Recording in Stereo With the Zoom F3

Drew takes a request!
A viewer asked for a demonstration of the stereo recording capabilities of the Zoom F3, so Drew explores the functional differences between recording in stereo versus recording in two-channel mono. He also demonstrates setting up stereo recording to the internal SD card, exporting the file(s) to your computer, and using 32-bit float to your advantage when the recording volume is not what you expected.

When I’m monitoring the recorder with headphones, why is sound only coming out of one headphone, but when I press the settings for this channel it plays in stereo?

Really great information, really clears things up. Just wondering about phase issues while recording to stereo.

Great question! Phasing issues should not happen unless you're mixing the two channels down to mono. Make sure to pan your channels left and right, respectively, and keep it as stereo and this is easy to avoid.

Thank you! The outdoor recording was a bit of a challenge, but we went into it knowing it was the concepts that were important, not the purity of the sound we captured.

Can you record two stereo channels with two xlr inputs in same time? or you can record stereo with one xld input ?

Yes, with a caveat. XLR cables are made to transmit a balanced signal that has a minimum of noise and interreference. Since there are three wires in an XLR cable (and one is the ground) the remaining two can be made to each carry a separate signal. You would need a splitter to accomplish this and the sound quality would possibly be compromised, but it is possible. Check out this great article for an in depth explanation of this: geekmusician.com/are-xlr-cables-mono-or-stereo/ From a practical standpoint, I recommend using the F3 in stereo mode and recording two separate mono signals, one in each channel. If you're needing more than two channels, a more robust recorder (like the H6 or H8) may be a better option than the F3. Good luck!

@@thepodcastingstore thank you for the answer, I'm new in 32 bit float, you can record 32 bit float from sound mixer board, from a music band for example? With the benefits of 32 bit float range? Or you când only record 32 bit float with maximum range from a external microfon? Thank you again

@@lifeframes Thanks for the questions! The best way to think about these concepts is in terms of inputs and outputs. The F3 has two XLR inputs, so it can record any source (whether it is a microphone, keyboard, mixer, etc) as long as it is compatible with XLR and will do so in 32-bit float. A caution on the F3 - if you're using it to record a non-microphone, be certain to set the mic input source to "line" instead of "mic". Not doing so will likely overload the F3 and compromise the quality of sound!

Is it suitable for telling stories and tales? I want to have it for recording sound only, knowing that I use dynamic microphones

100%! This will work with any XLR microphone
