The bars aren’t security they were originally a sign of wealth, when the property was built, in the 30’s. I may have to take them down 😂😂

Hi Guys, great video as usual. With regards to the wall I would have to side with James this time. If you plan to separate the spaces no point going half way and have it still visible from the road and have guests peeking over the wall.. I’ve visited the south of Portugal over a dozen times and always seem to get a rough flight! 🤢

My thought I just like a bit of privacy, but not enough to provoke curiosity in what’s on the other side of the wall. The flight was horrendous, the scariest I’ve been on. 😊

I would suggest a nicely built decorative wooden fence with some open spaces where Christina can place some plants. This could be a tentative temporary solution to find whether you are comfortable with a high wall in that space. Later on you can build a high or low more permanent wall according to your experience as concerns airbnb.

I'd go higher with the wall, but the 'couple compromise' would be a medium height solid wall with a trellis along the top. A big slab of a wall can be dominating visually, unless you break it up with planting. Then again you could build up the wall with rows of breeze blocks, and then see how it looks as you get higher, making the final decision before rendering it.

Goodness.. it was not our day!! One airport flooded the other one burned out!! And my hair 🥹I had it cut especially! Also soaked from socks all the way up. Very uncomfortable and miserable day! But it turned out ok once we got there 👌

the main purpose of the wall will probably be privacy for you as well as for your future guests - this point goes to James 😊. What you might also want to consider is the direction of wind: a high wall can provide good wind protection, but also cause downdrafts.

Your wall dilemma, I would suggest 2 walls with a roof, arches and old doors or gates, I'm sure there will be some nice double doors from an old building somewhere, once built put a lantern under the roof to light it, and lots of planting space, good luck

Hi James and Christina, happy home coming after that bad weather flight! The wall...picture, just over head height, Christina inspired double doors with vintage bank door, type handles. Probably too late now but I think a diagonal wall from the corner of the staircase to the corner of the outdoor kitchen would be nice, this way it would probably look less massive than a straight wall blocking it all off and you could even have it slope to fit the heights of both corners. The space on the side of the street where you wanna put the flowerbeds would have a nice irregular shape then

So glad to see you both safely back on solid ground, with that storm pelting down rain like that, I knew it would be a nasty flight. You did get a lot accomplished while you were there and now, big decisions at home. A lot to consider regarding the wall, drainage, heat gain and blocking the light. In terms of privacy, people only see over things if they are less than 6’ high unless they are at elevation, so in my opinion 6’ wall with some sort of trellis on top for climbing plants to filter light and sound, a softer landscape, less imposing! It seems harder to make decisions about your own home but, you’ll figure it out!💕🇨🇦

I’m vovó, we do keep busy. The flight was a white knuckle ride. Everyone was in silence the whole flight. No cheers or clapping when we landed. Just relief. 😊

Hmmm, that's such a lovely area that it's difficult to envision a wall there. I do see your point in building one. So if there needs to be a wall, and you want it for privacy, perhaps a taller one? What about the decorative kind with a pretty design with holes in it? The foliage would still give you privacy but it would allow some light and air thru? Just a thought. Cristina, I so empathize with you on the rough flight. I don't fly because I can't handle those sudden drops and bumpiness. Very weak stomach that way. I'd have to be comatose 🤣!! Just finished fitting a wren kitchen with the Milano trims.. this is the second I’ve fitted after doing mine 2 years ago! they can be a pain to attach those trims and decor panels. I have the same Matt black/pebble kitchen. Looks great when done.

Hi James and Cristina, what about having a combined idea for your wall and building it solid from the bottom up to the height of the existing cast balustrade (at the lower level) and then continuing the cast balustrades across from the right hand side on top of the wall which will give you the higher level finish combination. You could then have Bougainvillea or something you already have in mind growing up and around the balustrades with your garden area below which gives you both having an input in the design and all the things you both have in your ideas. Hi Mark, interesting idea, but I just wonder, would the balustrade look odd that high up. Actually I’ve just thought of something. From the land looking up the balustrades are that high, if I look in the direction of the courtyard from down there. I’ll take a look tomorrow. Hope you enjoyed your stay here. Have you considered a wall of any height would cause a heat sink effect? You and your guests will still hear dogs barking and people talking so a wall does not prevent much. Why not build a wrought iron "wall" covered with dense flowers or ivy type plants? In your walk-around I saw a lot of wrought iron gates. Maybe you could use them on top of a small retaining wall, allowing a barrier and ventilation at the same time. Is it not common in a tropical environment to use flowers and vines to separate areas of outdoor living? Just a thought! Tallahassee, Florida. USA.

Might be a crazy thing, but months ago when you showed that back door with no outside access, I thought it would be nice if you had deck out there, that went along the house towards your big building, that staircase to nowhere could go sideways and up over to join up with the decking from the backdoor to nowhere. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 The kitchen looks awesome, I had a black kitchen once, looks stunning, they are hard to keep clean.

Looks like you needed a boat to get through the airport. What a mess! That kind of rain was what my family referred to as a "frog strangler". Seems like the consensus is a higher wall. I think it will give more visual privacy as well as impeding the sound.

Maybe I’m greedy but I would not share that entrance and space with Air B&B renters at all. I would reorient the entrance and outdoor space in the lower house to other street corner and fence off a portion of the lower yard where you park for the renters. This would give you both maximum privacy.
