"did she date my ex" stoppp I laughed so hard 😂 The idea of having the responsibility to fix him or men she was with in a main thematic umbrella in the whole Ultraviolence album. She really shows the psychomachia of wanting to please but also wanting to make them better. Despite it all, she chooses to stay because she's not aware that she deserves better. That comes in more in Honeymoon when she sees that her need to please these men is just the honeymoon phase of a relationship and she actually comes to realize that it's time to walk away because it damages her wellbeing. It's part of her evolution. As the albums progress you'll see that more.

I read somewhere that these lyrics: "Oh what can I do? Nothing, my sparrow blue" were a real dialogue between her and her boyfriend. He answered her that she can't do anything and called her his sparrow. It makes this song even sadder. Thanks ❤

@@hugofrotaAs far as I know we haven't heard Lana explain that lyric. I think it's a term of endearment like Sweetheart, Honey and Babe. I'm sure it means something important to Lana. She's said she likes to add little things in her song that only she (and sometimes family or friends) will understand exactly what it's means. I think that's probably common for artists.

This song is so sad, and it's clearly about her relationship with barrie- james i always remember what she said when they broke up: "Probably the relationship I’ve been in for the last three years. Definitely demolished that through tons of depression and insecurity. Now it’s just an untenable relationship, impossible because of my emotional instability."

This song has made me curl up and weep before. Loving someone with depression is so hard. You'd do anything to take their pain from them. It physically hurts to see them unhappy. And as someone who has struggled severely with mental illness my whole life sometimes this song feels like I'm singing to myself. The instrumentals fit the theme perfectly too and capture that longing aching feeling of wanting happiness for yourself or someone else This is in my top 3 Lana songs

I think many people miss a lot of Lana’s humor or sarcasm in her lyrics. Not saying the song’s subject is humorous, but her singing “I paint the house black, and my wedding dress too,” is a rather funny image. Makes me think of the movie BeetleJuice. So many of her songs have a twisted humor to them, but because other lyrics are so heavy it gets overlooked. Love your reactions - they’re super insightful ✌️

This song is dedicated to Lana's ex-boyfriend, who used to be one of her few men who wasn't that abusive to her (my personal impression and observation, cause Lana usually doesn’t talk much about her personal relationships). I guess they really loved each other, but because of his and her dark personalities, they were not able to make it. Barrie used to have depression at that time, sadly, Lana is also not the most optimistic person. She moved to London for some time to live with him. He is a singer too. At that time Lana kept getting popularity, so whenever you see some videos of that time when they both were caught in public or at some music related events, it is clear that all attention goes to Lana, while Barrie stays aside just observing. He wanted the recognition too I believe, so at those times, especially, taking to consideration he had depression and his career was not as successful as Lana’s(must admit he is a talented singer too), it was obvious he was jealous. At the same point I want to say he used to always protect her from her annoying or crazy fans in public. You can see he really loved her and cared for her. I think it was not a good time for two of them then. Maybe if they started dating later, when they were not as vulnerable as they were, they would have had a better ending, who knows..? I guess their story is really sad😞, their relationship was one of the longest from all Lana’s. It was sincere, but painful love… I believe they had much in common.. it was just not a right time for them.. You can tell, cause Lana still gives a positive feedback about him. Barrie does the same. They still keep in touch as friends :) You can check out their cover for a song “Summer Wine” on Lana’s channel. They sound great together! Very magnificent cover ☺️ watching the video to the cover now, gives me a feeling it is a dream, that was never supposed to become true… Thank you for your reaction!🥰 Looking forward to the next ones😁

This is from her Ultraviolence album, where, as another commenter pointed out, the central themes surround the idea of wanting to simultaneously please/appeal to and change/fix the men she’s romantically involved with. Another song in the album that’s very similar to Black Beauty, but I think a bit more direct, is Shades of Cool. I’d really love to see your reaction/analysis of that one at some point! The chorus literally breaks out with “you are unfixable, I can’t break through your walls”

My interpretation: This song is love song to her loved one because she knows that he can't see the light of life. She wants to show him the light in everything around them. The "red" cherries resembles love, passion, and intimacy. The sun is "yellow" and represents joy, comfort, and vision. The ocean "blue" represents being embraced, peace, and perseverance. Brown is the color you get when you mix red, yellow, and blue together...and that's the color she dyed her hair. To be strong, dark, and proud. Trees stand tall, provide shade, and it's trunk is sturdy. That is what she is. She is the tree that bridges both worlds together, the world of light and the world of darkness. And like a tree, it's branches reaches towards the sky for light while it's roots digs deep into the darkness. And where do sparrows make their nests? On trees! Sparrows are song birds and they sing beautiful songs for their mate. So if he can't see the light, then maybe he'll listen.

What I associate this song to the most, in a purely subjective way, it's to this one time during my darkest phase, when I had suicidal idealizations and felt completely hopeless: I decided to go out for a run around a park at night, took my headphones and phone with me, put Lana's music on on shuffle, and this song came on. Despite the fact I was running, I couldn't take my mind off my negative thoughts and emotions, but when Dark Beauty came on, I really listened to the lyrics for the first time, and it was so soothing, I felt she was singing it to me. It gave me a sparkle of hope, thinking about how beautiful life can be, starting with the fact that such beautiful music and art exists and how it can brighten you up for a little while at least.

I love how deep you dig into these songs, trying to interpret the works of art and deep emotion! One song by Lana, that's on the "Lust For Life' album, has always been beautifully challenging for me to understand. It's called "13 Beaches". The song has a haunting need to escape from the world with the sound of a cinematic ballad. Somehow it's relatable, but I'm not sure why.

Hi Mere! I discovered your channel over the weekend, and I'm really enjoying your thoughts on all these different songs, particularly since you are much better than I at understanding metaphors and the subtle imagery they lend to music. If you're interested in songs relating to addiction, you may want to check out Remember me Happy by Alex Warren. Alex released this song shortly after his mother who struggled with alcohol addiction died from liver and renal failure. From what has been said about his relationship with her, I can see how this song might be from her perspective as an apology or from his perspective as he struggled to care for her but also set boundaries.

I think this song is about how is hard to be in a relationship when ur the only one who´s actually tryng to make things work out, i felt this one so deeply, one of my favorites of ultraviolence album🖤

I don’t think it’s about being “the only one actually trying,” I think it’s about her lovers sheer inability to put in the same effort she did. How despite her efforts there’s nothing much she or her lover can do.

Love this one, great break down as usual. I really got into this song when my dog was diagnosed with cancer. We tried everything to help him, but he succumbed to the disease. I was playing this song for myself so much. "oh, what can I do?" because there was nothing I could do. "Life is beautiful but you don't have a clue" and I knew that the world was full of beautiful things, and that year (2019) before he got sick, was going really well. But it just broke me. I had to feel my feelings of deep grief and there was no escaping it. And it's interesting you used the description of "unfixable" because in Shades of Cool, the chorus is literally "But you are unfixable, I can't break through your world, 'cause you live in shades of cool, your heart is unbreakable" This song also reminds me of my first boy-friend I had as an adult who was an alcoholic. I remember asking him, "why don't you spend the day sober?" and he responded with "Now, why would I do that?" It was a hard time and I was very naive. He also lived on a street that was named Belair, so that song reminds me of him too. I hope he's doing well today. He was very self-destructive. Anyway, I hope you're doing well, Mere. Bright and light colors look beautiful on you! 💜

Out of all of Lana's songs, this one definitely hit me the hardest, VERY close to home. I remember hearing it for the first time. Sure, vocally speaking, it is angelical, no doubt. Poetically/lyrically, it absolutely destroyed me to the point of causing me a breakdown. I interpreted the lyrics a little differently than what they possibly were meant to/for. It felt as if a younger version of myself was trying to speak to me. A version of myself that wants to fight/change, and do everything in his power to take my current version out of the depression I was feeling at the time. It made me rethink so many things and build enough courage to want to heal. This song is one of the reasons why I'm alive today.
