I am absolutely loving that you’re bringing some love for the basses! They deserve to have the spotlight too, and frankly that G1 sent shivers down my spine. I’m sure it was edited, but it was so damn clear, so focused, and so perfectly on pitch without a single wobble or hint of vocal fry that it deserves an award. And for those of you who don’t know, G1 is pretty much at the bottom of the bottom of a basses vocal range, and it usually comes out raspy and growled (the technical term for this is vocal fry) because most basses aren’t capable of truly producing a sustained sound at that register. What a talent!

Yes Patrick Page has a very unique vocal range, and he deploys it magnificently in Hadestown. It's also very rare to see such low bass singing - the only place I know of with a genuine tradition of bass singing is Russian choral music.

@@KajiVocals So I want to correct you, but I don’t want to sound like an ass about it. Basically, the Russian choral tradition has an entire voice type called an Oktavist, and their whole thing is that they sing super low to provide an unamplified bass sound to male choral singing. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hYaZk8asiNacj9Y.html That is a link to a wonderful performance where the bass actually sings a step lower than the bass in Hadestown. There is tons of music written specifically for this voice type, and the tradition goes back hundreds of years. The advent of modern gospel singing is based in the early 20th century at the earliest, and there is not a strong culture around bass singing in the United States. All this is not to say that Bass singing is nonexistent, or even of poor quality in the states. I just wanted to make the point that individual basses singing particularly low does not really compare with hundreds of years of traditional bass singing. www.oktavism.com/post/2014/11/16/what-is-an-oktavist This is a website dedicated to Oktavist singing, if you have any interest in the subject. Truly fascinating stuff!

5:56 The way she starts the note is like a piano, it's so resonant because of the missing vibrato at the start. It was so perfect, that if I was hearing it without actually watching, I would think that they just played a piano in that part.

For a brief period he was very famous in the UK. He starred in one of the BBC's 'search for a musical theatre star' reality shows called "Any Dream Will Do". I believe he won. He married another UK theatre/TV star (Denise Van Outen) and there was a lot of media attention. Then he just seemed to fade away from public view even though he was doing TV drama shows (not singing) and theatre. He's incredibly talented but not necessarily a name 'on people's lips'.

He won the Andrew Lloyd Webber reality competition to be Joseph in Technicolor Dreamcoat in the West End, which was the same reality show that brought us Samantha Barks and Rachel Tucker and Jessie Buckley one year later. Lee then went onto star in Wicked, Legally Blonde, Chitty Chitty Bang, Bang, and Chicago. Even if reality shows since then have been trashy, that series produced some truly incredibly talent.

range is not really that important, the most important is the song, can you sing well in pitch? that's all you need, classifications are more about roles, if you can sing well a song writen for tenors, than you're one, I even know singers who can do both baritone and tenors roles, or even bass roles, in the end of the day is up to you.

Very overrated. Zero musicality. And lack of warmth or colour in the voice. Range isn't everything.

Range doesn't mean much. The way one sings the note is far more impressive.

@@KajiVocals I get that, but think about it this way. I looked and she seems to be always classed as a soprano. Assuming the "standard" ranges for Sopranos (C4-C6), Altos (F3-F5) Tenors (C3-C5), and Basses (E2-E4): A soprano D5 (14 semitones above c4) = Alto G4 = Tenor D4 = Bass F#3. Those are all pretty easy notes for those voices to sing. By contrast, that Tenor A5 (9 semitones above C5) = Soprano A6 = Alto D6 = Bass C#5. Now I can't speak to the others personally but as a bass I can juuuust barely reach that in falsetto, but I really have to concentrate. It's actually the highest note I would be comfortable singing in public lol. The F#3 though, that is so easy I'm not even fully out of my chest voice yet. Basically yes tone obviously matters more than range alone, but it would be really really weird if a broadway star couldn't sing that note easily. All 4 of the female characters in les mis have to belt that note at least once, and that's a lyric soprano, 2 mezzos and a mezzo or alto (depending on who's playing fantine and Mme T). I'm not saying it didn't sound good, it did and she's an excellent singer. I just don't think it's in the same league as a lot of these other notes

@@andrewbloom7694 The ranges you list are halfway in head register for soprano and contralto. And all in full voice for male voices. This is an incredibly important distinction. A D5 in full voice for a soprano is not a comfortable note in most cases. It is a high belt. If you look into studies done by CVT’s Sadolin you’ll in fact find out that D5 is the limit for how high a soprano can go in an unaltered chest belt. An absolute limit. The difference between sopranos and tenors (and contraltos - as they share the passaggi in most cases) is not a whole octave. The only reason it is a whole octave in classical is due to the approach of singing. The actual difference in how these voices sit is around 5 semitones. A tenor G4 would be a soprano C5 typically. The Les Miserables roles aren’t classed by the voice type. But style. One is a high legitimate soprano (style, not voice type - however realistically I doubt a mezzo would ever play this role). And the other ones are belter roles. If we really had to be honest and try to class these belter roles as mezzo or soprano or whatever, Eponine would be a soprano belter and Fantine a mezzo belter. The reason for this is the way the middle range is approached in both roles. But both roles are still typically sung by sopranos. Sometimes even high ones. Back to my original point. A male singing an A5 in mixed voice (M2 mechanism) compared to a soprano singing a (good) D5 in a full voice would still make the D5 more impressive and challenging for a voice.
