The Zoom H4n Pro | Still Good in 2021?

Ғылым және технология

Are you thinking about purchasing the Zoom H4n Pro, but you want to know if it's still relevant in 2021? Here is my review of it after using it for a while.
Note: It is important to differentiate between the Zoom H4n Pro, and the H4n. The newer Pro version basically sounds the same as the H5 and H6. That being said, I'd say the Zoom H5 and Zoom H6 are still the better choice, due to the detachable mics, no SD card issues, and other features.

    Looking to have a set up where I can have a microphone on my exhaust and one mic on my intake..... Could you recommend any microphones that would be good for stereo sounds. My goal is to be able to record both mics and later be able to use them to edit into video from a gopro hero 8 black. Much appreciated.

    Little question, what do you suggest to record very quiet ambiance? On the video, when you're talking about this subject you're showing the zoom h6 with the MSH-6. Is this setup the good solution? What about the zoom H5 with the MSH-6, also a good solution? Thank you.

    hey skyes, i loved this review man, i have a Zoom H4n pro as well, and i mainly do interviews I noticed that this zoom picks up hiss while recording with my deity s mic 2 i was wondering, what zooms do you recommend that wont have any hiss?

  • @fuzexi
    @fuzexi3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the review! Now I know why my H4n is taking so **** long to boot up all the time! I thought it was because it is now almost 10 years old... Also, I didn't realise the hiss I'm getting is coming from the machine, so might now upgrade. Nice tip about the shockmount, I always have to hold this thing so carefully, without moving my hands, and end up with cramps after a long recording. Just one question: there seems to be an internal battery on this that dies after a long time - the timestamps keep resetting to 2008 - do you know if this is replaceable?

    Hi ! Thank you so much for this video : I'm a genuine beginner and literally just got the H4n pro, (ideally for interviews, jam sessions, and sound effects). I thought it would allow me to record all of this quiet professionally...while learning sound mastering by myself. I'd like to know : you said you'd give pieces of advice for SD cards, but I don't see any in the description : please could you give some ? Thanks ! PS : Absolutely looooove your tone ("voice" ? Thanks for pointing it out! I'll need to find the list again and include it. To be fair, any mainstream SD card should work fine, though you might want to pick a smaller size, as the boot time takes longer the bigger the SD card size is. Tone of voice, yes :D And thank you!

    Hm, it depends. How many inputs do you need, and do they all need phantom power? The H6 can provide phantom power to 4 inputs (not to the extra two that you can add with the module), but a mixer might be able to provide it to all.

    Thanks for the review! Saved me a lot of money, not exactly the device I was thought it was. Also the minute startup time when you max out to only 32G is just crazy. Sure 32GB can keep up to 30 hours of audio recording, but that's still a small card.. and why.. I mean.. the card has a file system..

  • @christianskyes

    Not sure why it does that. Formatting the SD card inside of the device does usually make things faster though, as doing that usually improves the startup time.

Maybe occasionally use it for voiceovers. Would you say that H2n would be more than enough? Or should I go for H4n? The price difference is like $20, totally insignificant. I just want it as simple and compact as possible. Thanks.

    @evanssm12 жыл бұрын

    If you think that you might want to have the option of having extra inputs, then the H5 is also worth considering- although it only has 2 XLR inputs, it's possible to add another 2, via a replacement microphone capsule (just like the H6 enables you to go from 4 to 6 XLR inputs). I think that, in any given situation most people either just stick to the built in stereo mic, or just use the XLR inputs - I'm not sure how many people use both in the same recording (except if they had no other choice). I got the H5 for my daughter, mainly because of the physical dials, which enabled easier level setting and the option to add additional XLR inputs. I was considering getting her the H6 (because at that time there wasn't much difference between the models in price). My daughter made good use of the H5. When I mentioned that I had been considering the H6 she said that she would have preferred the H5 mainly because it was much less bulky to carry around. Quite often the H4 and the H5 are also very closely priced these days (sometimes the H5 cheaper than the H4). Where there isn't much price difference then it makes sense to consider the H5 as well. I think the H4 is probably a good option if you're mostly just recording songs on your own, especially if you're plugging a guitar directly into the recorder. As I've mentioned, the physical dials for setting levels on the H5 and H6 are definitely a big plus point compared with the H4 (I think that these mics also have the ability to set separate monitoring levels for the tracks, whereas, on the H4, if you want to hear one track more clearly than the others, you have to reduce the volume of the track itself). I have an H4 that I use with an external cardioid mic. I found the built in Mic to be pretty good but it's annoying that, if you've got the Mic mounted on a tripod facing towards you you can't see the screen. I also find that, whilst you get a pretty good display of the levels in Stereo mode, when you're using Multi Track recording on the H4, the level meters are quite small. It is possible to check the levels for each track but, even then the level meter in MTR doesn't display the levels as clearly as you can see in Stereo mode.

    If you play it back, it should be audible in the left year. If you export it as a stereo .wav file, all you have to do is break the file up into two mono files in your DAW (audio editing software). If you plug in two microphones, you will hear the left one in the left ear, and the right one in the right year. Once you import it into your audio editing software, you can just break it down into two mono files, like I mentioned earlier, and thus you can separate the two inputs 👍

I have the Wired Remote for the H4n PRO but need the H4n PRO better synced with the Record/Pause of my camera as there many shots are very short 3 to 10 seconds and as many shots as 25 to 30 or more in a single flight. and can be of different aircraft. So you can see the synchronization of audio can be very time consuming if not at all impossible. Any help out there PLZ.

    You CAN record a podcast with the X/Y mics that are included, but you'll be able to hear quit a bit of reverb. This depends on the room, as if it's relatively far away from the speakers, it not only records your voice, but also the sound of your voices bouncing off the walls, etc. I'd look up some interviews recorded with the H4n Pro on KZread, just to make sure you're good with the sound 👍 In short, it's acceptable, it will record what is being said, but it won't sound as professional as using individual microphones.

    If you're recording a grand, I recommend mounting this on a boom stand (use the mic grip adaptor to put into the stand's mic clip) and aim the built-in mics towards the area where the lower and upper strings overlap. You can use either the 90- or 120-degree positions to your taste. If you're recording an upright, remove the front panel of the piano to expose the strings, mount on a boom stand have the H4n pointed towards the center of the piano, with the mics in the 120-degree position.

    Foarte interesant.

  • @christianskyes

    Just want to mention that the H4n Pro DOES work with a TRRS lavalier mic for cellphones, provided it has its own battery power. I have a lav mic that I use for video recording that has a 1/8" TRRS plug and it works fine on the Zoom. It does require a watch battery to function though (no battery required when plugged into a smartphone). The mic will record in dual mono in stereo recording mode (I have not tried it in the other modes). If you were talking about a standard passive handsfree mic for phones that has a 1/8" TRRS, then no, that does not work on the H4N Pro.

    What a beautiful and helpful video! Thank you for all the effort that went into it. May I ask two questions? I'm deciding between the h4n pro and the h5 and do not know whether the fixed position microphone on the h5 is a disadvantage vs. the mics on the h4n pro that can be adjusted out to 120 degrees. Could you say a few words about that? The priority for me is recording a single viola or violin, but I anticipate recording ensembles as well and in small halls. This is actually the second question- Is this a good device for recording a viola with the built in mic? Many thanks!

  • @christianskyes

    @christianskyes

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks, I'm glad you like it! Sure thing. The H4n pro mic is indeed adjustable, whilst the default H5 one is only set to 90 degrees. That being said, you do have the option to buy the XYH-6 capsule for the H5, which can be adjusted. As far as I know, there isn't a difference in their sound, so you can always just get the H4n Pro. For recording an instrument more up close, technically setting the mics to 90 degrees should work better, as it'll focus on a narrower field, but it's always good to experiment, as there's always a chance you might prefer it wider. In terms of recording ensembles, as well as small halls, I know it's been done before. I've never personally used it for that purpose, but there's nothing stopping you from doing it. If you want to give it a go, I'd recommend experimenting with placements before hand. In other words, grab the recorder and figure out where the sweet spot is. Move closer to the ensemble, further back, try placing the mic higher, or lower, all whilst listening through it. Once you find the sweet spot (which is literally just the position where you like the sound the most), then place it on a stand and you're done. Technically speaking, setting the mic to 120 degrees for this one should be better, but again, don't be afraid to experiment. There are few real rules for recording, it's all about whether you like the way it sounds or not. Bear in mind that the audience is also a factor, as they might make noise, move around, etc. I hope this helps :)

  • @ef2b

    @ef2b

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@christianskyes Thanks and, yes, very helpful! Given what I've learned from you, I think I'll go with the H5 because of it's ability to record a safety track 12 dB down. I think the 90 vs. 120 degrees is going to be nuance rather than good/terrible, if I understand what you said. Being new to this, I'm more likely to make a gain setting error, and that's more important than nuance of sound. For the main task: We don't have much control of the room where the audition and lessons will be. It's on the small side and has hard surfaces, so we'll likely want to be mic'd close. So the 90 degree sounds good for our most important thing. Finally, I saw that the H5 has an extension cable of about 9' that lets you put the mic capsule that far away from the H5, and that could turn into a lifesaver, although heaven knows why it costs what it does! Thanks again. Oh, hey. I just saw you have a "Is the Zoom H5 worth buying in 2020." I'll go give that a listen. :-)

    Thanks 👍 No way to do that unfortunately, as far as I know, as all recorders have a maximum file size of 2GB. This even applies to the Sony PCM-D100 iirc, which is a higher end device. I suspect it has something to do with them formatting the SD cards to something called FAT16, which would explain the 2GB file limit. In all fairness, all you have to do is import all the files into your DAW, put them end to end, and then export the final file. The new SD card would definitely allow you to store longer recordings, but they would all still be split into 2GB files.

    I have Zoom H4N PRO for over two yrs now and i am satisfied with, when i need to record loud sources like traffics,airplane , trains, live music performance , even light rain and sounds which by nature have that "hiss noise" in their sound-spectrum. But as you said, when i need to record quiet and clean ambiances at night or in distant forest in the morning or somewhere else far from device i am getting that hiss noise together with wind sounds and when i try to normalize volume it becomes to obvious and unusable . That happens when i go over 80% in mic volume, when source is quiet! For me the sweet-spot is about 60% mic volume in normal conditions but thats is not always the case! But still great recorder thou, for its price and feels good and robust ! But right now i am thinking about to upgrade to H6, but still that experience with ZOOM now scares me a little bit.... H6 have more inputs and can be used in many more creative ways and can get capsules changed, which is for me right now a excellent choice to have. It is not big investment , about 300eur , but in my country returns are little bit unacceptable, in other words once you buy something,and if you are not satisfied with to get money back is very hard job to do.... So that is a big problem. Thanks for this nice, clean and very pleasant review.... You made my choice over hundreds long videos i watched in a past year.... Best regards !

Getting the Sony PCM-D100 would be an alternative, though it's a lot pricier. Alternatively, if you need certain recordings which you can't get with the Zoom, you can always buy them from other people. If you check my video description, you should see a link to a website where I sell my libraries, and other people do as well. Hope that helps 👍

    @@christianskyes Thanks for the answer ! You are very welcome ! I have heard and maybe i am wrong i dont know, but H4N Pro and H6 have not same pre-amps. H5 and H6 they do have same and both of them are improved compared to older versions , just because of this thing i am talking about . Just for the practical example, when i need to record something like i was this morning, an ambiance in my backyard with birds singing from the forest 50 meters far from me at mic volume 80%, i have imported that file in Izotope RX there was a lot hiss present, which is very hard to get rid of and maintain quality at the same time. And that is the preamp problem for sure, and everything i need to record over 60% in volume i know in advance that i will have a lot of work in post and it is noticeable in my headphones during the recording. Wave spectrum was too low for that mic setting and when i boosted volume in post for about +10dB , it was terrible ! Maybe the scenario was not perfect, maybe my setup was wrong from the very beginning , but the fact is that H4N PRO have that noise issue for sure. Even thou for its price still is good for some common and proper loudness conditions, and can be used in professional environment but for quiet field recording now after listening to your review i have confirmed that ... I have not believed utill now because i was emotional bounded with this device, because it is a very first field recorder i have ever bought and i wanted it forever and maybe that was making me not so objective.... @@TimandLauren Unfortunately I didn't make a change... But I am planning to get Zoom H6, because of so many good reviews and yet price... Apparently Zoom H4N Series have the most problems with hiss and preamps which I didn't now I that moment when I was about to buy... I have made greatest mistake in that moment because I was looking for H4N vs. H4N Pro reviews, instead to look for full product review... About H4N Pro, I have recorded my vocals thru studio mic couple of times and result was decent in richness of sound but hiss was still there... Still I am not using H4N for that purpose but for direct handheld recording in outdoors... So If you are planing to record outdoors sounds, you should get H6N... If you are going to record a from a loud sounsources H4N Pro is OK but still... My advice is that you should save little more money and get the real deal the H6, because it have more inputs, a better cleaner preamps and plus you can change capsules which is cool feature... Nowadays in my country is H6 is about 300 euros, and that is about 50-80 euros higher price than H4N PRO... Which is not a lot comparing to work you need to do repairing\cleaning sound from Zoom H4N.. For me that is the biggest deal... P. S. I just watched the other day a video, but I don't remember so well, but I think there was review about Shotgun MIC like RODE with H4N, it is the most worst combination to have... I hope I remember good but that have a lot of sense because like I said all depends on preamps.... So low budget Shotgun mic and H4N Pro have no sense at all (for high quality recordings) ...

    hello, this is the first video from you I watched, and reading all the comments before even starting was raising expectations. I am glad for you that you have so many kind comments. Many are about the feeling you transmit, like the asmr vibe. To enhance that experience I would recommend using a popfilter. From the beginning I was surprised by the amount of plosives in the voice. It was distracting, but I might be the only one. A popfilter can be user very close to the mic so you can still have a bit of proximity effect to give your voice depth. Hopefully it is worth testing. Cheers

    How do the H4n pre-amps compare to the H6?

    From what I've seen recently, they seem to be basically the same. This is in regards to the H4n Pro, not the really older version.

    @@christianskyes thank you for the prompt response. I'm keen on buying a Zoom device, but the microphones I have are non XLR, so would need a converter.
