These Bats Mysteriously Survived a Killer Fungus | National Geographic

Ойын-сауық

White-nose syndrome is lethal to hibernating bats in North America. As of 2015, the fungus has spread to 26 states throughout the Northeast, South, and Midwest, as well as five Canadian provinces. However, researchers have observed behavioral changes that appear to be tied to better survival rates for the bats. There's hope that more bats will survive if they can adapt to the fungus.

I had no idea this was going on! I've been away from it for quite a while, but in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, I was doing a *lot* of caving in Va, WVa, and NC, and the brown bat was a constant part of cave life, very highly respected. They're cute little buggers, eat bugs by the billions, and make some of the best fertilizer in the world. They're a valued part of our ecosystem, and I'd hate to think of them going extinct.

If bats adapt to the fungus then they will survive, life finds a way to move foward.

OriginalCrazyBonez5 From what I've seen, mostly for pollination and insect control. The ones that eat bugs actually eat a huge amount of insects per their body weight.

One rather big deal is farmers will go belly up or spend a fortune on pesticides to kill the millions of insects that wild bats eat every night. We depend on bats for so many indirect benefits like this.
