What's "cringe" about lifers? They committed to their lifestyle, instead of being posers when they where young.

Agreed! That said, it's a bit of an iffy sitch when it comes to posers. Personally, attending my first few shows in my teenage years (late 90's), I def felt self conscious since I was a newbie to the scene and hardly knew anyone. As time went on, I felt more comfortable at shows and around other like minded peeps and overall music fans. Although my early show days were pure anxiety, I knew I found the music and style that would remain with me for all my life! I'm a lifer so prep to cringe😬😬😬😬😬

I saw a guy jump off stage n run to the booth to fight the sound guy once. He wouldn’t turn something up after multiple requests… Ruined the show. However..there are some really great sound guys out there, and they really do know better. Let em make you sound good. They know the venue/acoustics (hopefully)

I was at a Dystopia show and I saw this one guy down a whole 12oz BOTTLE , not to be confused with those little children's aluminum Fisher Price "My first beer" that comes in a can mind you but an actual glass bottle of Michelob Ultra back in 1997. I remember it like it was yesterday. Now, I have seen some CRAZY things at DIY shows over the past 30 years from NS Skins coming in and thinking (Oh so very wrongly) they where going to come in and stomp on some "easy" crusty kids in mid 90's Brooklyn out of all places to straight up crew vs crew fights and some HxC shows but NEVER have I seen something as crazy and mega APPLE-CORE than what I witnessed that one cold day in March at ABC No Rio. The crowed cheered with both enthusiasm, pride in the scene and utter disbelief as he downed that 12oz bottle in one go as the sun dipped down in the L.E.S so perfectly that you could see a special glint reflecting off the brown bottle. Man, those days are long gone.

What bullshit! This deserves a short, cringeworthy book of me bragging of my punk LEGEND life! The sound guy is _only_ good if he can tell me the cool song that's playing between bands, and if he makes the night sound good. Promoters, if they're like ME, are _LEGENDS!_ I promoted in the 80s & the _only_ reason I'd book a band is because they're fire & everyone wanted to see them. I promoted because of my passion for hardcore. I paid bands out of my pocket if the door didn't supply the contract price. I made bands home-cooked meals & put them in 3-star hotels! I gave everyone gift certificates for Krispy Kreme Doughnuts & filled their gas tanks using mom's credit card! I was LEGEND! Now it's 2023, I'm 55, and I'm a Lifer _LEGEND!_ In the past two years I've seen every hardcore show in DFW! Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Murphy's Law, the ORIGINAL Misfits (no shit, a one-off show with Alice Cooper & FEAR! that _sold out_ a 23K seat Dallas pavilion!), Dead Boys, OFF!, Turnstile, Knocked Loose, Drain, Scowl, DRI, TSOL, Negative Approach, 7 Seconds, Agnostic Front, Sick of it All, Terror, GBH, MDC, and many more! If a show/band is duper-dope I'll see them in Austin, too. When I found out Adrenalin OD were celebrating their book release by getting back together & playing 2 shows in NY & NJ, I DROVE from Texas to see them (they are a favorite)! I'll do it again when they open for some of NOFX's East Coast farewell gigs (which haven't been announced). I talked with Keith Morris for 10 minutes after the Circle Jerks gig & we actually engaged! If you know Keith, that's _not_ easy! I spoke with Greg Ginn for 10 minutes, too & didn't ask either for an autograph or a selfie & not once asked about politics between ex Black Flag members! I flipped off Glen Danzig at the Misfits show & he flipped me off too! At shows I don't put toilet paper in my ears & I stand at the edge of the pit & jump in if it's not _too_ violent. I did a stage dive at Knocked Loose! I'm a fucking LEGEND! _Not_ "cringe!" Look at that list of bands above, you can see why half (or more) of the audience has receding gray hair, pot bellies, and a T-shirt with some 80s band! We carry the torch! We are LEGENDS! We used to make fun of old people in the 80s, now we _are_ old(er) people! Damn! When I look at this crazy little book I just wrote I think "Hey, danframptOn may be right in a way! I am cringe!" Read this BS story again & you'll see! But I love it, and don't care! See ya'll at the Drain/Gel show Sat night! Maybe I'll wear a fanny pack, or knee-high socks with shorts! Come on Lifers! We can all be cringeworthy LEGENDS! There! That's the new category! Cringeworthy Legends! Maybe I'll start a band. Now, THAT would be _cringe!_

I suddenly remembered the song 'Breaking and Reaching' by Snapcase. There was a special dance for this sort of music and straight edge chugga-chugga hardcore in general in the 1990s. Ideally you'd be wearing a baseball cap and a tight white singlet. If you had a hooded sweatshirt on, the hood had to be pulled up over the cap. Now comes the most important accessory: the black backpack. You'd clasp the front straps and nod your head and flap and buck like a leaden flag in a hurricane. Hilarious. Really baggy trousers or long shorts with white socks and skate shoes was mandatory. The skinny jeans thing was for hardcore metalheads, swampies, goths and skinheads only-- absolutely no tight black jeans in the hardcore scene in the 1990s. Funny how these sartorial codes and dancing styles were codified silently then sent out wordlessly, like smoke signals sent between teenager bedrooms across the entire country. This song in particular is right on that dangerous precipice seen only with the benefit of hindsight in 2023; take it too far and you've got deeeekhead nu-metal. Sadly, it's the direction it all went in-- 1990s emo-hardcore bore absolutely NO relation to the music and cultural scene known in the early 2000's as 'emo' or 'scene'. Why THAT goofy social-media and high school based scene of things was even called 'emo' I have no idea; it was NOT an organic development whatsoever, as a progressive third wave, but rather an ENTIRELY different scene/mentality. Thus, 1990s emo and all it entailed has disappeared into the mists of time, as if the original 'emo' scene never even existed. The softer 'emo' bands broke up and collectively fell in love with Radiohead. Metallic hardcore took over, all sense of ethics and a DIY-network of countercultural music just died out and this new generation were mainstream in mentality, all wanting to be cool, get chicks and sign to a big (but cool) label. That was the end of that strain of 'emo'. You could ask these coontailed 'emo' kids with backcombed hair, plastic jewellery and smeared eyeliner wearing My Chemical Romance t-shirts in the early/mid 2000's who Kent from Heartattack was, or what Ebullition or Jade Tree was and you'd only hear crickets. People left the hardcore scenes they were somehow subsumed in and then Ebullition style screamo just turned into pop-metal for angry suburban solipsists partial to over-producing their records and really into their hair and becoming rich rockstars. That's NOT a natural progression. It was a separate seed sprouting altogether...with clothing that smells of their mum's fabric softener?! PS= The strange mind virus that took over a great many men in the 1990s for whom being straight edge, tough, Christian AND vegan wasn't enough was 'Krishna Core'. A short lived and amusing trend which targeted the malleable minds within the scene, strangely bypassing females and ravaging male grey matter only. So much of music history has been lost in the mists of time...
