I see “heavy metal that you wear” as maybe jewellery, specifically rings. going back to ultraviolence “he hit me and it felt like a kiss”. I think this is a similar idea. “life rocked me ultra softly like the heavy metal that you wear”. another hit that felt like a kiss

I see it as her taking the drug, zoning out despite trouble in her life (that now feels far away), she's rocked to sleep "ultra softly" because she's high and numb. The "heavy metal that you wear" part is slightly foreboding (and shows that she's not a novice, but already deep in it or looking back) and refers to the all the 'heavy" or hard aspects of the drug that come with the "soft" effects: heavy withdrawals, side effects, increasing social isolation (slowly loosing your energy, interests, personality - which I usually associate with the "took your life away" part). MARZIPAN because people in withdrawal crave sugar/sweets as a substitute. This woman surprised me with her...almost random interpretations, most seemed way off the mark. Maybe do some research before filming yourself interpreting lyrics about such a specific topic. And SHE'S a therapist AND wrote a book about/related to addiction??? Kinda worrying.

I'm pretty sure the "writing in blood on my walls and shit" is another reference to the Manson m*rders, where the k*llers wrote things on the walls in their victims' blood. Definitely a dark song, but so dreamy and ethereal sounding at the same time

I always thought it refers to Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue literally writing all over the walls with his own blood, during the darkest days of his heroin addiction. It's a relatively well-known fact, in relation to him especially and to Motley Crue in general. Because it also works as a callback to her "Motley" line, I never considered that it would mean anything else.

@@michellebastiani6470 wow that’s absolutely amazing. Congratulations on your sobriety. I had a very similar experience. I went in to a 90 day treatment program and three days before I went in she released the love video. I remember her talking about being young and in love and I remember it being a goal of mine because I’ve always been a hopeless romantic, and all I wanted was to be healthy and find love (spent way too long in an abusive relationship) And in the song the way she says “don’t worry, baby“ it just made me ready. I had no more fear. All of a sudden all my worries went away, and I just dove straight in and went into a program.. not too long after I got out, the whole album was out. I heard heroin and it was incredible how relatable it is. When she talks about winter in the city and how that can effect you rang true to me. I remember going to San Francisco for work in February very early on in my addiction when i was just dabbling. It was February but still hot out. I met people in the haight/ashbury area and the way I saw these people and the usage of drugs stuck with me. Ive never seen drugs so accessible. Still never seen anything like it. When I returned to Boston where I lived my addiction spiraled. I feel being in the city contributed to that. So finally I came home to small town Ohio in beginning of 2017 to leave the atmosphere that was making me worse. I remember after I got out of treatment (couldn’t have phones either) i listened to this song a few times a day for a year at least. It’s crazy because after thousands upon thousands of times listening to it I still choke up and sometimes full on bawl my eyes out. I cried pretty heavy watching Mere’s reaction to it.

Man… this one hits hard. I had a very close friend… partner, we cared so much about each other. She was so talented, she lost her physical therapy license due to drug use, and I couldn’t get her out of the seedy motel she was at. The last time I saw her was outside of that motel room. I was a fresh recovering addict at the time. I am glad you clarified that Lana didn’t “let” this person use heroin. I didn’t let her use it. I couldn’t force her. We kissed one last time and that was it. She was gone. It’s happening over and over to families everywhere. Thank you for covering this song.

I wish I was able to be present for this live! I have this theory and am super curious if anyone else has seen it this way. I listened to this song so many times before I even thought about this, but it makes sense to me. Pretty much every time she references shooting up (drugs), there is a g*n cocking noise in the background. To me it adds so much meaning to this song because she starts out talking about sending someone on an airplane (getting h;gh). Toward the end, it sounds like she starts using herself because of the regret out of what happened with this other person, or wanting to join them, or for several other possible reasons. Please let me know if anyone has any thoughts about this! It could be totally off, but I listen to Lana all of the time and always find random things in her songs that seem to connect with other songs or themes. Thanks for reading. :)

I used to think that when she says "I put you on an aeroplane, destined for a foreign land", it is about getting high with heroin. But now when I know that her ex died from overdose, and looking at the lyrics again, it kinda sound like she was doing heroin, and with the ex, or she could be the one who introduced it to him. And it eventually killed him. Therefore she said SHE put him on the aeroplane, and thought/hoped that he would come back (either from the ecstasy or from death) to tell her everything's ok.

What I love about Lana's music is how all of us relate to the same song on so many different ways. For example for me heroin represents my childhood town (where I still live, unfortunately) It's very small, toxic a lot of drug and alcohol use. Here people often start drinking at the age of 12. It has the highest drug use (by percentage of citizens) in the whole country. And yet sometimes it's all you have. It can lure you in that world and make you the worst version of yourself. I'm 16 I have good grades, nice behavior and all that stuff but my parents have no idea how many times I was wasted not knowing where I am and how I got there. I stopped drinking but when you live here sometimes you just can't escape it. And I am living for the moment when I can leave this town for college and hopefully leave this country as well. Cause deep inside I know I'm not the way this town makes me look like. And I know that I can only become better person when I move somewhere else and have new start. Edit: also we all know how many addicts started with: "just wanna try it" to see how it feels saying that they won't get addicted, that they can control themselves etc. And the same thing happens with this town. All the good kids be like it's just one night in club, then it's just one drink, one cigarette, "that won't become their lifestyle", they won't get addicted to it. But they do. And even if you wanna quit it it's too late cause you already surrounded yourself with people who wouldn't let you go like that.

I'm majoring in Portuguese/English here in Brazil and one of theses days I've read a critic about an portuguese writer, "Florbela Espanca", saying that she "used her blood as ink for her poems" (not quoting) meaning she 'exhausted' her life onto her poetry... That got me thinking if maybe, both in "Heroin" and in "hope is a dangerous thing", this what Lana means by "writing in blood": that she's tired of pouring every bit of her life onto her songs, wich would make even more sense in "hope" because she talks about being "24/7 Sylvia Plath", that is another woman-poet that "poured" here actual life in to her art. This also resonates with her poem "Salamander", where she says that "she doesn't want to sell her stories anymore". Florbela Espanca was deeply criticized at her time for making her poems "too biographical", she was treated like she wasn't an actual poet/writer and for a long time she was forgotten for it; Sylvia Plath also is in this category of "autobiographical" poems/stories but on both, and on Lana, there's so much more than that.

"ultrasoftly" is a refference to the word "ultraviolence" which the character Alex in A Clockwork Orange used a lot in his speech, and which lana refferenced before in songs. So, here "ultrasoftly" is to say actually not so softly, since the next line is "Like the heavy metal that you wear". So it's a poetic way of saying he hit her and she probably she was too indoctrinated to mind it, since she talks about this guy like he's Charles Manson or some other cult leader.

15:15 I don’t believe the lyric is actually “jumping off from the walls into the docks and shit” following the “writing in blood on my walls and shit” im pretty sure the next line after is “dripping off from the walls into the ducts and shit” meaning the blood on the wall

She has another lyric "dope shoot it up straight to the heart plz". Maybe she tried heroin experimentally but i doubt she could be as functional as she is if it had lasted a long time. If it's not a metaphor then im guessing she ditched it pretty quickly. Its a terrible thing to go through i have a lot of emparhy for addicts i know what opiate withdrawl feels like because im on prescription pain management and if i miss a dose it is a horrendeus feeling, you feel hot flushes one min and cold shivers the next (maybe that lyric "its hot even for february" could be a refremce to that) also sleep is impossible you get leg cramps and body tremors (she talked about a rubling making it hard to sleep) but there are so many ways these lyrics could be intetpreted so who knows. I liked your analysis.

Very random song to recommend but could you listen to the song Poachers Pride by Nicole Dollanganger? I first heard it about a month ago and have been thinking about it since.

I had said something a few weeks ago about Nicole after I watched a reaction of hers to an artist who's name escapes my mind RN. But I had commented that it was very reminiscent of Nicole Dollaganger. Honestly I don't know if she would be able to handle Nicole's music. And to be a hundred percent honest, I think she might have a couple opinions that wouldn't sit well with me. Especially since she has had the reactions and opinions to certain lyrics of Lana's and choices for some of the men in certain videos. It just gives me pause because I think she could quite easily be "too" judgy when it comes to Nicole's music. Just imo.

I personally get from this she is referring to a man as heroin and he is her heroin and she knows he is not good for her and he is her heroin. Bit that is just my personal thoughts on this...
