There is nothing natural about disaster | Rohini Swaminathan | TEDxPlaceDesNations
She grew up in a small forest in South India “the kind, you know with monkeys,” and now she works on the cutting edge of humanitarian satellite delivery. Once witness as a girl to the devastation of the 2004 tsunami, today she is a Geomatician working to bring faster, more efficient, more informed humanitarian action and disaster risk reduction. With climate change and burgeoning global populations every piece of the planet is at risk from natural or manmade hazards. What we do with this knowledge is what can change disaster back into hazard. Swaminathan takes us through UNOSAT’s cutting edge work mapping floods, earthquakes, fire, drought, war, rebellion, and tsunamis using satellites as the key to this battle against disaster.
Rohini Swaminathan is a Geomatics engineer working with UNOSAT, the Operational Satellite Applications Programme of UNITAR, the United Nations Institute of Training and Research based in Geneva, Switzerland. She also trains local decision-makers in Asia and Africa on systems to reduce disaster-related risks in Bangladesh, and countries in East Africa. Previously she worked with DEVELOP, part of NASA’s Applied Sciences Program in the United States.

I love you, Rohini! This was so inspiring for me. It is awesome to hear how you transformed from a girl from a forest, living with monkeys to a wonderful cutting edge Geomatician. You moved me and the rest of my classmates. I am only 11, but I feel like I can fly after watching this! ☺️

Simply, Great presentation...
awesome performance. if we have more technology available it means we can prevent or reduce the risk and damage of natural disaster. ....
I want to study Computational Epidemiology to make the most of my Public Health and Computer Science degrees. Thank you for this presentation, Rohini. Your presentation was inspiration for me to keep working toward my dreams to help the world.

@@ramadhan1481 Well, life happened. I moved to San Francisco, found my dream job, got married and we're expecting our first child during the pandemic. :) I have been working 4 years in the Enterprise AI industry programming data visualizations with brilliant data scientists. I'll work my way up to architecture level and then consider going back to pursuing a PhD in CompEpi after kids get older.
This was really amazing.
Loved this talk
This is great work. Congratulations to you, I am more inspired even as a public health researcher

Nasa should make an app or device to alert people before the disaster comes around.. Government should provide free devices to the farmers.

Poverty and farming should never be in the same sentence. That is an oxymoron Baby the real problem is over taxation of successful people.
Worse is gonna come

this sucks a lot it is so boring for 12 year old but still hats off to the presentation you can see the hard work clearly
SECOND!
Her heart is in the right place but this:"There is nothing natural about disaster" just dont have sense. Period. We could also say that that technology that saves lives is not natural and we would be completely right. This video should be called:"Lets fight natural with unnatural" and it would still have the same content. Youre fighting on the wrong battlefield little girl. Good luck.

it's actually about the social construction of vulnerability to disaster. natural phenomena occur, but their impact on societies is determined by societal factors, one of which is technology.

Your expression "little girl" indicates arrogance and chauvinism. Who are you? What do you have achieved? Learn respect first!
boring
