The problem with The Force Awakens was that while it did provide some stunning visual effects work, it wasn't breaking the ground like Ex Machina had with utilizing a $15 million budget & none of the Star Wars films had won a competitive Oscar since The Empire Strikes Back. And fun fact: Ex Machina is the only other film to have a Screenplay nod outside of The Martian.

If Force Awakens wasn't groundbreaking, why did it win the top prize at VES and won the most awards at VES, meanwhile Ex Machina was nominated for nothing at VES? Even the visual effects people themselves voted The Force Awakens as the best visual effects of that year. Ex Machina wasn't as groundbreaking as The Force Awakens, its effects were just really good. The Force Awakens was blending so many different effects like CGI, animatronics, new lightsaber technology, set extensions, and so much more to such a perfect degree. Ex Machina won because the category was crowded with the vfx sweeper and three Best Picture nominees, so the votes likely ended up splitting between all the contenders so much to where Ex Machina squeezed through.

@@TheHannahcast Because the VFX artists at the VES saw it as the most groundbreaking work of the year. I was just referring to the Oscars themselves, which as you said are voted by everyone & not just VFX branch, skipping over TFA.

But that's what I'm saying. The vast majority of the Oscar voters don't know anything about visual effects, so they really pick their favorite movies in the category. Again, I must bring this up, but this time for Ex Machina: If Ex Machina was a terrible movie and no one liked it, that wouldn't necessarily stop the vfx branch from nominating it, but the general Oscar voters would never choose it to win Visual Effects.

This is however probably the best breakdown of visual effects I have seen in a while.

Here is the thing. Re Godzilla Minus One and Ex Machina Visuals should elevate the film but you need a decent film to start. The Creator was a nothing burger of a movie as was Star Wars so they were beaten out by much better films. Really the fault is with the writers and directors of the nothingness film, not the fault of the voters

No, it is the fault of voters. It's "Best Visual Effects", not "Best Movie with Visual Effects". If you can't separate whether you liked or disliked a movie from a specific craft in the film that was done very well, then you don't respect the integrity of awards.

He really can't get over failing to predict something so obvious lmao. It was so satisfying watching him cry as the world celebrated Godzilla winning an Oscar as it should.
