CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Thelma (Geena Davis) robs a store using what J.D. taught her in order to get her and Louise (Susan Sarandon) back on their feet.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon play Thelma and Louise, two working-class friends who together have planned a weekend getaway from the men in their lives. Thelma's husband, Darryl (Chris McDonald), is an overbearing oaf, and Louise's boyfriend, Jimmy (Michael Madsen), simply will not commit. Though the road trip starts out as a good time, the pair eventually wind up at a bar. A tipsy Thelma ends up in the parking lot of the bar with a would-be rapist. Louise shoots the man dead. The two decide that they have no choice but to go on the run. They eventually meet up with a young criminal named J.D. (Brad Pitt), whose cowboy spirit rubs off on the timid Thelma. The pair is pursued by a police officer (Harvey Keitel) sympathetic toward their plight. He chases them to the Grand Canyon, where the women make a fateful decision about their lives. Directed by Ridley Scott, Thelma & Louise brought first-time screenwriter Callie Khouri many accolades including the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

The old lady scene is a symbol for confinement. Look how she is staring inside a window, craving for the outside world, for freedom. That little house is like a prison to her. She's not getting out, she's incapable of getting out, and that scares Louise to see what would happen when she lose agency of her life

Always thought so as well, plus loss of youth. That's why Louise starts putting on lipstick but then looks in the mirror, notices some wrinkles, throws the makeup away. She sees her own life in 30 years reflected in that woman's eyes... the life she'd have if she can't escape the man's world she's stuck in.

The beginning of this scene with the two old ladies is like if Thelma and Louise had lived and Louise wouldn't have shot the rapist and how sad and depressing it would have been. Like Louise was already contemplating her eventual suicide.

That's a good analysis but I took it to mean that she is sad that she knows her & thelma are never gonna get to that age. Also seeing them makes her feel ashamed bc they lived their life to get to an advanced age & here she was was an outlaw . That's why I think she puts on the lipstick to feel like she used to when she wasnt a fugitive & had crossed over from a regular working class woman to running for her life so she would not end up in prison

I think the symbolism of the old ladies looking at Louise is her own feelings of letting down an older generation, feeling like a disgrace and feeling shame. They stand for respectable society that she will never get to be a part of. It could also stand for her feeling like she and Thelma will never survive into their elderly years.

Actually, in the book Thelma and Louise and Something to Talk About, Khouri mentioned some of the deletes scenes, one was about a conversation the girls had, about their fear of getting old. So this particular scene could also represent that, Louise looking at that old lady, and maybe thinking that she just can't imagine herself at that age.. she even kinda looks like her... at least that's how I always interpreted it..

This scene is so amazing because 1. The old lady represents patriarchal confinement and Louise’s fear of being imprisoned (literally and figuratively by male oppression) 2. When the cops react to and watch the CCTV footage they’re taken aback as they (and symbolically the patriarchy) never believed women could have any power or stand up for themselves like Thelma just showed them they can. Not to mention they all use a variation of the Christian god in their exclamation, as the patriarchal society of America is deeply rooted in outdated traditions stemming from the Bible and Abrahamic faiths This movie is amazing
