    The Ride Of Steel story hits a bit close to home. There was someone who did not have legs that wanted to go on The Big One at the amusement park my dad was a manager at. The only difference is my dad explained that he would have been thrown out of the ride due to being amputated from the waist down, making the lap bars ineffective. The man was more than happy with this explanation and dad put him on a ride with overhead restraints for as long as he wanted to go on it!

  • @jameshorath5624

    The Ride of Steel story is not quite accurate. The accident actually happened at Six Flags New England. After the accident the ride was retrofitted with new T bar restraints painted purple and re opened the next season as Bizarro. It remained open as Bizarro until the end of the 2015 season. In 2016 it was repainted using the original color scheme and opened as Superman the Ride. It currently is open and remains one of the top rated steel coasters in the world, ranking 4th in the 2021 Golden Ticket Awards for top 50 steel coasters

    @@altarush there really isn't anyway to make them safe on most rides. However they do have such seats on certain rides. It really depends on how the dynamics of the ride relate to the specific disability. One ride may accommodate a certain disability, while another ride may not a vice versa. It is really a ride by ride decision. Most parks have a pass that can be obtained, and upon obtaining that pass, they will explain the different requirements and alert as to which rides are compatible with your specific disability and which are not. For example there are some rides which cannot accommodate plastic or metal casts and braces, meanwhile many others can.

  • @lcoq19

    @lcoq19

    @@jameshorath5624 actually, it _is_ accurate. I grew up going to that very park and my sister was working there the day it happened. The man didn't fall out on a downhill descent, but rather one of the 2 curves of the coaster on which the cars are nearly entirely perpendicular to the ground. The restraint system used has always featured a lap belt along with a T-bar restraint that place pressure on the thighs of the rider. The idea being that the rider will brace themselves with their feet on the car floor and the bar on their thighs. You may be talking about a similar incident or coaster but I can assure you the accident mentioned here occurred at Dairen Lake in Darien, NY. The park was originally owned by Six Flags and the coaster was called "Superman- Ride of Steel". Then, around the recession, Six Flags sold the park to Paramount and thus lost their licensing for the Superman character (as well as the Looney Tunes whose names and costumed characters once graced the "kiddie" area for small children who could not ride most of the standard rides), and they subsequently dropped that part of the name, leaving the coaster simply called "Ride of Steel", although those of us who grew up going there still referred to it as the "Superman". Six Flags reacquired the park several years ago and it's once again called "Six Flags Darien Lake" instead of "Darien Lake Theme Park", but I'm unsure if the "Ride of Steel" was re-christened "Superman" or not, as I've not been in a few years.

    This reminds me of my childhood. My mom had six kids, so we couldn't afford to go to things like amusement parks, the movies, eating out, really anything. So instead of taking us to the amusement park, she would make me go on websites and look at horrible injuries of roller coasters gone wrong. People having limbs amputated, people dying, people weeping about their lost loved ones, anytime I wanted to do something fun she would fear monger me. I've never been on a roller coaster, and I am terrified of them. But seriously, what kind of mother shows her 8-year-old daughter that kind of graphic content?

    When my daughter was younger we went on a ride at Thorpe Park, UK. She was next to me on the magic carpet ride but she was very slender in size and although I was not big at all the difference in size meant the restraint that covered both of us was not as secure on her as on myself. When the ride began to gain speed she began to slip down on the seat and terrified, could not prevent herself from sliding. It was only my arm that ended up keeping her in the seat until the end of the ride. We have not been on the ride since although it still runs to this day.

    For the vet that lost his life on the ride, my condolences and I agree that park staff should have told him that it was unsafe, but in this day and age, unfortunately, what would be a case of trying to keep a guy safe could turn into a lawsuit of discrimination, it is a very fine line sadly, also he refused the safety brochure which stated that the rider needs two functioning legs to be able to ride due to the restraints that keep you in place, I understand sometimes its tedious to read but as we have been shown it can save your life.

    My mom and I had a similar experience with the Superman ride. In a town 30 minutes away from our home town there is a theme park. The ride we were on was called the firecracker (now renamed to the shoot off). The ride usually lifted us a few feet off the ground before shooting you up at high speed and then releasing you back down, similar to the Superman. However, as the ride lifted before the shoot off, I noticed my seat wasn’t locked, and my seat locked as soon as we took off, I got lucky, but I was terrified. As we exited the ride, I came to find out that it happened to my mom too. However, her seat did not lock at all, and she almost flew out. Terrifying experience for the both of us. The ride should have been shut down. But it’s not. The ride has at least one broken seat on all four sides and the people don’t even check if our seats are locked. It was horrifying.

    25:15 I was at thunder River rapids when the tragedy occurred in 2016. I was 14 at the time, my mum, siblings and I went to the Gold Coast for a holiday and go to all of the theme parks. We got there early in the morning and decided to go on the thunder river rapids first since it was closest to the entrance. The people who sadly died were only 2 families behind us in line, so my family and I had no idea that the tragedy had even happened until we left dreamworld at the end of the day after having a fun day on rides and seen a team of police cars and ambulances. We thought nothing of it and went back to out hotel. It was only then that we heard it on the News and we all froze in shock, I just remember thinking how lucky we were and how horrible I felt for the family.

Me and my other teenage buddies would act like idiots on this ride, things switching seats and rocking the raft like crazy, nothing ever happened. It's clear the safety of this ride was pretty good but the safety precautions were not being observed. This ride us pretty mild compared to the other rides at the park, so I can see how it lapsed. I was hurt on a transient parking lot ride as a teen, scarred literally and emotionally. I never even thought to tell my dad (he was dealing with my mother's death and raising a daughter by himself) and that operator surely carried on, hurting more kids. Years later, I knew lawyers who had a horrible time tracking down a criminally negligent carnival operator responsible for a person injured on a ride. Don't let your kids ride transient rides. SFOT is my home park and this case always upsets me due to the “eye witness accounts,” which in my opinion was the two women wanting their 2 mins on tv. Anyone who is very familiar with that ride knows that the restraints don’t click; as they are hydraulic operated. There was no dialogue between the woman saying that her restraint didn’t go down all the way, as she insisted on riding even though her body dimensions exceeded the safety specifications for that train. The ride operator in a move that is against the parks ride operator policy, “secured” the lap bar on her stomach rather than the legs as the trains were intended. When gravity took effect at the first turn, her body fat shifted and she flew out of the train which was essentially as if she wasn’t wearing one at all. Her fall ended extremely extremely gruesomely which involved one of the steel, support beams. Tragic situation and fateful decisions made by both her and the ride operator.

    New Texas Giant didn’t have a “clicking” lap bar, and the witnesses who said they didn’t hear a click, that’s why. The theory is that a portion of her stomach was under the lapbar, and as the coaster hit airtime, the portion of her stomach under the lapbar slid out, creating enough of a gap where she basically ejected out of the car.

    I rode the New Texas Giant just after it had been RMC re-tracked and - Despite the views of many others in the coaster club I've been a member of for 20+ years - I enjoyed it a lot. Certainly didn't feel unsafe on it at any point, though the story is correct; _If you can only get your restraint down one click; Tell an operator immediately, and ask to move to a „Big Boy“ seat._ 👍 I also live not far from Vortex, and it's definitely a great experience! I understand though that it's had its speed turned down a little to reduce structural stresses - Not for any safety concerns (The ride is as safe as any other which complies with UK ADIPS testing) but just to extend its operational longevity. Anybody who knows Merlin (The owners of Thorpe Park) will know that they like to get a _very_ good return on their investments! 😉

    Fun fact: When I was around 5-7 years old, my family and I went to a park and my father and I went into a roller coaster. His glasses fell off his face, I don’t know what made him believe the glasses won’t fall off if he rode a roller coaster. I started laughing a lot because of that lol

    my mom usually wears hers and they've never fallen off. if you mostly move in a straight line the g-forces just push them into your face. it's difficult to manage going to a themepark with glasses, because what are you going to do with them? you can't just not wear them unless your vision is almost perfect. you can get those chain things but it's not a guarantee it'll help.

Even tho it was smaller and slower than the biggest coaster I'd been on, I felt gripped with fear and it didn't sit right with me, so I stood and watched on the side. Two years later, it fell apart. In Australia's Luna Park, there was an accident involving the ride Ghost Train which was a popular ride for nearly 50 years before the accident. In 1979 the ride spontaneously got engulfed in flames, and seeing as it was a wooden coaster the entire ride got destroyed claiming 7 lives, 6 children and 1 adult. The ride never got reopened. Amazingly the park didnt get sued, while the people supervising the park blamed the accident on faulty wiring some people started to believe it was caused by "Arson from the ride operator"

    The story about Ride of Steel is missing a few things I think you should've included. First, the rider entered using the exit of the ride. Non-disabled riders can't enter using the exit (so he was alone and wasn't with friends). The rider was sat in the middle, not the front as you mentioned. Also, he sat down by the ride operator's or by himself. The image of the "T-bar" restraint is actually a normal lap bar. T-bar restraints are designed to hold you in by the hip, but not the shin. Finally at the time, the ride was named "Superman: Ride of Steel" but now goes as Ride of Steel because Six Flags originally sold Darien Lake. Also at the time of the accident (which unfortunately caused a death) the restraints weren't even T-bar restraints.
