The performance of this song is a perfect example of synergy. Each instrument, the vocals, and the lyrics all meld together into a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. This song along with Baker St and songs from Boz Scaggs, Pink Floyd, Stones and others was what made of that time period parallel to disco music, and flowed into the 80s, it sure was a spoil for choice back then. Makes me always think how we moved away from that kind of middle of the road music.

I had the privilege of growing through my teen years in the 1970's . Am I biased ? I feel like we had the best music then, and it makes me feel sorry for the young people today. Your mention of Baker Street really caught my eye. I'm a few years older than you but I was raised by my very restrictive grandparents. Less sheltered, more like a captive so it took me a few years to fully get me feet under me after graduating HS in '72. So, to a degree we were in the same place in the 70s. A few of my favorites, of course the Beatles (truly a one of one), Billy Joel, Three Dog Night, Bad Company, Rod Stewart, Glen Campbell, Linda Ronstadt among the many. Conversely, I'm or at least was, more of an 80s guy as far as music and pop culture goes. However, this is about 2 songs that I closely associate. Year of the Cat and Baker Street. I've always associated those to songs very closely although there is no absolutely objective reason for doing so. Thus, you could say that it is my own visceral response which is correct. Superficially, they are similar in that they were both recorded by Scottish artists, both "one hit wonders" and both rose to No. 8 on Billboard. I won't delve into the artistry other than to say both songs are uniquely rich, original have meaningful lyrics that speak of love but neither are conventional love songs. They both convey a wistful melancholy that reaches into the soul. Two great, great songs that are probably underappreciated.

LYRICS On a morning from a Bogart movie In a country where they turn back time You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre Contemplating a crime She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running Like a watercolor in the rain Don't bother asking for explanations She'll just tell you that she came In the year of the cat She doesn't give you time for questions As she locks up your arm in hers And you follow 'till your sense of which direction Completely disappears By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls There's a hidden door she leads you to These days, she says, I feel my life Just like a river running through The year of the cat While she looks at you so cooly And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea She comes in incense and patchouli So you take her, to find what's waiting inside The year of the cat Well morning comes and you're still with her And the bus and the tourists are gone And you've thrown away your choice you've lost your ticket So you have to stay on But the drum-beat strains of the night remain In the rhythm of the newborn day You know sometime you're bound to leave her But for now you're going to stay In the year of the cat

When I was a teenager, I found this record in a 99 cent bin at a music store. I didn’t even have a record player, but I just saw it and had to buy it. It ended up getting accidentally destroyed, but I fell in love with the song after looking it up online. Over a decade later I went to the same music store, and found this record AGAIN in the 99 cent bin. Of course I had to buy it. I finally just acquired a record player. I’m going to see if the record is in good enough condition to finally hear it as I originally discovered it.

Just an absolute timeless classic. So many instruments all blending together in complete synchronization to produce such great music. Today's musical talent should all watch how real music is made. And way back from 1976 I might add. The music back then is so much better than today.
I had the privilege of growing through my teen years in the 1970's . Am I biased ? I feel like we had the best music then, and it makes me feel sorry for the young people today. Baker Street, Just The Way You Are, by Billy Joel. All the great Elton John, Billy Joel, Al Stewart, Gary Wright, Seals and Crofts, America, The Eagles. That music still makes me feel young. Still get the same gut feeling from it.

This is one of the greatest songs ever written. That is not mere hyperbole. It is a fact. The lyrics are not only one of the greatest lyric poems ever written, but the music complements it perfectly. It is a song that transports you to another place and another time. Everything seems strange and beautiful at the same time. It is a place you don't want to leave, and a place your mind and spirit return to again and again for a restorative drink in its waters. Thank you so much, Al, for this timeless masterpiece. Agreed - the lyrics are just so dense with mood-evoking and visual imagery, every line so clever you just can't help smiling and appreciating the lyrical genius. A short-form compressed romantic story set to 4 1/2 minutes of unforgettable music. And as you said, just such a rolling, hook-filled melody, it's a perfect match for the incredible lyrics. The music today doesn't even come close to what we all enjoyed back in the day! I'm so glad I was around when the Year of the Cat came out. So much talent! All the lyrics have a meaning! Something we can all relate to! Awsome!!!!🙂
Let me get this straight: People playing instruments, singing, grooving out? Sign me up! I am a 60's baby ❤️

The first song I learned to play on the piano. 45 years later and I'm still playing it. It is timeless, just like Time Passages. Al is a Magnificent musician!

But, did you know that the fellow playing the piano for Al in this performance was none other than the guitarist, Peter White? He handled keys and eventually guitar for Al, but here, I'm almost certain that was him at the piano. He is one of the most well known smooth jazz artists on classical or nylon string guitar in the world. Check him out.

@@dennylibertario2246 Hey Denny! I think Peter White is actually playing the electronic keyboards in this video/version - but you're right he's a fantastic musician. I think the piano player here is Peter Wood.

Había tanta y tan maravillosa música en el final de los 70's y principios de los 80's que, grandes temas no tienen en la actualidad tanta difusión, como este.
So lovely, I can feel the passion in the instruments played, especially the Saxophone. 🎤🎸🎹♥️🎹♥️
This is a beautiful live performance.

Everything is so clean and precise. Great song that was perfectly arranged and produced. Great musicians making great music is something that is sorely missed today!!!
This song always had lots of atmosphere, but this sublime performance enhances it.
The piano sounds like raindrops.

Simply BEAUTIFUL......
Still love this song after all these years.
Old Grey Whistle Test sorted the wheat from the chaff. This was totally live - and had to be done in ONE take. No opportunity to busk or cover for error. That's why music like this endures... These musicians knew what they were doing, and did it to perfection.
Such a great song that makes you feel free with no worries. I’m 58 and I still listen to this and it takes me to my happy place.
She comes out of the sun and a silk dress swirling like a watercolor in the rain......best mixed metaphor in all rock history,
I was coming home from my third date with my high school girlfriend and things had worked out grand. On a long stretch of empty road I turned on the radio and this came on. That moment is frozen in memory till I die.
