Reading comprehension titan strikes again

The problem isn't Eren crying but WHY is he crying. He killed billions and became the reason for his mother's death and chooses to cry over Mikasa. Some of my favourite moments in AOT were Eren crying (131 in particular) but making him, as Armin calls it, "pathethic" was such an odd writing choice.

The problem I think here was isayama putting in eremika romance at the last second. We rarely saw any development between the two and the story kept confusing us if they were in love or just like family. Also this wasn't the worst panel for me, it was when Armin thanked Eren for becoming a mass murderer. It sounded so out of character that I legit thought it sounded like something out of an abridged parody dub.

This is the reality that no one wants to accept..... Eren never changed, he was still that kidnwe saw in season one who always let his emotions flow without thinking of its consequences..... The only change this time is that eren knews the future so he knew what was coming so the bestmhe could have done was to distant himself from his friends...... But he doesn't know whzt is going to hapen after his death.... and reality is the millions of life never mattered for eren after knowing the truth beyond the walls..... he always kept all of his emotions upto himself bcoz he knew the future and had to act according to the seen memory to reach the rumbling.... Armin is eren's closest friend and before dying he wanted to confess all of his feelings and emotions with armin so this time instead of hiding his emotions he let them flow in the most pathetic manner which was the character trait of season 1,2,3 eren ..... when you know that this is your last conversation with your closest one then even if it is apocalypse going on, the world may be on fire but nothing matters to you coz you are with your closed ones and having last conversation with them.. all you want will be to share everything, every single feeling, you have hidden from them and that is what eren did in that panel.. The feeling behind this scene or panel was right.... but the execution was missing..... it could have been handles in a different way which may not have created the controversy..... May be the anime fixes it

There is actually something that tells they potentially could have been in a relationship : the tattoo reveal of Mikasa in the Anime. Eren knew that she had it, and when someone asked Eren how he knew she had it, it felt like an awkward moment.

I don’t think the concept is bad I just think the writing could have been a little less harsh. Like I get that you’re supposed to dislike him at the end, but I think this scene makes people dislike him for the wrong reasons. I think a better emotional meltdown for this older version of Eren would be more emotion in the face, but less dialogue. I get that Eren IS a very childish person at his core, but what he says in this scene doesn’t really sound like something he’d ever say. I do think the romantic part of the ending was tacked on last minute to quickly confirm that this was a thing. When in reality this was never meant to be a thing and was only added on last minute because of shippers in the fanbase. I do hope they change this scene in the anime or at least change the dialogue so it’s less embarrassing for the wrong reasons. But even if they don’t that doesn’t mean you should hate the entire series because of it. Like I still love GoT even though the last season is absolutely dogshit and MUCH worse than AoTs ending ever was.

The ending was pretty good thematically, what isayama tried to do was amazing, however i think because he was under such immense pressure he sadly butchered the dialouge at the end. It was so confusing. If they change the dialouge a bit, i think the ending would actually be a 9/10 easily, so fingers crossed

I know the romance between Mikasa and Eren is underdeveloped, but it was underdeveloped because it was never about the romance for Eren. I feel people give Eren more shit for his scene than he deserved because they think he acted like a teenager afraid to admit his feeling to her but was fast enough to cry them to Armin. But that was never really the case. What he said to Armin was just a moment of weakness, he never meant it, he said immediately afterward "I want her to be happy". He also told her to forget about him. As for the reason he never told Mikasa about his feelings, it's because of exactly this. He wanted her to move on and forget him. Eren always knew Mikasa loved him. So when you say "when she rejected him". Did she? Her answer didn't change how she felt or what Eren thought she felt. It was more of a question if she wanted to act on that love, she said no, so Eren went with "no" as well when he told Zeke he only had 4 years to live and she should forget him after his death. The question wasn't him trying to admit his feeling to her. The question he asked her was more about what she wanted. Because for Eren, the rumbling wasn't just to save Mikasa. He wanted to save Armin and all his friends as well. I feel like he wanted her answer to be "yes" because he wanted someone to stop him, but he also wanted it to be "no" because he wanted to go on with it. People really like to simplify how he felt.

its basically a “the cycle continues” ending. i think one of the main themes of the story is violence brings on more violence, so because of erens actions the violence and hatred will keep going. wether its setting up a sequel or not is something else but that was my interpretation of it

Video idea: what would happen if a soon-to-be shifter was injected with the spinal fluid of the other nine titans? Think like how Falco was injected with zeke’s spinal fluid, and gained the ability to fly. For attack titan, I think the side effect would either be memory inheritance or heightened physique. Female titan, maybe the new shifter would gain… feminine qualities, and maybe adaptability traits. Armored titan, maybe armor or hardening abilities. Colossal titan, maybe size, like 16-20 meters. Jaw titan = powerful jaw. Cart = endurance. Warhammer = armor skin. Beast titan we already know. And founding titan would probably be just zeke’s abilities

I love this channel.

People seem to think Chad Eren works better as a facade rather than a character progression, but in reality that goes against every rule of good writing. This “facade” we see from Eren in season 4 onwards is just character progression and it shouldn’t have been treated as anything else, but because Isayama *did* treat it like a facade, we got a character regression from Eren instead of a character progression. If you still want Eren to be vulnerable and show emotions, you can still have him break down and start crying over something more reasonable than not being able to bust in his Asian step sister. The difference between Eren’s breakdown in paths and his breakdowns before that was that all of his previous breakdowns were *actually* understandable and in line with his character. He “dies” and realizes all of his years of training were for nothing as he’s rotting inside a titans stomach His mom dies brutally right in front of him at the age of 9 He’s looking a child who he knows he’s going to kill straight in the eyes and telling him how sorry he is All of these are grounded and in line with the themes of AoT. I think all of the above are far better reasons to have Eren break down compared to crying over Mikasa.

Agreed. If they had him break down crying over what he has done, the fact that he nearly killed his friends and killed billions of people and can't even guarantee their safety past several decades. Seeing him regret his actions like that would have been far in line with his character theme, "going as far as possible for freedom". It would've been an interesting open discussion for the ending, the question of whether freedom is worth it at all costs Instead we got something that completely breaks the immersion even if it can be argued that it makes sense. But just because it makes sense doesn't mean it's good writing

They are adopted Sister and Brother and I hate how eren had much more chemistry with Armin but still ended up with Mankasa because "a woman and a man obviously have to be together!1!1!1!". The only scene between them that is even remotely romantic is the kiss in Season Two and even then eren stopped her. Eren always ignored and even cussed at her when she approached him, it's obviously not a healthy relationship and they should not be together.

Thank you for actually explaining the criticisms behind why people dont like the crying Eren in 139. It was insanely out of place and the tone didnt match the point in the story at all. So many people are quick to dismiss criticism against the manga ending cause their precious AoT is a masterpiece with no flaws. But I disagree and although I love the show, it has its flaws

its a great moment tbh, sure the dialogue couldve prolly been better but overall it does a lot more good than bad. also isayama saying mikasa's presence was more like a mother to him is taken out of context, he was referring to a specific panel from an early chapter where eren told mikasa to stop acting like shes his mother, so its more about how mikasa was presenting herself rather than what eren wants her to be, and i think the scene from the s2 finale + what am i to you were enough to show eren had romantic feelings for mikasa but like you said he was always too busy with all the fighting stuff

Remember when every other time he cried and went on rants was him breaking down at the sight of his loved ones dying horribly and coping with the fact he was powerless to do anything until accepting he was worthless and wanting to die so he wouldn’t have to see it anymore till he completely broke inside and became a remorseless monster that would genocide the entire world if it ment keeping the people he cared about alive and well. First against mindless monsters that destroyed his home, family, and deprived him of his freedom condemning him to die in a cage. To an entire planet of people who didn’t regard him and his people as humans and actively reveled in there suffering and death. Then went on to break down again at knowing they weren’t actually bad people but he’d have to kill them all or watch his home be destroyed again without him doing anything to stop it. Totally comparable with him simping so bad over someone he never showed romantic interest in to the point of emotional abusing and gaslighting her and hoping she’d never be happy again. Going as far as showing her an entirely possible alternate future where they were happy together just for her to understand what she’d never get to experience. You know, just quirky whiny Eren things

The Warriors never committed Genocide. They were ordered to kill quite a lot of people and they were punished for that by Marley and they rest of the world. They were even being punished even before they killed anyone. Eren killed 80% of the world. Likely wiped a few races and ethnic groups off the face of the earth. That is only comparable to the Eldians killing 3 times the population of the entire world during their 1900 years of dominance over the entire world [ something that every single Eldian who wasn't living safe, free and secure on the Island of Paradis protected by the Walls] have been constantly punished for for 100 years. He also nearly succeeded in completing the dreams of the 1st King Fritz. The Warriors were very much punished. They were rewarded with a long life because in the end they redeemed themselves and really helped save the world and billions of innocent lives. Eren can take comfort in knowing that he managed the free the world from the horrid curse of the Titans. Yes we saw the tree, so Titans might return however it's been hundreds of years so technology would have advanced so much that Titans are now no longer a threat since the Humans in the world of AOT likely now have nuclear arms to easily destroy Titans should they emerge once again.

They didn't redeem themselves because it was Eren's plan from the very beginning to make them heroes. They didn't save the world on their own merit. Eren orchestrated it. yes, thank you. The problem with all of this was the comedic tone. Like you said it doesn't fit here, in fact, there were a lot of moments where I felt that Sasha's jokes were inappropriate as well. Isayama was trying to make the ending less sad, but the humor here didn't help. It's not as bad as people make it out to be. He said this to Armin, he didn't mean it. Any person would look as pathetic if they ever tried to explain a selfish feeling they suddenly had.

Personally, knowing what he had done, Eren breaking down could have had better reasons like.... "I wish I could find another way, Armin. Another way to save us.....but I couldn't. I didn't mind the panel. He's a 19 year old who had his dreams denied to him because of racism and imperialism. He didn't get to explore the world or be with the one(s) he loved. His own decisions to defend the island pushed them farther apart. I don't think what he said was pathetic especially since he later said he didn't really mean it. He was just expressing his feelings. I do agree that their "relationship" could have been fleshed out more though.

We can all agree that seeing the future with the immense toll it had on 19yo Eren would make him the way he is after, wonder what would've happened on the outcome if Eren hasn't witnessed any of the future.

I can understand the people that didn't like this panel or the ending in general but in reality they too failed to realize that this panel was way more meaning and depth, people just didn't like it because they were Brainwashed by Chad Yeager,the cold-hearted devil,the very same thing that we see in the attack on Titan story itself.(brainwashing) And all of that ,it should've ended this way but the other way is just theories,and theories are not reality, people might agree with these theories,but they also might disagree with them,others might like certain aspects of them. There is a difference between how I want a story to end and how it actually ends,there is no certain future because the ending of a story is the essentially future. When writing a story things are not as simple as putting two things together, it's deeper..

Writing Eren as a pathetic "incel" (a meltdown about the sacrifices would have been fine) to somehow punish him for the rumbling is shit writing. If genocide in this situation is really so easy to argue against, why is it necessary to retcon Eren to deliver the message "genocide wrong"? And if the writing was based on karma, Reiner, Annie and Pieck wouldn't have gotten happy endings. Also Eren crying in front of Ramzi isn't really an example of pathetic whining. Anyone else would have behaved like that. How many characters would have said "No, I don't want that!!" ?

What tf was the point of rumbling 80% of the population if the 20% was just gonna wipe out Paradis later on. Such dumb writing. If the goal was to have his friends live long lives, then Zekes plane would have made more sense

I think people generally look at this scene from the wrong point of view. Most people see it as Eren being upset about Mikasa finding another man but from my point of view, it’s WHY he does. I read the duration of (what is season 4 plus this) seeing Eren go from a young boy with a fire in his heart to a jealous, wrathful, selfish, man child that will kill anyone who makes him upset, or even sacrifice the safety of his people to get petty revenge on everyone who was born outside of the walls (cause he can). This is my perspective. You can have yours. It’s because of that I see this scene as Eren’s selfish, jealous nature poking through. Him less upset about losing Mikasa, rather than being the only one who can have her. I think most people miss this because (tbh) most people who watch AOT are probably Weebs who can’t understand anything that’s not a slice of life anime where plot points have to be directly said out loud and shoved repeatedly down their throats to comprehend.

Well everyone is entitledtled to their opinion but for me , this is almost perfectly accurate , but just a little change in the dialogues but with more emotional outburst would've been PERFECT . As we have to take this in account which many people fail or refuse to do so , that he has suffered , like actually fucking suffered , for 4 years , he had his whole manga spoiled to him and that thought of Rumbling would've actually scarred his personality , let alone the fact that just before this panel or Actually while this panel was happening he was just making those memories into REALITY , he's doing the genocidal RUMBLING , this is enough to scar him for life and even after that , he knows he can't be forgiven and will be dead before ever telling her all about how he suffered and had felt for her since like forever , and this one's a theory but i'mma take this into account cause it's not fundamentally wrong , who knows , maybe after gaining the FOUNDER , he had to change the entire 2000 years worth of history just to get him to this point , as it's evident that he's made Dina do the same thing , he psychologically changed her path , so who knows he had to do it how many times , now count all of this together , why are people still saying , this is out of character , r u a fucking Idiot or something , is your brain smaller than your left testicle , and when people say it's not logical in relation to mikasa , well who knows that he had to keep himself ( the present eren ) away from her , maintaining distance from her just cause it was necessary , for instance , the moment you just showed season 2 final death kiss scene , maybe He ( coordinate EREN ) made his present self change paths , like psychologically made him save all of them by doing TATAKAE , just so that MIKASA and eveyone fighting can stay alive , it got to such lengths that he himslef tried to escape the reality in season 4 when he asked her himself about if she loves him , even after knowing the answers , IT'S ACCURATE .

What ruined it for me was the fact that Paradis eventually got destroyed , which kind of makes the whole story pointless.
