Hey, man. I just bought The Home Child thanks to this Vid. My paternal great grandmother was a Home Child, so naturally I was interested in the topic. Never would have heard of it without you. Thanks Eric!

I swear, Eric: You must inhale these books, and you read so many good things so there must be clunkers too. That's just wild, man. Keep up the good work!

I'm not much of a poetry reader but all of those books sound so intriguing... I feel in imminent peril of an online order. Thunderclap has me intrigued too.

Sounds like an exciting list. For some reason I couldn't get into "The Fraud" earlier when I tried it out, but your description of it has me wanting to check it out again and be more patient with it. I've had a terrible year so far for reading! lol so this list is deffo something I'll explore. I loved The Bee Sting when I read it last year, but I haven't read any of the others!

I've recently finished reading The Wren, The Wren, such a beautiful and inventive novel, I loved how the prose was interspersed with the poetry also. I haven't read anything before by Anne Enright, and look forward to reading more of her work. I really loved The Bee Sting, and looking forward to reading The Fraud, and many others on this list- thanks Eric!

That's great! I've enjoyed every book I've read by Enright but I think my favourite is The Forgotten Waltz so I'd definitely recommend that. Hope you enjoy The Fraud as well.

I have read all the fiction and have to say The Bee Sting would be my number 1 pick. I really enjoyed The Wren, the wren, wonderful characters, laughed out loud a few times! Unfortunately unlike some others I did not enjoy The Fraud by Zadie Smith. I have read 3-4 other of her books and was looking forward to this one but struggled to finish. I think some of the British slang and the lack of punctuation at times had me confused about what was happening. Not my cup of tea. I have not read any of the non fiction or poetry but look forward to checking them out.

I have the fiction titles in my TBR but I look forward to checking out the non fiction. I’ll see how approachable the poetry is. Haven’t read enough to pick a winner , so I’ll go along with you

A very solid group of finalists. I’ve read the fiction and nonfiction shortlists but not the poetry. I found Thunderclap to be an unexpectedly powerful and moving book that opened up Dutch art to me in a meaningful way while still being very much a book about grief and loss.

Really enjoyed 'The Wren The Wren' & the fascinating story told in 'The Fraud'. Wasn't going to read 'The Bee Sting' for its length, but your reviews are edging me towards it 😊 Interested to read 'Doppleganger - Klein is such a good writer & ‘Self-Portrait as Othello’ - have read a previous collection of Allan-Paisant's How to choose an overall winner?

It’s funny because Neil Gaiman is a bit hit or miss for me, but American Gods is definitely my favourite of his books that I’ve read up to now. I intend to read the follow-up Anansi Boys soon. 📚

I am interested in Thunderclap by the single reason that I work in Delft and have lived here for a few years as well. It is always fun to read a book where you have a personal link to. Doppleganger is in my list for a long long time as well, and I am always curious about Zadie Smith even if I have not always liked her books

Those sound great! Thanks for the recommendations. Have you read poet Mark Doty's non-fiction book, What Is the Grass? Walt Whitman in my Life? If not, PLEASE make time to read it. I'm dying to know what you think. Soooo good. And the prose is gorgeous.

Its both a close up look at Walt Whitman (the man and the poetry) but also a tight memoir of Doty's own journey of self-discovery and acceptance. Remarkably good. Five stars.

Thanks for doing the legwork and sharing with us. I haven't been attracted to The Wren, The Wren, but the part about the father sounds interesting. I have a friend whose father was a famous sport hero and she said it was quite the experience to grow up with someone everyone admires and yet they're often a totally different person in private. I did read Pet by Catherine Chidgey and while it's not some lifechaning book, I do recommend it for the sheer pleasure of how well the writer captured the voice of a 12 year old girl. Great list. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, that interplay between the public and private figure is so interesting. And I've been meaning to get to Chidgey's book.

@@EricKarlAnderson I am definitely thinking of buying Bright Fear b/c if you. I haven't read poetry since Plath at uni, but I did start to read Rumi and Rupi Kaur and loved it all over again. Home Child also sounds awesome.
