    @@revivedfears There was a James and Mike Monday where James tells Mike about the time he talked to Steven Spielberg. Back in the 90s, he saw someone in a chat room or something with the screen name "Steven Spielberg", so he messaged them asking if they were the real Steven Spielberg, and they said yes. So he thinks it was really Spielberg.

    2:25 That is so relatable to me. For the longest time I would put a playlist on of the AVGN series and just slowly drift off to sleep. I went back recently and tried to reassembly that playlist from the YT channel, but even the fact that James or Screenwave or who ever has gone back and reuploaded all the videos and practically scrubbed all of Mikes title cards was such a put off that I abandoned it all together. I think I'm mourning Cinemassacre.

    I actually liked the simpler episodes. I'm fine with limited angles/production, the issue for me is the writing and delivery, it sounds forced and disconnected, which can be tolerated if the jokes are decent, and if the jokes suck, good delivery can save that, but when both are off, I watch the video like James, disconnected, I turn it on, and next thing I know it's over, and I realize I wasn't even paying attention, nothing drew me in, completely Insignificant.

    James strikes me as someone completely stuck in the past, with little interest in anything that exists outside of his nostalgia glasses. He’s out of touch with technology because he never left the past behind, for example. He doesn’t have passion for film like he used to I think partially because he doesn’t care about newer films, only to occasionally be critical of them. It’s all nostalgia for him.

    When you have quick success in something, in some cases it's almost a mistake, luck, etc. I can relate to James since I was a weird kid making rap songs in my bedroom in the 90s before it was commonplace and I happened to have some viral success in the early years of Myspace with a few songs that turned out somewhat decent. There immediately became an expectation that I would continue to release music, do shows, get a record deal, etc. While I attempted to "keep it going," it never quite matched that 1-2 year viral moment. Probably because I'm even more of an introvert than James. Socially awkward, anxiety disorder, you name it lol. 15+ years later I still get DM's & comments asking when my next album is coming, when will I "blow up", etc. and it definitely starts to wear on you. A constant reminder of what could have been. For James, AVGN was his viral moment (that lasted far longer than most) but it appears that it was meant more as a stepping stone for him to become a mainstream filmmaker which didn't pan out like he hoped. So now he must toil away on his channel doing what he can to "keep it going." For me, I got a normal office job 10 years ago so I no longer had to continue stringing fans along. I do still release stuff once in a while but purely for fun. I don't have to sit on social media pumping out content attempting to market myself since I have a steady income. I still make money from streaming but it's purely off of old fans that still listen to my old material from time to time. I suppose that's what AVGN's fans are hoping for at this point. Make your royalties from your early stuff that everyone liked and essentially retire from making half hearted content.

    I watched some old AVGN videos for the first time in a long time recently, and it made me want to visit the subreddit, which I had never done before. That led to me stumbling upon r/TheCinemassacreTruth and reading a lot of posts/comments about "muh kids" and "5:40" as well as complaints about the decline in quality in Cinemassacre content. After I brought myself up to speed on what everyone was referencing (Red Cow Arcade was helpful in this), I was kind of in disbelief to learn there is an entire community dedicated to hating a youtuber who was only really relevant over a decade ago. I get that the criticisms are directed toward the new, phoning-it-in stuff, but to me, it's like having a huge subreddit dedicated to pointing out that AC/DC's new music sucks. Like, of course it does. What more needs to be said and why the fuck are you still listening to ti? I can only guess that James has somewhat moved on past the AVGN days and just wants to make some easy money from it, and maybe some of his fans still care about it more than he does and are desperate for it to return to its glory days. It definitely sucks to see good projects fizzle out so slowly and miserably, but if your inability to accept that a series you used to love isn't good after 15 years causes you to obsessively overanalyze the creator's marriage, family matters, and friendships, you should probably ask yourself if the decline of AVGN is consequential enough to justify these unhealthy habits. The answer should definitely be "no." I know there's some kind of plagiarism issue, but at this point I can't really be bothered to go down the rabbit hole again. Plagiarism is a bigger problem, but the bulk of the complaints about James seem to be from viewers who are jealous that James gives more attention to his wife and kids than to his viewers and his creative projects.

    Nice post and I agree. Tonight is the first time I knew there were a group that actively hated James. Sure, his show is not what it was but I find it incredibly sad and toxic that adults group up and get online to trash all aspects of the guys personal life. Jesus Christ the internet can be very toxic and many of these guys need to go outside more often ..

    Avoiding unnecessary drama that won’t hurt your brand is one thing, but if your brand is in trouble and the drama imperatively needs to be addressed, then you gotta do it to save your brand. The thing with James is he avoids any and all forms of drama. Avoiding the ghostbusters 2016 drama was the right call for him, however what’s going on now with his brand is something that he needs to address.

  • @Joes_Z-Music

    @Joes_Z-Music

    @@ptrap AVGN is always at its best when it was James talking about something that was actually meaningful to him. Stuff he personally played as a kid. Mike wrote a lot of the early scripts too, and there again, you can see a that with many of the games, he had personal childhood experiences to recount, and that often made the episodes better. AVGN is more than just a history lesson, ripping apart a game, and using profanity. Those are the mechanical parts. The soul of the series at its peak was when viewers could be transported back to those days of being a kid and experiencing games that were bad without even knowing that there could be such a thing as a "bad" video game. The mechanics of an episode work best in service of that feeling, but the feeling comes across from a sense of passion. The best example of James' passion is an old review he did of the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movie "Ed Wood." The way he talks about it makes you understand the feeling he gets from watching it. It transports you there, and you almost share his passion for it even if you never actually saw the movie yourself.

    I’m saying this as a professional filmmaker myself who does far more complicated videos than James Rolfe does I have no idea what he’s up about saying he doesn’t have time to do things unless he just completely sucks at making movies… I work full-time as a film Director and producer but I’m not sitting my ass at home as I do my personal projects I’m working for television traveling creating documentaries and I’m gone most the time but I still have enough time to kick out a handful of high-quality short films a year that win awards over and over again at the festival circuit. Even when I was directing for the documentary series inside the mind of a serial killer I still had enough time to put together a feature film that I directed later in that same year. And unlike James who got to do an easy fundraiser and post something online I had to also be a salesman and secure finances by proper investors dealing with lawyers contract agreements negotiations and distribution deals for post production. I grew up watching AVGN and I never went to film school but I still surpassed his film knowledge and skills by the time that I was a 19 year old barely out of high school. Is excuses are nothing more than laziness and being crappy out working in Film there’s no way it takes that long to organize such a basic online video contact.

    Good job guys, your show is really funny. Don't forget another bizarre issue that doesn't get mentioned much, which is ScreenWave not meeting upload obligations. There was a "compression issue" with the Shrek episode, which resulted in it being several days late, plus a couple other weeks where they just flat-out missed putting up a weekly upload.

    I regret having watched this video. Your over inflated egos sure are unjustifiably judgemental. I feel like I just watched two fry cooks critique a mechanic working on a car built from scratch while they themselves have nothing even remotely close to theoretical or tangible evidence of performing the same task. Elaborating on something like internet connections for as long as you did gives quite a good view of the lack of depth you both mistakenly believe you possess. The word of the day is mediocre.

    @@xvenomtype0x Their videos about Cinemassacre are mostly just putting down facts that could improve James's channel while making fun of the slobs that "work" for him. They do a pretty good job at giving fair criticism (especially in their video about Cinemassacre's hilariously bad BTS video) while managing to make some jokes that are also made a lot in the subreddit. I think they're generally probably the most respectful people who have talked in length about the terrible state of the channel. You can only be so respectful with Cinemassacre though. That channel has quite the history.

    We act like people on reddit, shit on you only when you are wrong. People there just shit on anything. James is one of the "cleanest" content creators. People called him a thief with the movie. People shitted on him for cheetahmen. People tried to cancel him for not watching fembusters. All of these accusations and the guy stayed clean. We need more people like him. What's wrong with outsourcing to fat untalented people? That the quality went down? Ok.... soooooo... is that a crime? The guy has pointed many times that he can't just "make videos". He needs inspiration and inspiration doesn't always come to him, when he needs it. He might work on 1 episode for 5 hours but spend 20 hours thinking about it. As a content creator myself, I can confirm that this is true. You can even have a script ready but lack the motivation to edit or even record it. His latest attempt on a podcast, is him trying to find a way to fill these "20 hours" with some content. Again, you cannot understand what am I saying if you make react videos or rants but if you produce actual unique content, you will get me

    The reddit is desperate because what feeds these communities is the feeling that theyre effecting someone elses life. But James isnt even playing the game. He doesnt know the game exists. This is a guy whose show would still be sitting on a shelf on vhs tapes if his friend hadnt convinced him to upload to youtube. Hes not reachable and I dont see him becoming anymore savvy late in life.

  • @wickedlee664

    James may be a little incomprehensible but I think that speaks to the difference between a visionary and a Jonny come lately. There is obviously something genuine about the DIY aspects of James’ work. Many try to appropriate the aesthetics of DIY but James is obviously the real deal. That can often come with some obsessive and Luddite characteristics.

    you know he could just be busy with his life. I have 5 kids and would never have even close to the time to make loads of youtube content. Id suspect most complaining dont have a family and children....they are much more important than youtube. He could be like myself as well...what the fuck is a subreddit? again i dont have the time to be involved in the finer details of the internet. hell i dont even have a smart phone....no twitter, no instagram, no apps. Life is more important than the internet. Do a hard days work, put your hands in the dirt, clean your house, spend time with your family. There is more to life than giving a shit about what other people think on the internet.
