There Is a Fountain

If you'd like an MP3, please email info@thencrew.com with your request. :-)
I had someone request this song last year and then, while I had been singing it a little last week, they contacted me wondering if I might be doing this song. I thought that was rather neat timing. :-) Such good words. Whenever I sing a hymn with more than 5 verses, I'm reminded of years ago singing in churches and the singing director sometimes skipping verses. I couldn't see removing any to shorten the song as they are all so good. Should do a hashtag like #keepallverses. :-)
Lyrics:
There is a fountain filled with blood,
Drawn from Immanuel’s veins,
And sinners plunged beneath that flood
Lose all their guilty stains:
Lose all their guilty stains,
Lose all their guilty stains;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood
Lose all their guilty stains.
The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in His day;
And there may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away:
Wash all my sins away,
Wash all my sins away;
And there may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away.
Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood
Shall never lose its pow’r,
Till all the ransomed church of God
Be saved, to sin no more:
Be saved, to sin no more,
Be saved, to sin no more;
Till all the ransomed church of God
Be saved, to sin no more.
E’er since by faith I saw the stream
Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die:
And shall be till I die,
And shall be till I die;
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die.
When this poor, lisping, stamm’ring tongue
Lies silent in the grave,
Then in a nobler, sweeter song,
I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save:
I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save,
I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save;
Then in a nobler, sweeter song,
I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save.
Words by: William Cowper

    The song “There is a fountain filled with blood” was penned by William Cowper, an English poet and Hymnodist. Apparently, William never fully recovered from the shock of his mother’s death, which occurred when he was only six years old. Not only had William lost his mother at a very early age, at the age of 25, he also lost his father, then followed by his brother's death - the only other surviving child in a family of seven children. As a young man, William fell in love with a woman and dated her for years. They planned to marry, but in the end, her father did not approve of the marriage. His second romance also failed, and William’s darkness deepened. The added strain of an approaching examination that could have secured him a position as a clerkship of journals in the house of Lords only made things worse. William Cowper was 33 years old when he met Jesus in an asylum he was admitted too, after he had tried to commit suicide for the 3rd time during a period of insanity and depression. Although William met Jesus in the asylum, he continued to struggle with loneliness and depression all the days of his life. But despite the pain, his hope still remained in the gospel. He wrote this song during one of his darkest hours, “There is a fountain filled with blood” (Based on Zechariah 13:1). It is indeed encouraging knowing that the blood of the Lamb shall never lose its power till the church of God is saved to sin no more. Oh, what a thought! Thanks for sharing this song and God bless :)

    A beautiful rendition... but isn't this a gospel hymn? Though there are numerous ways to sing (in your case a lovely softness and somnolence) as gospel (good news) music shouldn't this hymn's goal and emphasis be to bring listeners into a state of gladness, joy and faith in the redemption of Christ? The pace and characteristic of gospel hymns, as such, ought to be upbeat and quickening with the intention to convert and edify. I'd love to hear more of your beautiful hymns with these thoughts in mind. Clay S., Waukegan, IL

    I think we should leave it to the Holy Spirit to convert and edify. He doesn't need any 'manipulation' on our part. If we follow His leading, even in singing, he can convict and save. There is no singing 'formula'.
