Things can become complicated quickly, but through necessity it’s worth knowing that where I am in Australia, the sun is in the north. When I’ve been in the northern hemisphere the sun is in the south. It plays havoc with my subliminal internal navigational system. The second major thing that needs to be factored is that different geographical areas will have a different weighting on the items you carry. If you are provisioned for snow environments, you will be shedding gear if you find yourself in an arid area. Just research and plan ahead. Be informed but be flexible.

Never been so far away.. would be a great experience to hike in Australia but like you, I would probably be all messed up for navigating 😄 research and making plans are a must, totally agree 👍🏻

Nice video on the 10 essentials. I wish more KZread would emphasize this. In particular, I wish they would cover this when doing gear list videos. Explain how/why each item fits into one of the 10 essentials. ~S

Great video! I went on a 1 hour hike a few years ago very close to town. Okay I could still see the roads. I ended up staying where I was due to an attack by wildlife.....a bird.... a Northern Goshawk. I was close to her nest apparently. I used many of these items during the next 7 hours that I was trapped. I uploaded a video about it. So you never know when you may need them. I always have these essential items and used most of them during this incident......Take care, Bluefin.

many of the places a person would get lost your phone is not going to work. or carry a lot of extra stuff for charging which will depend on sun? I have never needed a repair kit that wouldn't wait till home.

And when you're in an area with no signal? And when you get wet and the watch fails? Maps and compass.

No need for a signal, both are GPS and downloaded maps so not a problem. The watch is waterproof, not for diving… but will not have a problem if getting wet or if it rains… most of these type of watches are. Maps and compass as backup is still a good idea.

Completely agree on not bringing extra food. If you aren’t skinny and want to survive, you can go for days while fasting. Hunger is an inconvenience, that’s it. The biggest killer out there is cold so I triple up on it - stove, and in a ziplock a lighter, stormproof matches and fire starters. Magnifying fresnel lens always in my wallet. Condom as well, can be filled with water to make a round shape which acts as a lens. Or an emergency water bladder (food safe but I’d filter it just because of the lubes used).

Cold... depending upon where you are... In Australia, unless you are in the higher mountains or the depths of winter heat and lack of water will get you every time. So many of the hiking videos on KZread assume that there is water over every hill and that the temperature is mild to cold... You need to understand and plan for the conditions YOU will encounter. Hot and Dry, you need Water and lots of it.

Yea we all have different conditions to prepare for so plan and adapt is off course key! I have no experience hiking in those conditions but can imagine it’s challenging!!

what you speak of is very well thought out, and I have to concede that preparation depends on the situation. :) @@peterstewart3563 However, you might be curious to learn that hipothermia can an does happen even in summer conditions. For example: People sweat a lot, sun drops and they're all sweaty, stop for camp and body cools down rapidly to dangerous levels. Other possible causes would be exposure to cold water during a long period of time (like being adrift at sea), or falling into mud? idk about that one lol but look it up mate

THE most important First Aid item any hiker should ALWAYS have is an Israeli Bandage, an item capable of stopping arterial bleeding if you fall & break something. Keep it handy, you only have 6 minutes to apply it, after that you're D-E-A-D. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.

Agree, this can also be made from other than specific pre-made ones and if bringing these kind of supplies it’s highly recommended to read about how to use them the best way.

Maybe. If you need one, then you better have one. However, it would provide no benefit when attempting to deal with any of the top ten causes of death when hiking. In the US, you get maybe 150 hiker deaths a year. Falls, heat stroke, heart attacks, dehydration and lighting strikes are at the top of the list. I did notice you said "fall and break something" but I don't think that is the kind of fall that kills hikers. The deadly falls occur when they tumble down 300+ feet of near vertical slope bouncing off trees and rocks. You would need to be a trained medic with a full trauma kit to really have a chance to help them. And it would be unlikely you could get to them fast enough to save them from an arterial bleed. I have a couple Israeli bandages, keep one in my vechical's FAK and always have one in my hunting pack FAK. ~S

hmm... it demands that you know how to use it - and still - its just a very temporary fix - you need evacuation - and i am not really sure i ever heard of anyone using this in normal UL hiking - what kind of injury here would you need to stop arterial bleeds ? open fractures - that is very , very uncommon in normal hiking situations - if you know how to use on and think its a must bring item - sure, bring it - i never do, and have never heard of anyone needing one

I wouldn’t call it click bait… “Click bait… when a title and thumbnail over promises and the content underdelivers” But off course that’s my opinion. I’m just trying to make an interesting thumbnail that catches your attention and make you want to know more. Stay safe//Robert
