The Worst Movie Adaptation: The Last Airbender

Комедия

From whitewashing to mispronounced characters names and more, here are Letterboxd reviews giving M. Night Shyamalan's 2010 film "The Last Airbender" their scathing (but very entertaining) opinions on what went wrong.

I’ve never seen the movie but my dad, who had never even seen the series, did. I asked him about it, having seen the series, and he said it was the worst movie he’d ever seen. How bad is your movie when someone who’s *never seen the source material* despises it?!

What would make this absolutely hilarious, is that for the live action adaptation that's coming out on Netflix, what they can do for the Ember Island Play episode is to use clips from the movie, and the theater could be a big stadium that changes with bending, hence why it looks like a movie, this would make the episode more hilarious XD

Unfortunately for you, the guys behind Netflix are completely butchering the original source material in favor of "wokeness", hence why the original creators of ATLA left production of the series due to "creative differences". Not once has KZread recommended the trailer for the series. Any businessperson who uses diversity and inclusivity as a means for more financial gain are a special kind of evil, as it completely invalidates the people that genuinely want their voices to be heard and to be recognized as actual living human beings instead of a means to an end for a higher power in the social pyramid. Gay people and people of color are *NOT* money making machines and should *NEVER* be treated as such.

Imagine them doing Ember Island Players and they do the small rock guys scene. Like the actirs doing an obviously firebending move and ten a medium-sized rock hanging on a string from the ceiling slowly rolls through the stage. It would fit in-universe cause it's a Fire Nation play so the earthbending special effects would be a thing they could screw up, AND it would be a hilarious meta joke!

I did find the actual show afterwards. This movie is half-way decent if you don't know anything about ATLA. If you do, the Nickelodeon logo on fire is accurate symbolism. I wonder if the new live-action show is going to somehow be worse, at least the movie had left some room for character development.

I remember seeing the Last Airbender movie when I was younger. I had no knowledge of the source material and, therefore, no context of what I was watching (plus I was six or seven, so I wouldn't have made heads or tails of it anyway). I don't think my parents had seen the show, so they likely didn't understand it either. Recently, however, I finally watched the original cartoon series and I love it. I haven't seen the movie again in 14 years, and I'm not sure if I want to, but knowing that they tried to fit the entirety of the first season into just an hour and 30-something minutes, it's kind of obvious how that was destined to bomb.

My uncle hates animation with a passion. He thinks it only works when it’s Looney Tunes or anything similar, and if any animation features good story or characters or drama, he only hates it even more since to him all those things only mean anything if they have “real people” presenting it, otherwise it’s all wasted. I thought showing him Avatar would convince him, but he still hated it. Then he went ahead and saw the movie, and given how everyone hated it I thought he’d finally get it, but no. He liked the movie more purely because it’s live action, and nothing else mattered. Sometimes I don’t get him.

The kid who played Aang in the movie was in only one other film around the same time called Cowboys and Aliens, and I actually remember being stunned when I found out that was the same kid because his acting was actually pretty emotive and half decent in that movie. It just goes to show you how actors of all skill levels seem to forget how to act when Shyamalan starts directing them. Also whenever I'm having a bad day, I like to look up the pebble dance scene, because half a dozen earthbenders doing a dance so they can very slowly levitate a small rock into the face of a guy who's probably too stunned at how stupid this is to get out of the way is hilarious to me. It's the only good scene in the entire film.

I watched this travesty of a movie years before I saw the show. I legitimately couldn't keep Iroh and Zhao straight. I didn't even realize Zuko had a scar for crying out loud! I didn't hate the movie at the time, but it didn't seem that good either. Just eh. Then, I finally saw the show. Before the end of the first episode, I realized two things. I realized that the movie was a pile of hot garbage, and I realized why everyone loves the show so much. I binge watched the entire show in a about a month (which is saying something considering I was in high school at the time). I couldn't get enough of it. Everything is so good. I've rewatched the show a couple times since then because it's just that good. How did they mess up the movie so badly? I don't understand how it's even possible to start with the show as a source material and end with the movie.

Worth mentioning that the show's intro, when showing all four elements, shows actual, ancient Chinese writing in the background. The movie's recreation of the intro has random bullshit nonsense pen strokes, that vaguely sort-of resemble Chinese (to me anyway, I don't speak Chinese so maybe it really looks nothing like it to a fluent speaker.) Reminds me of how 4Kids anime dubs got rid of every reference to Japanese culture and changed names for no reason other than Americanizing it. The removal of actual Chinese, on top of the whitewashing, makes me feel some kind of emotion I can't describe, but it's not a good emotion.

If I had seen this when it first came out as a fan of the show I would have been devastated but intead I spent the whole time making fun of it and then went and looked back over the season 1 episode summaries to see how I would have done a better adaptation. And then introduced my family to the show and watched in glee as I made them suffer through the movie too. Good times. I'm looking forward to the Netflix show. It would take some serious talent to do a worse job than this did and even just from the trailers that are out it seems to be an improvement. I'm just gonna start off by saying that this film is pure disrespect to the original script of the original series. In the original, Aang seems like a brave and strong boy who fights for the people he loves, but in the film he is a scared child who gives up everytime he's being attacked. Not just that, but the cgi and the actors are horrible, I mean.. 6 earthbenders doing a 10 second ritual to move a single pebble? And don't even get me started on the pronounciations of the names. I don't even want to talk about it, but after painfully watching the film to the end only because I adore this fandom I have to talk about it. Saying Ovatar instead of Avatar, saying Ong instead of Aang, saying Soukka instead if Sokka and saying Eeroh instead of Iroh. Disgusting. The scar on Zuko's face represents the trauma he had from that one day, vut in the movie, it's barely shown and he doesn't show his deep feelings and isecurities showing that it deeply reminds him of a horrible day. I'm commenting this because I deeply care about the show and I want to express my feelings for this peice of garbage. Hope they go bankrupt. Thank you for anyone who read this to the end ❤

I used to think that this movie was the Avatar movie with the blue species (for reference, I haven’t seen either movie), so when I heard that the fan base disliked this movie, I was like “Of course, it has absolutely nothing to do with the original source material” 😭

I used to watch the series all the time with my dad and sister, my dad watched the movie, told me how terrible it was. The first thing he complained about was the names being incorrect and I immediately hated it. Also he told me about the earth bending being terrible and seeing that they need FIVE earth benders to move a rock I could have moved the exact same way is hilarious and sad. I hope I never have the unfortunate experience of seeing it.

This is a terrible live-action adaptation, but it's not the WORST. At least you could tell Shyamalan WATCHED the animated series, unlike the people who made Dragonball: Evolution.

wait until they read the children’s book “the dark is rising” which got American fried, the main anganist removed, the main character’s master removed, and the plot is now about a dude whose brother is in a snow globe.

Why don't we all collectively agree that this trash movie is now a parody? The next time I watch it, I'm going to pretend it was supposed to be a parody so maybe I'll get some enjoyment out of it this time. I also watched it before I watched the show, and I wasn't aware of how bad it was, so I wasn't excited for the show. I loved the show, and now I get it. Shame on me.
