Martina would've been such a great frontwoman for the band, with her vampiric look, ritualistic dance and overall mistique.

Next Therion song must be To Mega Therion!!!

Absolutely love Therion, they have been around for 30 yrs, you need to check out any song from "Live Gothic"

I have been waiting for them to make another live album like live gothic or celebrators of becoming. It never seems to happen. Wish I could get some good live versions of songs like ljusalfheim, abraxas etc. that weren't on those albums.

I would definitely recommend checking out Therion's 'Son of the Staves of Time' video with Mats Leven on vocals - phenomenal! And if you want to continue a symphonic journey, how about checking out Within Temptation performing 'Mother Earth' at their Black Symphony show? :)

Her name is Martina Astner Hornbacher. Performed only in 2 Therion albums but her voice is unique, she's very underrated. She also sang with bands called Dreams od Sanity and Alas.

Therion - Son Of The Staves Of Time

Therion is one of my favourites and it's such a shame the band seems to get barely any recognition so thank you for this. I'm not really sure if live videos are the way to go for a band like this, they use so many vocalists and heavy choir/orchestra parts that a live performance mostly will come from a tape. If you're going to check out more Therion in the future I'd personally recommend just about anything from the Lemuria / Sirius B double album, Son of the Sun, Kali Yuga to name couple of songs. Though my personal favorite is the Secret of the Runes album, just the opening song "Midgard" to me is the essential Therion in all its operatic majesty.

YAY finally a Therion reaction! One of my all time favs and like some people have said, they get overlooked, even though they helped pioneer symphonic metal. Also like others have mentioned, is a completely different "beast" ;) from other symphonic bands like Nightwish, they don't have a consistent line up and singer and the bulk of their work is performed mostly by choirs of both male and female singers. If you wanna check more I recommend To Mega Therion, one of their most popular, Wine of Aluqah for something more speedy and the heavenly Clavicula Nox

Ginnungagap is mostly male singing and symphonic as much, but maybe darker.

Excellent band Therion. I like that they vary what they do. Try Son of the Staves of Time; one of their best imo ...they have so many great tracks

Yeah! Therion is great!

I was the set builder for Therion for their 2007 20th anniversary tour around Europe. Had a blast living on the tour bus and the guys in the band at the time were the nicest guys and gals you could have met. The lineup for that tour was in my opinion their best with Snowy Shaw, Thomas Vikstrom and Lori Lewis as the main vocalists. Christofer was the first person I ever met with an iPhone, they had just been released and he was flashing it about everywhere lol. I bought one when we returned off the tour. Haha. Definitely better versions of this song about, find the version from the 20th anniversary show and you’ll see my wife belly dancing on stage too.

Baltzeg yes despite a fair few technical issues that day, everything seem to come out ok. They had to drop a number of songs from the set as there were some issues with the laptop that had the backing tracks on. We had issues minutes before the first song where the lights in the mask prop stopped working... I had to get ingenious with duct tape and hot glue. Poor girl in the mask was high as a kite after the show as the glue fumes had gotten to her a bit. And the stocks that the masked girls put snowy in pretty much fell apart as they wheeled it onto the stage so snowy had to be very careful with his movements so it didn’t all just collapse. Fun times, great memories.

Some things to say, this song has a female vocalist but the band has both female and male vocals since they became a Symphonic Metal band, in this version the vocalist is Martina Hornbacher Astner. She was a guest vocalist on the "Vovin" album and on the following tour. If you wanna check some of her work try the albums "Komodia" by Dreams of Sanity and "Absolute Purity" by Alas. For the next song to check I would go with "To Mega Therion" or if you want a more male vocals oriented song te "Son of the Staves of Time" with Mats Leven on vocals.

The first song of Vovin album with the original singer Martina the only one live video with her, great choice for reaction. All the songs of Therion which is my favourite band after NW are fantastic and they have many live DVDs for reactions as well. Great reaction guys!!!! More Therion please!!!

Great Biblical Epic video and reaction. Fun to watch and hear. Love to see you do some more songs of them. Older as well younger ones. This album and previous one (Theli) was the key-albums to a more Symphonic / Orchestra approach of writting songs. Also a huge inspiration for many bands that would follow after this. P.s. Therion is one of my favorite band. Been following them since Theli. Would suggest you (after To Mega Therion or Invocation of Naamah) Kali Yuga Pt. 2. Good mixture of the classical/opera side of Therion with their angry riffs and speed. Matts Leven does a great job on this one also. Have fun on your Therion journey ! Oh ! By the way, Lori Lewis has been my very favorite guest singer in Therion. Well, my favorite female singer of all time. Maybe take a look at the DVD Live Gothic or Live in Miskolc.

Huzzah, finally Therion! Death metal band of Celtic Frost fans turning into a operatic rock ensemble in mid-90s, one of my favorite bands from teenage years all the way to this day. Picking live clips from them is an adventure of its own as they have almost never had a consistent line up let alone vocalists (in some ways they are more of a moniker/project for the guitarist/mastermind Christoffer Johnson to pump out epic opera metal albums). Some of their albums have almost exclusively opera choir handling the vocals, sometimes mixing in harsher or rockier sounds (one song has Hansi from Blind Guardian!), but their more recent albums have had constant soloists. Ever since I heard the idea that this story is about ancient use of some kind of nuclear bomb or even worse mass destruction weapon, I can’t see it any other way. The family being told not to look back would make sense because of the insanely bright flash. And getting turned into salt seems like a lot of heat, as nuclear blasts melt sand into glass.

It always amazes me how some people compare Therion to bands like Nightwish or the like (Epica, that can be a little further debatible). Nightwish is a symphonic POWER metal band, not only that but finish power metal, wich tends to be more barroque and epic than ( to say) german one, per se. Therion was a frikin' death metal band at the beggining! And they never lost that "darkness" or "evil" feeling. While the melody itself has gone more into Symphonic/Orchestral ground, their lyrical themes and even guitar sounding, haven't.. Yes, there woudn't be a Nightwish without Therion, but those are two very, VERY different bands.

Love Therion, have every album except the new Rock Opera CDs. Therion was the band that was a huge influence to Night Wish. As a fan of 12 years I'd say favorite songs are "Arrow From The Sun", "The Falling Stone", "Call of Dagon", "Seven Secrets of the Sphinx" . Also I know you're a Scorpions fan so they do a covers of "Crying Days" and "Fly to the Rainbow", but they do fantastic covers of ABBA's "Summernight City" and Accept's "Seawinds"(which is better than the original), also love their cover of Manowar's "Thor".

When you did the reaction for Sabaton's Amon Amarth cover, you askel for another cool covers. There's one that's a quadruple win: THERION covering MANOWAR's THOR LIVE with SNOWY SHAW on lead vocals. Especially the official version from Live Gothic is very much worth of checking puh. Also, as has been mentioned here too, any clip from that particular DVD is worth checking out. Back in 2007 vocalists on the tour were Snowy Shaw, Mats Leven, Lori Lewis and Katarina Lilja. 3 years later on Sitra Ahra Tour, when I saw them live for the first time, vocalists were almost the same, Thomas Vikström was filling in for Mats. And the rest of the band, besides Johnson, of course, were completely changed from -07. Second time was last March in Helsinki. Very much worth of driving five hours straight to get there.

Glad you checked these guys out. They generally have multiple vocalists in their songs. Typhon would be a good one to check out that merges this style with their death metal roots. From here you should do Ayreon, another big progressive project/collective.

You may do an interesting experiment- to react in one video to two live performances of their most well known song To Mega Therion- let's say definitely live 2001 and the next one- live 2007- IMHO their best lineup (due to member changes in Therion to listen to two different live performances of one song is quite interesting. Their mastermind (the guitar player Christopher Johnson) is a real genius and one of the greatest metal composers (and recently opera composer as well).

Also, can you react to EPICA's Wings of Freedom? It's one of their covers from the Attack on Titans EP. :) Thanks!

Yay Therion. Glad to had seen them live 2 times, one it was a really crappy event with major frauds, but they stand still and play for the fans almost three hours, I love them even more since that they, and in compemsnation lots of fans there were lawyers and helped sue the promoters(or fake people saying were promoters) I think all ended well. The material from Sitra Agra and Fleurs du mal is pretty weak, but their new album already as some nice songs, I enjoy Night Reborn for example. In rememberance from Arab zaraq lucid dreaming is a nice earlier song from them even their aAbba Cover for Summer Night City is really good I second songs like Son of the Staves of time, Des Mitternachts lowe, Perennial Sophia, wisdom and the cage, Wand of Abaris and Three Treasures from Gothic Kaballah as they are my favourite. Is hard to point single songs but Cults of the Shadow, To Mega Therion, Thor Version, typhon, An Arrow from the sun, Son of the sun... so many for different tastes

it´s Christopher´s Johnsson´s band, many hired guns and lots of middle east and persian music influences and atmosphere´s cos the guy studied all that stuff, not that that the girl is on any kind of "stuff" (Martina Hornbacher, who´s well known in this type of music and sang for many bands)

A&P-REACTS - not the daughters, but the wife of pious Lot turned around and became salt pillar. What is most sad is Lot witnessing her fate and still forced to move on. The daughters Lot had to give to the sinful folk to satiate them so they wouldn't try harming his guests - the Angels. Highly recommend the classic and most important one To Mega Therion. Besides that Lemuria, Quetzalcoatl, Abraxas, Asgard, Midgard, Sirius B. Also for a change they covered classical music as Dvorak and Verdi. Really neat! Sodom and Gomorrah does remain my favorite of this band till this day though. That and Midgard (me being a sucker for Norse mythology)

Yeah, the live version in Poland was the best beautifully put together piece. Still symphonic metal is hit or miss thing with me.

Nice riceaction. I love this song. By the way the Chatolic church is as pagan as Sodom and Gomorrah was at that time maybe even more pagan. Lot's wife was transformed into a salt statue by looking back. Many scientists belive that the destroying of Sodom and Gomorrah was done by something similar to a nuclear bomb that we've got in our days. I wish you all the best.

Great and historic band. Honestly, this live performance is not the best, though. I would recommend checking out some of their studio versions for future reactions, or if you do live, doing songs from their 2006 DVD "Celebrators of Becoming." One of my favorite Therion songs of all time is "Via Nocturna" off their 2000 album Degial. It is an epic song with lots of different parts, unlike many Therion songs which tend not to vary too much from the core melody or rhythm throughout the song.

If you aim for quality audio headphones, avoid Beats at all costs.

One of the biggest problems with Therion are about official concerts in the past: If you listen to "Live At Midgard" (2002) you note that album sounds horrible, making an absolute unjustice for a legendary band. And that's the reason why I Love "Live Gothic" (2007/2008), it sounds goods.

That was a surprisingly poor performance of that song, wow. I've seen them do it way better than that. I've always found Therion very interesting but never really managed to get into them. I only really like the songs with Thomas Vikström on vocals, he is amazing.

Mats Leven, who he essentially replaced, was significantly better, IMO. Any Therion live video with him in it is pretty great.
