There's a global sand crisis and no one is talking about it | Vince Beiser | TEDxPenn

As an investigative journalist, Vince Beiser is always looking for the next fascinating story. Wired Magazine sent him to a remote village in India to investigate a murder over one of the most precious natural resources in the world. To give you a hint, this resources is the foundation of our modern civilization--it is in the concrete of our buildings and the chips of our computers. And it’s running out. Award-winning journalist Vince Beiser will dive into the logistics behind the most abundant resource in the world, and why we’re running out of it. Author of “The World in a Grain: The Story of Sand and How it Transformed Civilization,” every audience member will leave with a newfound appreciation for the sand on our beaches, inside our smartphones, and in our lives. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Morroco has been having issues with this for their pristine beaches being bulldozed away, its become an economic preference to shipping and being an apart of the tourist economy.

Come to India and you will see how huge this problem is. As he said lot of ways used to steal sand. As River sand is taken the river beds go shallow and rivers die . Kaveri is suffering a lot due to it.

Good presentation and scary. Our economies seem to be built on using earth's resources. Want to make more money? Use more of those resources and faster. But where will this take us?

Using less is not a long term solution. As long as population grows it is only a stopgap measure (that also makes people poorer). Stoping population growth and possibly reducing population is the only real solution.

His opinion doesn't seem very professional to me. He is not an expert. Just like every other man, who's read some articles in the newspaper, he thinks, that the solution is to use less, to produce less. So let's just disappear, let's all just die out, that would be the best for the environment. The easiest thing to do is to restrain and forbid and not trying to find some new ways of using our resources or getting them from the space. I personally want to grow and develop and wont let somebody tell me how I have to exist instead to live.

Whenever these topics come up, it's always just too much consumption, too much this, too much this. And of course, the current-day boogeyman of individual automobility. Is saying "too many people" really that much of a taboo? All the current environmental and resource problems stem from that.

Depends on the situation. If you work from home, you would build your house out of wood, you wouldn't need a car yourself to commute, and you would just have people drop food at your door or grow it yourself. No real reason to have a car or garage as far as I can tell. If you have a car, why? If you could instead just click a button and have a driver show up, why would you want to own a car yourself? I have better things to do than to sit behind a wheel and watch for street lights, police, and holes in the road. That's a job for somebody else or a robot in my opinion... Some might like the freedom I suppose, but it does seem to be a waste of resources to have a car made if you only drive it a few minutes each day, so not very human if you care about others to take that path, is it? Also if you work from home, there's no need to build another building for you to work in so you've reduced your consumption of a car and an office and you have a better quality of life with less pollution, no traffic, and no need to maintain a piece of metal in the driveway... nor do you make noise for your neighbors and you avoid putting brake and tire and petroleum material into the air, etc...
