theSAABguy Repairs: 2002 SAAB 9-5 Blower Motor or Fan Speed Controller

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I replace a Fan Speed Controller on a 2002 SAAB 9-5. I began the job believing it could just be the blower motor (which is easier), but after plugging in the good blower motor I diagnosed the Fan Speed Controller to be the true culprit. Here is a link of the part which needed to be replaced: www.eeuroparts.com/Main/PartDe.... You can follow the directions as seen in this video for both the blower motor and fan speed controller. However I don't show what I did under the dash which was the trickiest part.
Enjoy your SAAB.

If you're doing this repair, it's important that you have a look at the Saab Information workshop for a step by step. You actually remove and install the silver fin module by accessing it from the drivers footwell by first taking off the accelerator foot pedal. You will also need to get into the passenger footwell to access two of the plugs with the harness he shows. This video should only be viewed as an abbreviated look at this repair. Also a good idea to install new brushes in your blower motor when it's removed.

Looking at this and other videos, i decided to cut the controller off the harness (note: the wires are LIVE with ignition off! D/C the battery), repair it by replacing a power transistor (ebay, IRFP054, $6), and then installing connectors on the wires I cut. The learning curve was the tough part, but most of the work was easy. The toughest part was that i didn't have a damn 6mm socket! The critical parts of the learning curve that cost me the most time was figuring out and sourcing the connectors. The wiring consists of a power/ground pair on 10ga stranded and three control wires on 18ga. 1) Get a 3 pin connector, appropriate for 18ga. Get one that's pre-wired or wire it up on the bench. The wiring harness colors are solid blue (green?), white/orange, white/tan. 2) Get two pairs of 10ga bullet connectors for power/ground. On the controller, use a male on the power (red) and a female on the ground, black. On the harness use the reverse. This cost me hours to decide that the 14ga two pin connector I had would melt and then find the 10ga bullets. 3) Get some heat sink compound. This cost me 3 hours because I had some but had to rip the house apart to find it. I soldered the connections because I trust my soldering more than my crimping. It's not hard, but I've had a few years experience soldering... Use heat shrink tubing. Note that the heat shrink over the female bullet connector will make it very difficult to insert the male. Shrink after assembly or shrink lightly. The controller is easy to open, there are just a couple screws under the foam and the whole thing comes out carefully. The IRFP054 is attached with a screw and soldered to the board. The controller is in the driver's footwell, just above the throttle pedal. Remove the pedal - two 13mm nuts. This is perhaps advanced in skills, but hell of a lot easier than pulling the harness across the firewall

Thanks for the video, helped me save $500 from having my saab shop replace my blower motor. Just a note for others, my blower was 'bad' but I bought a rebuild kit off amazon for $25 rebuilt it, and now it's blowing stronger than ever. Now that I've done this removal / installation if you had the right tools it's a 25 minute job. For the wipers, I recommend a battery terminal puller. Popped them off in seconds.

What was your Saab model/year? I'm currently weighing my options as my blower doesn't turn on now (does make strange noises as if it's trying to turn on). Mine is a 2004 93 linear...hopefully it's the same parts as your $25 quick fix

Your a lifesaver Jay, can't thank you enough! 2002 9-5 Aero that I've driven since new. Fan started to get flaky just before a verified heatwave kicked in, died completely on Day 2 with temps in the 90's and dewpoints in the 70s. Isn't that how it usually goes? Ordered up an OEM fan (because after 30 years of self-service I have little faith in aftermarkets) and using your video I had the fan replaced in 1.5 hours. Thankyouthankyouthankyou! Btw, anyone attempting this, unless your wiper arms have been pulled before, expect they'll be a biotch to pull so remove the nuts on the spindles and spray some PB Blaster around the top and underneath and let them set overnight. Then get yourself a wiper arm tool and, with the nut back on the spindle slightly proud of the top to keep the pushing pin of the tool in place, crank it down. I then used an 8" pry bar to get under it and without too much effort I heard it pop free. That, and squeezing the new fan into place, were the hardest part of the job.

A couple of things I'd add about disassembly. The uppermost plastic cover has 4 clips on the underside that hold it to the glass. Push down towards the engine to disengage them. They are no longer available from SAAB so be careful. The underside bolt to the wiper bracket it slotted (2002 9-5) the the bolt need only be loosened up- save the trouble of fitting an upside screw back in place.

Hi! I finally had some time and managed to complete the job of replacing the controller. I realized that the red part of the connectors just pops out and they come apart easily. Otherwise it a hell of a job, especially tackling the screws which hold the controller body in place high in the drivers footwell and feeding the cable with its connectors and grommets from one footwell over the fan to the other. Thanks again for your video! Vladimir

This video was a big saver! It was more than just helpful, IT WAS AWESOME! I got quoted thousands to replace. My fan was very intermittent, bust mostly off! The only thing I would add would be if you don't have one of those cool snake tips, disconnect the the accelerator pedal, gives some room to use a 1/4" drive ratchet. On the passenger side I removed the glove box go give me more room. Saab Guy you are the best

Thank you so much for this video! My 2002 9-5 Aero blower quit running after checking for which circuit is draining the battery by pulling fuses one at a time. Don't know if that shorted the blower resistor or motor but no error codes on ACC. And much thanks to comments mentioning "red part of connectors just pops out" Will update with repair results.

Thanks. Exactly what I needed to see. I didn't realize you could remove the wiper-assembly bracket directly over the blower. And I think my problem is really the speed controller -- which I didn't even know about. One thing I discovered though, which could make the process a little easier on your back: It turns out the hood comes off very easily! Three nuts on each side, pop off the gas-struts, and you can set the hood aside. (It's easy, but it's really a two-person job.)

My 03 9-5 heat and a/c isn't blowing strong enough at all. I can feel it a little-bit but no power although it can switch from hot to cold still. Do I just replace the fan? Or is it an issue in the resistor?

Thanks for the video it was very helpful. I have a 2002 9-5 linear and on cold mornings or damp mornings when I try starting my car, it'll turn on for 1-2 seconds then shut off.. for those 1-2 seconds that it is on, it has a rough idle. Any idea as to what I can do or what it might be? When its driving or idling, its smooth, its only rough for those few seconds on morning starts. Thanks.

I have a challenge for you. My 2003 saab 9-3Linear has an issue where at night the center console ( radio, heat controls, steering wheel controls) stays dark and in the day time it lights up. If I shine a flashlight at the Dome on top of the Information display on the dash, everything comes on but as soon as the light goes off it all goes dark again... Is this some kind of a sensor issue?

Hey Jay, Really great video, thank you. I have an issue with a droning, groaning sound when my fan + AC is turned on. It only happens when the fan is set to the medium & next to high speed setting. I'm wondering if you have ever heard this sound with your 9-5's? It doesn't really make a difference whether my AC is on or just Econ, I still get the moaning sound. The sound goes away when the fan is set to max, or the first three lower settings? I'm wondering if taking the fan out, cleaning it up and replacing the brushes will correct this issue? Thanks !

check the cabin air filter make sure its not plugged , check the fans blower wheel any trapped debris will throw it out of ballence make drone sound and vibrate "but" it usually gets worse the higher the fan speed,, a bad fan control module might send electrical noise to the fan motor at certain speed settings ,, make sure its fan noise and not a stuck or vibrating flap in the heating/cooling system creating a harmonic air movement noise .
