When you listen to it the next hundred times or so you can start to hear how the lyrics reflect what the different instruments are literally doing at each part of the song. I'll let you discover those layers on your own, because that's part of the joy of listening to their music.

Years ago, my wife and I went through a pretty rough time. Bad enough that most relationships would have ended going through what we went through. It was all caused by a lack of communication. It was also from strengthening our communication that we were able to come through it as a much stronger and closer couple. Communication is key to building and sustaining relationships, and this song is the soundtrack to it. Great reaction! You need to hear "Lateralus" or "the Grudge" next!

Having been a fan since the beginning, it is so refreshing to see new fans and the emotions they are showing. Tool is, as you said, a level above, level 6, no others. They do the music first, then Maynard writes the lyrics. Greatest band ever. Tool Rules! Getting to see them with my son November 4th. His first concert, my bucket list complete. A dream come true. Subbed brother. Danny Carey is top notch, they all are. Invincible is killer and Descending too. Hell, all of their songs are bad ass.

I don’t understand why ppl tell listeners to not bother with the lyrics as if that’s the only right way to listen to Tool (or any band). People gravitate to different things that make up music, and for some people (myself included) the lyrics of a song can play a significant roll in how well I enjoy and connect with a song. Personally, it bothers me when reactors DON’T pay attention to the lyrics. All that to say, if you wanna read the lyrics while you listen, do it, and don’t let anyone tell you you’re listening to Tool “wrong”

  • @sharilynbratton6476

It bothers me too! When all a reactor talks about are the instruments and music and they totally ignore the lyrics it's like they're missing the meat in the sandwich with some bands whose lyrics are as fire and as meaningful as the music! Drives me crazy ha but maybe that's the writer and the Literature major in me!

I've been hooked on Tool reaction videos lately, but you are by far the best KZreadr I've watched. So many people just focus on Maynard, or on Danny's drumming, and seem to miss the whole song, when what really makes Tool is that each song is an entire sonic landscape. That, and everyone focuses on the same one or two songs, and you really dived in. Tool is on tour right now and I hope they come somewhere near you.

More reactions should be like yours! The way you describe the thoughts you’re having and the way you work things out in real time is really cool (and adds something to the videos you watch, which is important). Love to see you enjoying this band as well! As far as the lyrics, I would personally say you are fine to look at them or pick up parts as you listen. Just don’t worry if you miss some and end up just listening to the instruments, because not only does TOOL fill your ears with the instruments and tend to mix the vocals a little lower so they blend into the rest, but the lyrics themselves can be a little complex to decipher. Basically just feel free to listen to whatever catches your interest and don’t worry as much about missing the lyrics (rather than avoiding them altogether)!

1:06 - That's again a rather good way of putting it, and it's all the more effective because of how complex and interwoven the different parts of it are. In mentalism magic (like Derren Brown) there's a type of hypnotic induction called a pattern interrupt. It crashes the mind by giving you something you know and getting you to start reacting to it and then switching it up and pulling you along. The opening of Tool songs also work like an induction to pull you out of your day to day mindset and into the moment, following like rats through the streets of Hamelin.

16:30 - Remember, there is a part between rediscoverint and strenghtening our communitation: "Finding beauty in the dissonance". My interpretation, based on my own experiences and biases is that we need to learn to accept and understand our differences and THEN our communicaion can be strenghtened by that knowledge. But hey, Tool does what Tool does and we all try to make some sense into it. :D

When you get around to 46 and 2, which is an AMAZING song, there's a great cover of the song done by children. Definitely worth it's own separate reaction.

The last three minutes of this video where you explained the message of this song was great. I’ve heard this so many times but never knew what the song was about.

The Daney Carey live drum cam performance will explain the switch ups a bit. How he does it, is a mystery though.

You’re new to TOOL, but you clearly understand what it is that draws people (and has kept people) to TOOL. I’ve loved TOOL since 2001 when I first heard them on the local rock station. It was Ænima, and it spoke to a raw anger that I felt. And then I learned that this was the exception. I love your TOOL content. You get it, bro. Welcome to TOOL Army. We’re a bunch of idiots who used to think we were supergeniuses.

Something to help you understand the lyrics, almost all Tool songs come from a place of personal growth. Recognize flaws in yourself, recognize the flaws of the world around you and do the work to grow and become a better person. By doing so, the world around you will become better too.

Love your Tool reactions. Best Tool stank face! I have used the sonic painting description before when trying to explain Tool. The best bands write things that mine the spirit and challenge the mind. Tool is one of the best there is at that.

Danny Carey is the current GOAT of rock drumming. He's a great jazz drummer too, has some side projects for fun ya know. The newest album Fear Innoculum is probably their best. Ive only had 4 years to study it so far, but it's ridiculously good. TOOL is Pink Floyd for the new millennium. 🤘🧙‍♂️🤘 Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
