#1 being tackling is spot on. My first year at a legit rugby school I couldn’t crack the first XV even though I was very fast, had great feet, and was a sniper off the tee. I was just too much of a liability defensively. My next year I just focused on tackling drills and changed my attitude that I was not just going to become passable at tackling, I was going to love it, even though I was a smaller player. Really brought my love for the game up to another level.

I watched Charlie Gamble from under 11's and under 13's age grade. He was about as big as his teams prop, but also as fast as his wingers were. His dad was very involved with his development, and filmed his games and pretty much gave him 1 on 1 coaching outside of his actual coach. Charlie was built from the ground up into what he is today and I think for most rugby players it's all environmental. The Ioane brothers, the Savea brothers, the Barretts, the Fainga's, the Schoups etc. You still have to have the talent, brawn, fitness and drive for it though

Tackling is definitely the thing I need to work the most on, as you said the turnover is more likely in a tackle that pushes back, and its such a good feeling for the team when a dominant tackle is made

Please, if you're a beginner start with low chop tackling. It's far safer and super effective. The tackling technic shown on this video is the best, but for non-beginers.

The last point is definitely most prominent for the more technical positions like hooker or kicker. Thx for the video. Also a point I would like to add is that rugby is as much a physical as it is a mental game, cuz if you get in the head of you oppsing team you truly screw them over. People can say they dont get bothered but I have personally screwed with an entire teams head cuz they pissed me off and we scored more point in those 15 minutes than the other 45. So either block out their comments or be the one to screw in the mental game.

I have a problem, I perform very well at practice; however, when it's match day, I can't seem to perform at the level that I usually perform at practice. I realized that I normally overthink stuff when it's gameday, I always want to prove a point to the coach and my fellow teammates, with this info, I'll definitely improve.

I used to have the same problem, I think it's just a matter of getting used to the game day environment with the crowds and trying to react to the other team's strategies. Also have confidence in yourself, if you're too self conscious about your performance or technique by the time you react the game would've already moved on to the next phase

Great video brother and many wise words indeed. 👍 You said you could spend more time talking about the psychology of the sport and I think that would make an interesting video. I'd also be interested to hear your thoughts on the RFU's 'Core Values'. (I think they are what sets rugby apart from other sports and will serve players well out in the world as well as on the pitch.)

The JJ tackle technique is so underrated for both new and fairly seasoned players as it's something that doesn't even need to be done at full speed, nor full takedown. Just the rib pop is enough. You can get all the mental benefits by simply repeatedly getting into that strong position, and knowing all your mates are too. Absolutely massive team builder under the right mindset and coaching guidance.

Hey uggy i found you just and found you interesting, does side stepping (fake stepping) something like football (Cristiano Ronaldo not American ) to feint a good technique ? I am a very small 13 yr old kid so i am more of agility not committing to tackles? any good techniques to skill past the opponent, like step stepping bc 1 small push and im done i too only do leg day no arm my body with is….

  • @uggy

Hey mate, really hard to say without seeing you play. To be honest, I reckon stepping is overrated. Learn to run good lines, and step into people’s weak shoulder - this is how you see small halfbacks and wingers blow past front rowers.

@@uggy mean that i basically abandoned the sport for a few good years now because of Covid well now that im in Australia NSW i learned that aus is famous for rugby and that i am relocating there for a few years now i know how to throw a few tackles and stuff around but not perfect And stepping as in feinting direction and running the other way round and then when they see i change lane they will do it to come after me then i will do a very underrated/not recognised at all skill move (roulette) basically means that i turn the opposite direction in a spin very quick and easy motion to cleanly get by any defenders in soccer/football don’t really know abt rugby. And also do you have any social media accounts like discord Facebook or what insta (I don’t have but will be happy to create 1)
