I use aquarium tubing suction cups to anchor my house plants at the top of my aquarium. What’s nice is you can adjust the height of the plant by sliding the suction cup up or down on the aquarium wall.

You should also thoroughly rinse all the soil off the roots and give the leaves a good rinse as well before putting plants in a fish tank. That’s to wash off any fertilizer which may be in the soil and/or insecticides on the plants which may be toxic to your aquarium inhabitants. Some people will actually put newly purchased plants in quarantine for several weeks. “Bargin bin” plants may be on sale because they’re stressed due to some insect infestation. The quarantine is to avoid introducing plant pests (thrips, mites) to an already established healthy, thriving system.

Great video Nick! If you want Vanilla Beans you will have to try and pollinate the flowers your self as in the wild they are pollinated by the Mexican melipona bee, there is a large variety of plants you can use such as sedges, aquatic stem plants and any other aquatic plant that grows emerged, if you have enough lighting you can even use some water loving trees if you have enough light and space, your tanks are coming along nicely and the plants add a great touch to your room and make it look so much more natural with all the roots in the tanks, the fish seem much more happier with that little bit of natural cover as well, nice job! 🙂

This just a thing I did may help some of you out. You may have some plastic hanging pots around. You can use the clip part that connects the arms to the plastic pot. I place the plants in the clip. You use it as an arm that you can cut to length you then can use a lighter to bend the plastic to make a hook that will go over the side of your tank or pond

I have one avocado, already planted in soil, it was growing a root for a month now and stem is growing slowly. I live in Atlantic Canada, so it isn't really ideally warm in the house. Still it is growing under a neon light, keeps it a bit warmer than rest of the house. I have a few seeds that are more recent, with tiny roots started to grow about a week ago, I guess I will wait for them to grow longer roots and will stem them into my 50 gallon community thank. I am planning to drill holes on a drift wood I found on a nearby beach (I boiled the wood branches) and attach the branch floating on top of the water. I will wait for my avocados to have longer roots first. I also recently planted green and purple basil seeds, dwarf tomato seeds, and parsley seeds, I might plant my basil seedlings the same way as well. I'm not sure about parsley or dwarf tomato, though. Thank you so much for asking.

Great job. The scope for using plant growth to reduce nitrates is immense. I had a pond in North England, about 1000litre (250 gallons), it was truly green in early summer…bought some watercress from the supermarket and chucked a handful into the pond…it went bananas and the algae growth disappeared so the nitrate fell to zero. Benefit, it’s easy to pull out if it’s gets too out of hand and in the winter it dies back to root.

I found a sweet potato vine plant in the clearance section of Walmart garden, and decided to see if I could grow it out of a fish-tank. It worked amazingly well and the plant is HUGE now, it had a big beautiful bunch of roots that flow in the water. And it’s making its way across the top of the tank now it’s quadrupled in size since I got about 3-4 months ago. I use it in my African cichlid tank and they leave the roots alone.

I've had to get creative with my plant choices because, as you mentioned, many of the popular house plants are toxic to cats. I've had massive success with sweet potatoes! Just stick them in the tank so the tuber is half-in and half-out of the water and give it a bit. Within 5 days, you'll see roots and vine buds starting to sprout (which will also be your sign if you've got the potatoes in upside-down or not). I'm about 3 months in, and I've got multiple vines now that are longer than a meter. Apparently if I take a cutting from the vine and stick that in water, I'd be able to grow actual sweet potatoes. I know you gave a bunch of vegetables a try awhile ago with mixed success, but I think you'd have a lot of fun with sweet potatoes! Mine have grown a nice green biofilm and my caridina shrimp are always hanging out on the tubers and among the roots grazing on them.

From the internet: “Although the sweet potato itself is not toxic to felines, the vines of the sweet potato plant contain the toxic principle LSD. Consuming a small portion of the sweet potato vine can cause a dermatitis-type reaction, causing the cat's skin, mouth or throat to blister and swell upon contact.” It also says potato can be fatal if ingested lol. Protect those cat babies.

The added benefit of the tropical plants growing out of the tank is that they get to engage in that necessary oxygen & gas exchange in the fresh air. That’s something that submersed plants simply don’t experience, though they obviously have their own benefits underwater, as well. Underwater, I like using Anubias, Bucephalandra, Java ferns and _Bolbitis_ (things that don’t require a substrate and can even grow half submerged). Then at the, for houseplants pothos and any Aroid plant is ideal. Also nearly any type of _Tradescantia_ (wandering Jew) does phenomenally.. I try to stick to epiphytic aquatic plants, before adding anything that needs a rich substrate, like Cryptocoryne, Echinodorus, Eleocharis, Lilaeopsis, Alternanthera, Crinum, etc. All of which I have, too 😊 Plus I usually use dirt as the results simply speak for themselves! But with dirt comes the added ammonia and soil breaking down, requiring the weekly water changes, but the added houseplants just serve to filter out all that excess nutrient load. And when the houseplant roots grow long enough-if I let them-they will reach the substrate and go even crazier. Have to watch out they don’t get too destructive though, and disrupt any underwater plants I have.

I use wooden pegs and lacky bands for my aquarium bound houseplants. They peg onto the glass perfectly and provide a tiny bit of inert media for the plant to root into. Alot of rainforest plants grow inbetween the branches of trees so are used to rooting into wood in the wild Also of u plant your plants inpots of leca then peg them to the rim of your tank they grow really well.

Nick , some of the plants you are growing are 100% epiphytes, this means they grow on other plants likes trees and pick moisture and nutrients from the atmosphere. If you find that a plant is not doing well directly growing in the water, then take it out and pot it up into a pot with a mix of compost and shredded bark. With the high humidity in your fish rooms I think you will find more success with some of the plants that aren’t doing so well😊.

Love the video and I totally agree with you - I subscribed my friend. I used lots of plants in my aquariums but theses days I have a lot of stock ponds which have powerbeads in them to take the water to my bog filters and the bits of root debris can block the pump. However I do put plants in the top of my bog filters.

Fascinating! Since you've had some success with the vanilla bean orchid, have you considered trying any other orchids? They could be an amazing addition of color and beauty to a fish tank setup. I have a few orchids that have done well for me in my bay window but the thought of trying them in a fish tank is a little bit scary for me, I don't want to kill them after all. Please let us know if you can do it!

I really enjoyed this video, I’m inspired to get a fish tank but a little intimidated by the mechanics of it-filters and sponges and tubes oh my! lol but the way I could incorporate my plants is convincing me to try

You don't need to worry about all of that, just watch father fish on KZread and create a natural environment
