The Zoom F3 and Your iPhone - Perfect Together!

The question - Can the Zoom F3 Field Recorder connect directly into the iPhone? The answer - YES! But the journey to get there was not straightforward.
Drew takes you through the theory of making this oddly tricky connection and demonstrates what did not work as well as what finally did.

Hi there. You actually can adjust the line out level. You shouldn’t really need to, but if you want to be on the safe side, you could -6 ir -12db you can also get attenuating cables to increase or decrease the signal. On connecting to the headphone port, the principal reason I wouldn’t do this is not that the signal is hot, but the preamble of Acacian in the headphone socket is vastly inferior to the recorded audio and the line out. Thank you for the video and very much appreciated

What about a TRS to TRRS cable? Of course you'd lose stereo since the phone's 3.5mm input is mono...

I think your F3 videos are excellent 👍 Any chance of making a quick one on how to use it with two XLR mikes? I’m having difficulties working out how to access the files from these dual recordings in post and getting confused on whether to select mono or stereo. Many thanks 🙏

that’s it! Line out is the way out, the one on the left is DC5V used to charge F3 externally, isn’t it?

Correct! The USB-C compatible input can be used to power it as well as to interface with other electronics. I had trouble connecting the F3 to my iPhone with this input because my connectors were not MFI compatible (see video on the topic): kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKN1rK6eiKjcnKw.html The line out is a solid option that will always work, as long as it is properly connected to the phone with the proper cable(s)/adapter(s).

Have you tried the camera connect dongle? It works running my mackie to my iPad for GarageBand.

Have you tried using an iphone to camera adapter (from Apple)? Interested to hear if it will work via usb with proper camera adapter.

I have not tried it specifically with the Apple camera adapter, but I did make it work going from the USB-C to USB-A to Lightning. Let me know if this video answers this question or if I need to try something else (and record it)! kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKN1rK6eiKjcnKw.html

I’m curious how it performs as audio interface for life streaming session. How should the gain adjusted?

  • @thepodcastingstore

I haven't tried it for livestreaming yet, but based on what I've been trying out you'd need to set your levels in the program you're using, since the F3 does not have any gain controls. As long as your software can handle 32-bit float, you could fix any gain issues in post, if the livestream does not go smoothly.

Cool video, not a bad idea. I think we can solve the usb problem though. It looks like rode makes a special cord to hook up to the USB c side( rode sc15), or you can hook up a Apple camera adapter with the rode USB A cable it came with. Here is a video that I found explaining this. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nmp2upqRh9TAnso.html I hope that helps.

There was no need to have the kid scream and blow my ear drums. You could have normalised the volume and still achieved your demonstration. I nearly crashed my car trying to turn the sound down quickly.
