Researchers think the fungus, found in tropical forests, infects a foraging ant through spores that attach and penetrate the exoskeleton and slowly takes over its behavior. If you'd like to learn more, read on here: on.natgeo.com/2IFsAEU

It does not take over the mind, it instead takes over the nervous system by bypassing the brain. So that Ant is fully aware of what's happening but instead has no control over their actions which is what makes this type of Fungus different from others. Scary, right?

This is the fungus that the one in The Last of Us is directly based on. Not only did the developers directly state it, but in game there is a military journal you can find, explaining that the fungus is a mutated strain evolved to infect humans, and explicitly labels it a variation of Cordyceps.

@@HelDracul I have haha, LoU is more zombie like, that's scary too lol. A lot of the creatures in that game I can see being good examples of what it would look like being a victim.. But what is more subtle, realistic, mysterious, and horrifying..( _Gore description warning_ ) Imagine this being an outbreak and you go back to an infected town and there is just people in grocery stores pinned to the walls and shelves.. a creepy long strand of demonic looking thick string going through them and blooming them into a horrifying sprawled mess and spreading to the next victim down the isle. You look up and see a person cocooned with spores springing from them.. one on the ground with their ribs wide open and elongated bulb like spores jutting out from the middle. A fungus plague like that would be so creepy. Doesn't cause zombie like symptoms or anything that's too cliche. Just slowly kills the host and turns them into "art" of it's own and feeds off the victim slowly. So creepy. :C

Matt Fuentes Just to ruin the zombie deer thin CWD is not even close to even being a zombie virus as a real zombie must be a truly dead creature to be reanimated again later on which CWD cant do.

I just watched The Apothecary Diaries and this was briefly shown in an episode. I didn't know how disturbing and grotesque this fungus actually is, I feel all tingly and uncomfortable now.

It's crazy how these are actual things that live amongst us
This is extrodinary, imagine if they make a game about this.
A fun fact for all Last of Us fans! This real life fungus is far deadlier than even what we got in fiction, it can wipe out entire ant colonies and the only reason it doesn't is because another unknown hyperparasitic fungus castrates it and makes the range of the spread far smaller! Another example of the saying that reality is stranger than fiction! ;)

Ah makes sense tho it sounds like the other unknown hyperparasitic is obviously the problem here feel free to correct me if am wrong :)
