Have you ever read the Stormlight Archive? There's a line in the first book where an excessively serious military character is told to tell his men to go away and talk about something else instead of listening in on the main characters' conversation. This guy then turns to his men and tells them to "go and converse amongst yourselves in a lighthearted manner."

Also worth noticing: Charlie actually cheated in her excercise, she didn't share anything vulnerable about her. Everyone knows she loves everyone, it wasn't something personal to her. Which is probably the point, as we end up learning that Charlie has a tendency to suppress everything that makes her unconfortable.

Her heart's in the right place, but she doesn't really seem to know what she's doing. The biggest thing I've noticed is that Charlie's ideas for redemption all involve basic goodness lessons like apologizing, roleplay, and these trust exercises, but never actually addresses anyone's individual sins, or really shows she understands how they happen, as seen by Angel's reaction to the roleplay. I put that down to her mostly being a sheltered royal, and as Husk describes it "A bleeding heart who wants to fix everyone else's problems except her own.

She's aware of this flaw of hers, though, that's why she gets more confident only when other people join the Hotel staff. Vaggie gave her the confidence to start, but she's not really sure of herself until Alastor comes knocking and brings his merry brigade to help. Charlie giving Vaggie the "duty" of the trust exercizes is exactly because she knows that's something she can't really grasp in a meaningful way, and she knows her gf would do a way better job than her 💞

And I think that's on purpose. As far as we know she's the first person in Hell to give redemption any weight. So there's no one to teach her, there's nothing for her to learn from, no past attempts (that we know of), no tried and true method for redemption in Hell. There's only the squalor of the sinners who suffer there and the knowledge they bring with them from earth. And given how awful or hopeless everyone is in Hell, I doubt anyone would have given her more than crumbs (or anything at all) on how redemption works or what it is meant to do, if the sinners or demons knew any of that to begin with. She's quite literally inventing the wheel when it comes to redemption, not because she's the first to think about it, but because she's the first one to actually commit and earnestly seek to bring redemption to fruition. Charlie's working with what she knows, which is very little, and she's the only one in Hell with the redemption initiative. She's going to have to learn on her own how this all works.

Vivianne Medrano herself mentioned early on that Charlie is a flawed rehabilitator, she confirmed she doesn't have the proper tools to heal and reform sinners. So yup, this analysis is accurate! It's pretty evidently a critique on people like her, bleeding hearts who want to help everybody, but for the wrong reasons. I wonder if, as the seasons go along, Charlie learns better, proper empathy to understand sinners problems and how to deal with them, as opposed to how *she* would deal with them.

I mean I think Charlie wants to help people for valid reasons, getting people out of hell and into a utopian afterlife is hardly a bad reason to want to help people, and she's not doing it for like personal gain or anything. The issue is more what said at first that she doesn't really actually know *how* to heal people because she is so overly trusting and ignorant of the realities of what these people want and are like.

I'm glad you mentioned that trust falls are not easy! I've been pressured into doing trust falls before and people were really confused when I was too scared to do them. And people also didn't understand that, due to my social anxiety, verbally and politely opting out is really hard for me and I kind of just go nonverbal instead. It's also really refreshing to see you talk about how, in these group settings, forcing people to share only makes them feel more uncomfortable. Going through school I was put in a lot of those situations and it made my "shyness" worse. Now that I can freely participate or not participate in these things with my friends, I'm much more talkative with them.

As an autistic person who has social anxiety comorbid with it; So many people just start acting weird if I keep refusing to do trust falls. Like, I'm fat, a goth and and traumatized to heck and back as well (there might even be some undiagnosed C-PTSD in there somewhere, lol), so I generally can't help but feel like that other person is going to absolutely drop me like a brick the moment I as much as lean back. And just saying; I'm oversensitive to pain thanks to my autism, so inevitably plummeting to the floor would sting a little extra in my case. And the people leading those exercises always get weirdly pushy with me every time I get forced to attend one of those things; I often have to actively say no like 5 or 6 times at the very least (I always stay polite, though), and even then they keep pushing to turn that no into a yes. I swear, it's like those people have one functioning brain cell... Like, how am I even supposed to remotely trust anyone in that room if the person leading that exercise won't even respect my boundaries on that one? It's such an oxymoron.

My theory is that ultimately, Charlie won't achieve her goals via therapy "techniques" but by simply creating a safe space in Hell that is an escape from the rat race. Where people can be free (or at least temporarily escape) the pressures and exploitation of being in such a hostile environment, to be themselves, find themselves, and form real bonds with people. Hopefully that's how it'll play out in season 2, especially if Charlie can demonstrate that by protecting Angel from Valentino.

  • @hyukleberry5567

    @hyukleberry5567

It's already happening. Her exercises don't really help, but the safe space and positive environment of the hotel has inspired change. I feel like a thing you go through with bad mental health is the belief that it won't ever be better and nothing will fix it, so you enter a self fulfilling prophecy. In this case, none of them believe in redemption when they're asked. However, they've been subconsciously infected by Charlie's hopeful attitude anyway and are 'entertaining' her dreams like Vaggie does. They're also just becoming better people, because the friendships they've made signify that you can make the most out of a bad situation and be happy. I do think Charlie will eventually get a wake up call though. There's no way she goes through this whole show not knowing that her ideas won't work. At that point, someone at the hotel will just tell her.

Charlie has almost no baseline let’s be honest. Her dad seems ok as a person (aside from being a bit of an absent deadbeat, and his depression) and her mom was probably a decent person/parent growing up… but Charlie is otherwise surrounded by the worst of the worst. She has not adequately seen stable thinking and dynamics from her population, it’s no wonder she doesn’t understand the nuances of therapy and change, she has seen absolutely none of it. But you have to walk before you can run, Charlie is a pioneer as far as hell is concerned, and they almost always stumble and get things wrong before finding their footing. She stumbled hard at several points but still managed to bring together a strong bond between her friend group and inspire others and helped them to live happier and more honest. God I love this show

I think this episode does a great job of showing how Charlie and Vaggie, despite good intentions, don't really know what they are doing, but also shows how the group improve over time. More than anything, what helps the guests reform is being in a safe area, with people who care about them. That may not sound like much, but in an environment where gang wars, harassment and exploitation are "just another day", it can mean so much. Also, super looking forward to the Angel Dust episode, and hoping to see some stuff on Pentious. And Lucifer. And maybe Helluva Boss

It's a shame that the show's pacing is as wild as it is, because it would've been amazing to have a lot more episodes showing Charlie getting a better grasp of how to actually rehabilitate these people. It's interesting that Vaggie somehow made the group trust each other more through her military exercise, even though she probably did not know exactly why, and I see herself having a hard time trusting people in general. I wonder how her time in the exorcist angelic army affects her hard-shelled personality. Please do a Vaggie analysis video!

This also kind of mirrors the B plot with Alastor. He's meeting with an established group of people he's known for a long time, vulnerabilities are shared, and different levels of 'trust' are explored. His venture is more negative in relations, while Charlie's and Vaggie's grow positive despite not really knowing what they are doing.

He got really annoyed when Carmilla expressed how she didn't care about his absence and IMMEDIATELY disliked Lucifer! In the recent episode too he vastly overestimated himself. I dint think it's a matter of him thinking others are lower but more that he's higher so when that isn't the case he feels not in control anymore and will do his best to stay on top of the situation. Which in lucifers case was to beat him emotionally rather than physically

We did trust falls in my high school theatre class in the 2000s. We didn't share anything, nor do it off of the stage (that is insanely dangerous), but we did fall backwards from standing and catch each other. It was a lesson to physically show the importance of working together and trusting each other while performing together.

8:10 This right here. Once during summer camp, our group had climbed up this alpine tower (I think that's what it was called), and I had a real hard time getting back down since I had to jump off and trust that the harness would keep me safe. It took the guy who had climbed up with me, a fellow camper who was basically the big teddy bear of the group, it took him physically helping me through it, with my consent, in order for me to finally let go and be lowered down. I have no problem heights, had no problems with climbing trees, on roofs, and other tall places, and even jumping down onto my Mom's bed before, but something about that experience was the exception. Perhaps it was just because of HOW high it was, or maybe the rope, or the wind rocking the structure. But I most certainly know that it's the feeling of falling that's what gets me, since I have a crippling phobia of anything rollercoasters and other theme park rides, even the baby ones. I DON'T like the motions, I HATE the feeling of being upside down (linked to something from my childhood), and I DON'T like the feeling of nearly being launched into space.

Its very interesting in the scene where Husk yelling at Angel explains as a bartender he knows everyone's problems it comes off like the creator of the show just outright explaining everyone's issues. And the biggest problem may well be Charlie. In that she is avoidant to her issues with her position and power. She keeps trying to overwhelm everyone with her positivity and her need for empathy. SHe wants to connect to everyone. But because she was raised as a literal sheltered princess she doesn't have the same experiences to connect with. She wants to be the one breaking down people's barriers but she doesn't have the tools to do it. But she does have something that everyone there needs. Sanctuary. She has the power and position to provide people the space they need and the community with others that can relate to them. She will eventually grow to be able to better connect with people. But she needs to deal with her own issues first and turn that into the ability to protect people so they can work out their issues with those who can relate.

Also definitely agree that those trust exercises have always looked bogus, and wouldn't be surprised if they appear so much in pop culture because of how sketchy they seem (or to make an easy writing transition of characters starting to trust each other). They aren't disability-safe (both for the person falling and those catching them) because there's no guarantee that the person doing the catching has the best arm strength to do so, and even if they are able to, that doesn't always mean someone is trustworthy. Catching someone from falling isn't the same as trusting someone/being vulnerable enough to have a close relationship.

In season 1 Husk sums up Vaggie as "she's judgmental of everyone because she hates herself"; I get the vibe that with Lute it's going to be something similar. And with Vaggie and Lute having a similar background of angelic military, part of that way of thinking could have been molded in that shared environment- one that might enable overly high standards for one's self and a tendency to project one's own undesirable qualities on the "other" as self-defense. In short, Lute seems the prime candidate for exploring something that's close to internalized homophobia.

His idea of building trust is actually a great way to create trauma and cause lifelong mental scars. Especially since he recommended it as a form of group therapy and not building intimacy and trust between a romantic couple. I just felt that needed to be said as a critique of his trust building exercise without going into the NSFW details inherent in it.
