you guys). For my personal tastes, the Fern is one of the world's greatest inventions (right up there with Kindles). I recently added an Atlas Headrest (spectacular!) and am now waiting on one of the new OL (intentionally abbreviated) headrests for the Leap V2 (expected at the end of May). I have home offices, and for the first time in Ever am now sitting comfortably in both. Thanks, BTOD!!

Do you often switch from Fern to Leap V2 throughout a day or a week? How is the experience switching back and forth (mentally and related to comfort)? Thanks. I am a current Fern owner and was thinking of also buying a Lamia chair

@@thewhitewolffl I actually start each day on the Leap (upstairs), then move downstairs to my regular office mid morning (daily). Fern all day, then another hour in the Leap before bed. I actually like switching it up - it makes me appreciate both chairs (they each have a unique feel). I ALMOST got a 2nd Fern, but a BTOD refurb'd Leap was 1/3 of the price, so I went that way instead. For me, nothing will likely ever touch the Fern (for favorites), but I AM enjoying the Leap a lot (once I got the lumbar exactly how I wanted it).

I recently tried all of the top chairs from Steelcase, Herman Miller, and Haworth, and the only 2 I’m even considering now buying are the Leap and the Fern (Fern with no lumbar). Those 2 are in their own tier compared to all of the other options in my opinion. I’m probably leaning Leap because it gave me the biggest whoa comfort moment when I sat in it. The Fern is good too, just that its pros are as an overall package, and on looks, design, etc.

Owned all three in the last year, still own an Embody and Leap and I think most people would be happy with the Leap overall. Did not like the Fern. I know these chair companies watch these videos. Steelcase, make a Leap with a good headrest and put the Gesture arms on it and you will own the market. No idea how some so simple can’t be figured out by a company that size 🤦‍♂️

S Tier or A Tier chairs are so comfortable for me I don't like couches or lounge chairs anymore. Over many years, I have used Raynor Ergomhuman chair, BodyBilt Executive chair, BodyBilt Aircelli and more recently Haworth Fern (2 months) . It is possible that the Fern might be the best for me so far.

I don't get the praise for Fern, mine ended up returned to the store. I've had two Fern chairs and quality wise it's mediocre at best, armrests are just moving all around and it's really hard to place them properly in desired way and also very easy to accidentally move them. The seat is absolutely horrible in my opinion (for a heavier guy), it's so firm and uncomfortable my ass was screaming after a few hours. Backrest is cool, lumbar is okay, but that's not enough for me. Since Embody was also brought up, I tested it and hated it too. It must be the NOISEST chair I've ever used in my life, it's creaking like crazy (mostly the seat if you extend it), brand-new! I've had several Embodies in different configurations and returned them. Also Embody is really warm, even with balance fabric I was sweating. Ended up buying a brand-new fully loaded mineral Aeron and couldn't be happier. Quiet, comfortable, breathable, great quality, looks awesome too. Personally I absolutely love mesh chairs. Of course, everyone is different, just felt like sharing my experiences with these chairs.

It sounds like you didn't use the fern long enough to break in the seat. It's well known that dense foams like what the fern has take time to break in like he says in the video I've had the gaming embody for a year now and mine is not noisy at all. I'll admit that it's not going to compete with a mesh chair on cooling factor but it hasn't been a problem for me. I would like it better if if had just a bit more padding.

I tried to get used to the fern but I could not stand the recline movement, it was distracting, also the recline seemed to push my legs in to the seat (or the seat was too firm) making the back of my legs feel dead, awful. I prefer the back to be in stable fixed position as in my old chair. these fancy chairs are over hyped

I disagree with the headrest part. I had the gesture with a headrest and sent it back for a leapv2 with a headrest and it was the better decision, easily. A worse chair for a better headrest wasn't the answer for me and leaning forward in the gesture will throw the desk forward if the armrests are already touching. Great chair otherwise tbh The headrest is still very lacking with the leap but it's better than not having it the last 5-6 years that Ive had the chair.

All black fern doesn't look anymore impressive than the leap imo. Fern does have some nice colors like the orange though that make it stand out but usually charges a few hundred extra for it. Idk how Fern arms can be s tier though. Sitting on a brand new fern rn and they are the flimsiest, most rattly, cheap plasticy feeling of all five chairs I tested. Fern recline is great but overall the chair feels cheap and they delivered a broken chair that can't raise/lower height, that came with scuffs and scratches but no damage to the box... what crandall would sell as a "B" chair (cosmetically speaking). Leap/Amia have their own issues but build quality feels far better overall... like everyone says "built like a tank".

I've owned aeron, mirra 2, Fern, Amia, Haworth Zody Classic. All of them for at least month each and I'm still coming back to my old zody chair. It's not perfect but it's the best I could find. I find it too angled backward (hard to get a good posture). The back knit I sink into too deep and find the seat too hard but it's the chair that gives me the less pain from long session of sitting. I'm still trying to find a better chair. I'm having hip problems from too much sitting in the past and ordered a Hag capisco so I can have a more active sitting. I hope I will like it!
