In the early 2000s I worked in a restaurant with a preachers son. I had gone to the Houston show where Maynard was sick and the crowd sung for him all night. At the end he promised to add dates to the end of the tour to make up for the night. I immediately grabbed tix for a later show and offered a ticket to the preacher son if he would be the sober driver. 10 minutes in to the show he said "I feel like I'm on all kinds of drugs and can't explain how I feel, this is beyond amazing!" For weeks at work after that he never stopped saying thank you.

I admit I like songs from all type buy there are some types that takes an extra something for me to dig, like country or rap. Those musical genres require that something special to peck my intrest like Snoop Dogg, Miss Elliott, Dolly Parton, or Jon

The rappers almost always appreciate both the music and lyrics, and I love that and really appreciate it. Some people react on a surface level and I can tell they are not REALLY ready for TOOL, but you are ready. Keep listening to TOOL, you will find your life changing and the way you listen to music changing. TOOL just gives you something no other band can.

For "Tool" a recommendation is to definitely listen in to "Vicarious", my favourite song of this band - such great lyrics and overall an incredible song! Other than that, as we commented in the live chat, "Heilung", "Krigsgaldr" or "In Maidjan" are another great discovery for you - not quite "metal" but still somewhat related. Or Maria Franz' second project, "Euzen" with "Phobia" (or other songs) are great, too!

Sober, seeing it you get the sense of Maybard and his struggles. Schism is the song that made ME fall in love with the band. Its just layers of deep and hard sounds. And alot of their stuff dabbles on religion. Its just cool to see someone on their tool journey.

The end of the song, the instrumental is supposed to reflect the mind racing and someone going crazy trying to "make the pieces fit" it's such amazing song writing. Great reaction!

Great stuff as usual, brother. Your original take on the lyrics actually made me rethink the meaning of the song, which I've been listening to for the last 15 or so years. I think you'd love Lateralus, 46 & 2, Vicarious, and Wings for Marie. All are fantastic tracks. I always thought this song was an attempt to reconcile faith with reason. Both pieces fit in the sense that they provide answers for many aspects of life, but often seem to be at odds/unable to meet in the middle. Watching them fall away is a metaphor for growing up and either losing faith or holding on to it so fervently that science/reason seems at odds with your truest beliefs. For an unrelated but interesting suggestion, I think you'd have a fun time reacting to We Got the Moves by Electric Callboy.

Schism was the first Tool track I heard back in 2001 as a teenager. That was also my reaction - rewound to the start & listened to it over & over & then I was hooked on the band XD I love this reaction, how excited you are & the analysis & how it reminded me of that initial discovery. Thank you

I love how you got to the middle of the song as it started to mellow out, and saw that it was only half way done..."Oh! Thank God.." I know just how you feel. Hoping it never ends. Spiral out.

the relief at the realisation that the song keeps going for a while longer. 😄 I feel that. and I love the anger in the end of this song. "no. we are not going to let this relationship fall apart. we are not going to watch ourselves grow apart until we can't bridge the gap any more. we are gonna talk this through and we are gonna keep talking. because I know that this can work. I have seen it work. it's just a matter of us sitting down and connecting. we're not gonna let this relationship go to hell just because we let our connection fall away. we are not going to split up just because we are too lazy to do relationship work. not gonna happen. the pieces fit!" I take from this song that it is about a fundamental thing in every kind of relationship. between whoever. always the same mechanic. making it about the relationship between a person and their god is something I never thought about. but yea. still applies. it's about a core mechanic of any and all kinds of relationships.

Love Teddy Greys approach and take on this! Refreshing, observant and for me someone who understands the depth of Tool. For me a band of inspiration, reflection and everything I could ask from a band and artists as such. I'll never grow tired and their still kind of an enigma to me, they facinate, impress and scare me at the same time. Some of their music and lyrics makes me nervous and like I'm staring in to an abyss and they are intellects and mystics that I can't figure out. Have listened to to so many exellent bands, musicians and composers from different styles over the years, and Tool is right up there.

It's so very true what you say about being open minded and that being a metal/rock-head doesn't mean that you couldn't get experience such overwhelming feelings through rap. I pretty much grew up to rock and metal but it wasn't that long ago that a song from kendrick lamar actually made me cry because of such raw emotions and talent expressing himself... Giving other genres of music a chance isn't such a bad thing as some genre-constrained folks may propose, I mean, what's the worse that could happen? that you find out you like something you previously believed you wouldn't ever? oh wow, one more thing to like, so sad.

The middle part of this song always reminds me of the intro to Hells Bells by AC/DC, especially when the bells come in. Idk if that was the inspiration for Schism, but tool was definitely more intricate in their composition. And if I remember correctly, I think they are both in the same key. Thanks for the reaction!

I really appreciate not pausing during Tool songs. You're right, it is very much a journey. I'd love to see you do Wings for Marie (Pt.1) and 10,000 Days (Pt.2). The two songs together tell about Maynard dealing with his mother's passing after a 27 year battle with major health issues and paralysis. It's deep and incredibly beautiful. You really need to do them together (or at least back to back) to get the full story.

Great reaction and great questions. Here's my attempt to answer one of the more basic of the thousands that this song raises. The tumbling down, the falling down, the crumbling down are the consecutive steps in degree of magnitude that occur when communications and truth break down. First you tumble (no big deal), then you fall (a little more serious), then you crumble (very bad situation!). Maynard/Tool always write songs that can be interpreted in numerous high-level ways - religion, politics, economics, humanity. This song is a human one for me personally at this time but in 2 hours it will be something different and so on. That's the genius. Continue down the rabbit hole my friend...the community is coming with ya! And I'm a massive '85-'97 rap fan too by the way - powerful music is good music.

After all these years, I think what makes Schism so good. Then and now. It really is the absolute best of all the parts of Tool and their signature sound in one song. The song itself is amazing and the story is so very relevant to what is happening today. But the sounds and tones of each part of this song are iconic Tool at their very best. Seeing you experience it for the first time was in some ways even better. Enjoy this one - it has always been in my top 5 Tool songs.

Oh man, I just found your channel and I'm loving these Tool reactions! I immediately have so many suggestions for other bands and songs based on what you're pulling out of these, I'll drop some below! Schism was my introduction to Tool back in high school and is still one of my all time favorites. The music video is amazing too, completely unlike anything else being made at the time. It broke open my teenage brain in such a good way! Like a psychedelic trip even without adding substances to the mix. The mountain imagery you were talking about resonates for me too - their music is so cinematic, it can totally envelop and transport you. First suggestion for another band: Alice in Chains, absolutely essential for any metal education. "Love Hate Love" live at the Moore is where I'd send you first. It showcases Layne Staley's incredible voice and the raw emotion he poured into their performances. This one is a total dirge, operatic and melodramatic and tortured but cathartic. Second, since you're loving the lyrics, instrumental effects, layering and all the production details with Tool, you'll probably also love Nine Inch Nails. Definitely a genre defying project, but plenty of it is at least metal-adjacent. "Closer" is super popular but I'd suggest "March of the Pigs," "Wish," "Head Like a Hole," "Reptile," "Into the Void," "Physical" - there are so many! Third, have you tried Black Sabbath yet? If not, you should check out their song that's also called "Black Sabbath," the opening track from their (also eponymous) first album. 1970. 3 chords that launched the entire genre. Slow, spare, haunting, cinematic. I've got a bunch more ideas for more metal, and things that are not quite metal but might hit similar buttons in your brain based on your reaction here. I'm excited to watch through more of your stuff!

~FRISSON~ It is best described as a sudden rush or wave of emotions that some people experience when listening to an emotive piece of music. Frisson is the French word meaning to 'shiver' or to have 'chills'. But in this case, we're not shivering because we're cold, we're shivering because we're stimulated by music.

Hey Teddy yeah to answer that question in the chat earlier my mom went through a lot of bad relationships I learned from her and promised her to find somebody I was attracted to in everyway except the physical aspect first not saying my girl ugly but that was last concern. I was a was a drop out drug addict and she was everything I wasn't a virgin, college graduate, and only smokes weed. She gave me three kids that I love more than her and myself she compliments me in every way I know I don't deserve her and for 20 years I've been trying to earn that right. I'm not religious but bless this woman she's my temple my foundation. Thank you for listening 🙏 ❤ 😊
