-The Year Disney Imploded-
The end of 2023 wasn’t kind to Disney. Financially, the company had one its worst years in memory. After a decade of dominance, the box office totals of The Marvels and Wish said it loud and clear: their movies and television arm are a mess.
-Time Stamps-

    The quote from the bearded Rick Rubin guy caught my attention because one thing an OG told me when I was working at the (unnamed animation studio bombing on sequels right now) cafe is, "Back in the day, we used to make movies for each other." He then explained to me that the concept of a "muse" is simply "Someone you make something for". By definition, films made by committee do not possess the capacity to be "for" anyone.

    It's not the first time Disney has declined. They go through these phases every so often. Actual failing, like going out of business, isn't happening. Marvel's finally starting to try to course correct. Star Wars might eventually if they ever get Kathleen Kennedy out of there.

    If you want a real gauge of how bad Disney is doing, look no further than the Dollar Stores like Dollar Tree or Dollar General. I work at a Dollar General and we have a bunch of Disney/Marvel/Star Wars related items in our store like toys, party supplies, and even connectable cards. All for cheap. And we can't move any of it. Sure the occasional Diaper pack with Mickey's face on it will sell but that's a necessity rather than an indulgence. We can't get ANY of our Disney related stuff to move at all. If Disney can't even get cheap ass $1-5 toys to sell, do you think anyone would be willing to buy even more expensive items?

    It's depressing to realize that in the next 10 year movie theaters will probably not exist, the issue with Disney and Fox is they spent so many years creating such a bubble within their work space that at this point I severely doubt that there's anyone their who can write a story without trying to preach some message that has nothing to do with the action. They're so disconnected from reality it's like I am watching a parody of a movie.

  • @slvr236

    @slvr236

    Theaters are not going away, for sure. We were already seeing a down trend in movie-goers but I think that is due to the explosion of engaging content in different media. What is happening is that these Production houses are losing money left&right due to their misplaced sense of righteousness and "duty to society" and it has created an artistic vacuum. Its being filled by other media already and now, slowly but surely by the Global cinema. Looking at Netflix's content, for eg, there's very good, compelling "foreign" content to watch. Either Disney learns and does a course-correction or piece-by-piece loses its charm until it becomes just a token of Nostalgia. In hindsight.. movies like Wall-E, Ratatouille (while appreciated in their time) feel super underrated now, seeing the fresh crop of animated crap we are getting. I think Coco was the last Disney Pixar movie that I enjoyed.

    It truly is spectacular to realize that Disney struck out way more times than won last year in the theaters, to the point that the most fun you could have with Disney movies was tracking their trajectory right into the bomb zone. Particularly satisfying was seeing that The Marvels stopped reporting its box office earnings after less than a month, and that it was discovered that 65% was men who saw it, despite what a lot of people in the media claimed otherwise. When you had Godzilla Minus One expanding its theatrical reach while Disney was contracting, it felt real good for genuine storytelling.

  • @Shineinpoverty

    There is no surprise there. They try to hire diverse untalented people, then someone with a bit more experience has to fix the writing. They also hire actors from minorities, and ask yourself, have you ever noticed that they are often not very good? Passion and experience was replaced by quotes and the message. If they could make their movies just a bit worse in return of meeting DEI quotas, they would. The problem is that once they introduce those things the movie gets much much worse no matter how hard they try to go around the obstacles they created themselves

    What I loved reading was that Disney had made up its total expenditure for Star Wars (4.05 Billion) in just the sequels. That fool had no idea how Hollyweird accounting works...☺ They need to get the director of Rey to do a movie with Jennifer Lawrence. It would be the first first and possibly first movie ever with a women in the lead and a no time director taking the reins. Seriously groundbreaking stuff.

    Even if something broke even, it might still diminish brand value. Success would be breaking even, adding gloss to the brand that they can use in theme parks or toy sales, and setting up whatever they do next. If you're losing ground, you'll also giving other companies time to outmode you. If something comes along that leaves the superhero genre in the dust, then it would take Disney probably years to adjust.

    Your video is ten times better than anything Disney has done in almost two years. I’m glad I didn’t see the last Dr. Strange film. Him being relegated to secondary or third protagonist is ridiculous. It’s his movie and he’s a supporting character. I think Deadpool 3 will be Reynolds’s last one. No more Wolverine, Deadpool or Dr. Strange movies which is a bummer. My favorite characters slowly fading away. Them trying to get Johansson and RDJ back shows how desperate they are. How can they lose billions and still do the same thing over and over again? It’s like those horrible gamblers that think they’ll win if they just keep playing. It’s insanity and it’s all their own doing. You can’t save those who don’t want to be saved sort of thing. Again great video dude and you got another sub

    The problem with "inclusion" is that most of the time it's simply used as a cover for cheap and bad products. They somehow convinced themselves that if they just had a minority in the lead, people would flock to it and spend money on it regardless of quality. And because of that idea, not only are the products shit, but the "inclusion" is shit as well. It ends up being more offensive to the groups "represented", either because they are bland and boring characters, or just straight up ofensive. They make the one diversity checkmark the entire character and it ends up being a nightmare. If you want an example of good inclusion in media, you can look at shows like Castlevania, The Legend of Vox Machina, or even smaller Disney shows like The Owl House. The inclusion here doesn't feel forced because their "diversity traits" are treated as simply one aspect of the characters and story, and not the whole character or story.

    So basically what you are saying is. Listen to the fans.....why a business like Disney didn't baffles me to no end. I am a comic book guy, always have been and they butched every character since endgame.....decades of amazing stories in their back pocket and dei ruined them all. I fear we have gone back to the crappy comic movies of the 90s and early 2000s and worse....I fear it will never get back to good stories. Show don't tell and character development mean nothing to them. When you turn on your fans and say we are the issue and toxic, racist, bigoted etc what did they expect to happen. We made them what they are.....it's entertainment not politics. Everyone hated being preached at and then told we are awful humans for not supporting shitty movies. What did they expect? As you said we all saw this coming a mile away.....I don't think they can recover to pre endgame fanfair because they pointed the finger at us the comic fan and said we were the issue not the crappy writing, characters and dei infused schlock. I always say I don't care what sex, gender, race or religion the characters are just write them well, well written stories without the bullshit. That's what they need to do. But as you said to little to late now. They hurt their themselves too much to recover in my opinion. I haven't watched any of the modern mavel stuff....none of it. And I know fans who are die hard comic nerds who refuse to even try with them. They didn't just shoot themselves in the foot they sat on a nuke and blew themselves up. No one to blame but themselves. Activism isn't the answer, dei isn't the answer ....good, quality story telling without 15 writers is the answer. The sag strike is just going to make it worse as they are mandating 6 writers per film/tv show ....so what happens to those people who are passionate and write an amazing script to only have it butched by the 5 idiots who want to make a name for themselves....you end up with films and tv like we have. It's a real shame....a massive misstep that they will never recover from without a huge shake up....going against the Hollywood norms of now and I don't know how they will do that.

    As someone in PR/Marketing, I really don't GET this DEI... insistence. Like, HOW it's done, not the concept. Because I'm sure the people in power in Disney are aware of other IP with technically DEI content that works. Two of them even have Sigourney Weaver on them and MADE MONEY in the 1980s or 1990s - you know, those benighted times because no one was "Woke" yet - and remain cultural icons to this day. So I don't know what NUMBERS the pushers of this agenda told or continue to tell both Blackrock and Disney board members to justify the continued push. Do they honestly believe the hooha that the core of these franchises hate the "new direction" because we're bigots and misogynists? I get it when some White Knight or "activist" gets behind the push, but corporate leaders are supposed to be NUMBERS people. If you're a corp boss and the important numbers are down, you should want to see the numbers tanking those numbers. Why are we not getting the numbers we want? And you're telling me Disney boardies believe it when some "activist" marketing guy tells them "coz neckbeards" as the reason? It doesn't make sense, at least how I, as someone who was the PR/Marketing guy for a once-big corporation here in the Philippines, understand industries. I have an idea, given I was in political PR before I decamped to the "private sector", but I don't have the info to prove that speculation AND it still doesn't make sense because Disney isn't just Blackrock.
