    11:53 I did some research, turns out that's not an FEF class locomotive. The locomotive is actually a new york central Niagara locomotive with it's smoke deflectors removed, its NYC black paint replaced with the UP greyhound livery, and a Vanderbuilt tender replacing its NYC centipede tender. I guess you could also nickname this engine "the northeast imposter"

    That explains ALOT about it. I bet they're the old ones with split chassis, also plastic axles(Because of the Split chassis design) which means the wheels like to fall off. My old Niagara also have issues with the valve gear easily bending/getting jammed. (typically a result of a wheel coming off it's axle

    I actually had a great laugh (cause it was funny) over your rating/punishment of the 66 given I’ve got a DB Schenker one, without the wrap! I had it running on a club model railway layout last month, and there are 2 sections it has to get up a decent gradient. Had a mixture of 12 wagons behind her, from hoppers to loaded container wagons, and she did it with ease. Weirdly enough, some commented it was “smooth!” Which I know goes against the experience you had for it. But overall I agree, it’s a cheap loco, isn’t the greatest, needs to be overhauled but is still relatively okay.

    A shame about the ROD, I wanted it for a long time before your review, I actually got it for my birthday soon after. I do still like it. Maybe one day I can find a way of cutting notches into the chassis to fit bearings for the axles, so that the lifetime of them can be extended. Maybe replace the motor as well. I guess you can count this as "defending it" but I think the lack of detail (around the outside) is prototypical, it's an army engine, they weren't built to be pretty. But for the price you are right, a less detailed loco should be cheaper, especially with the horrible mechanism. Thankfully mine didn't come with the glue marks in the cab, and so I can just admire the great looks of it's interior, they did do a great job with that part.

  • @SamsTrains

    @SamsTrains

    2 жыл бұрын

    The RODs aren't absolutely terrible - I think the mechanisms are, but they can run well, for a time at least! The lack of detail/basic decoration wasn't a criticism by any means - I just think the price was unreasonably high given how simple the model was! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

No excuse for manufactures to produce such tact for the high prices they charge and pricing more hobbyists and new owners, e.g., young children, grandparents, out of the market

    Hi Sam, great video. I paid £165 for The Isle of Wight Steam Railway's EFE Adams 02 and it is perfect! I bought it to help them out during COVID. It has the best detail, paint and finish of the 50 or so OO locos I own. It is the quietest runner I own too. My Bachmann 1P looks great but slows to a crawl and stall or takes off at Mach 2 without touching the controller. I have 3 Hornby Schools that are perfect unlike yours. Quality Control seems to be a massive problem and I also think that locos bought from discount outlets are not as good as the ones I buy from my local shop or by mail order small retailers. I will just add that I only own 50 or so as I have sent over 20 back to online discounters and zero back to my local store or small shop online retailers. Keep up the good work young man

A loco that didn't run, had massive detail issues (including that cab) and wobbly plastic ... bleurgh! Marry Christmas, Sam.

    Hi Sam, you are so right about the Bachmann ROD. Mine is a seriously poor runner, binding as it moves. However I have a couple of the O2s from the Kernow/DJ stable, and they are quite good. They are not the heaviest, but can haul rather more than you found, and the finish is neat and well done. I wonder if EFE is using a different factory.

    Owned the Bachmann Niagara and FEF models for 6 years now (though they all use the Niagara shell). My complaint is the wretched wiring between the locomotive and tender. The wiring is rather fragile to be hanging so low near the rails. Locomotives without the wiring take switches and curves much easier.

    Hello Sam. I came across your videos quite by chance, but you have brought MANY smiles to this miserable old bugger!! I just LOVE your honesty and very self-effacing style. You are the most interesting and amusing "anorak" I have ever seen!! I have NO IDEA why people bother to argue with you; It is patently clear that you really know your stuff! The first video I watched was your review of the "Hush Hush" and I was so impressed with the lengths you went to, to give it a fair "crack of the whip"! (I think I would have thrown it out of the window!) Mind you; I would have ensured the window was open first, as after paying £120.00 for the thing, I wouldn't have wanted to add a glaziers bill to my costs! Shame; beautiful looking model, but Hornby have dropped the ball on this!! (a ball of coal? a ball of diesel? a ball of steam?!!!) Im afraid no analogy comes to mind! Either way, thanks for your videos! I will be watching MANY more! Take care, regards, James.

    I expected most of these. However, I like the ROD because it runs well although I had the same issues as you with handrails etc. I liked my class 17 so much I bought another. Mine do run faster than yours but I don't tend to run them quickly anyway. I just love the look of them and they run so well over all my points. It's a shame Hornby put the sticker on the class 66. I own several others and they don't have any. They lack some detail but that is less important to me. I always add a TTS chip and sometimes lights.

    Once again- prototype steam locos had their boiler cladding made in two halves. These joined along the top of the boiler. In some cases they had a rivetted band over the join, in many more there was no band and the plates just overlapped. On a model these should be shown as a straight join line.

    the Bachmann union pacific model sam isn't that bad. They made two versions the wired and nonwired. I have the non wired and mine doesn't derail that much, actually, the reason mine derails is because it is too big for the curve. But the actually tender to chassie connection I will say is pretty poor, it doesn't stay on and it falls off too easily but other than that, I think it's just your version, so I wouldn't say it's 2nd place on worst of 2021. All that aside cheers to 2022 hope u have a great Christmas and a happy new year

    There is a brand called Piko trains. I believe they are releasing a new HO model called the USATC Whitcomb 65t. Unfortunately it is rather pricey. If you want a two rail loco with no sound it is $280 USD or if you do want sound, it is $380 USD. Rather expensive, but it does look pretty interesting. Also if possible I'd like to send you an email of my new HO scale model train layout my Grandpa and I built. I have to finish wiring the buildings up before I can send photos. If we actually consider what goes into the production of a OO loco its amazing that they retail for what they do! Most of them should be mo where near the £100 mark. I imagine the mark up from factory to shop is quite a bit. Its possible the likes of Hornby and Bachman test the market with their prices and they know how much they can push the price up and people will still pay. And lets not forget wagons and coaches that do not even have motors! Overall a bit of a rip off to be a model train enthusiast.

    I've got an O4 and a 30xx, and completely agree with the lack of finesse and overstated price as per your ROD version of the Robinson 8K. I've got a 17, which burned out earlier this year and may not get repaired because it was so poor (I'm yet to properly run my 15 which burned out 4 years ago and I replaced its motor). And I have a hornby 59 which cost me £50 maybe 8 years ago, so judging by the inflation of model train costs put it as more expensive than your 66, but the mechanism is exactly the same and only runs well now I've doubled its weight. Fortunately, its livery (aggregate industries) is much better than your wrapped one. I haven't had that many new additions this year since I'm unemployed, but I have had several through. And discounting the lima 47s (of which 786 Roy Castle OBE in EWS livery arrived today), I'd say my worst model would be the rails/heljan 18000 Gas Turbine loco. For £200 just about, the lack of driven centre axle (which derails over slightly uneven pointwork, which nothing else in my almost-300-strong fleet does aside from other heljan Co-Cos with floating centre axles) and the lack of bogie movement (not stated on the website, turns out they aren't suitable for less than 3rd radius) as well as a missing lamp iron, having to drill into the model's nose to fix the GWR train indicator frame, the very lightly sprung buffers, the very fragile and wonky whistles, and the lining not meeting up at the joins properly, are all completely unacceptable. I would refuse to get 18100, although I do really want to complete the trio of british gas turbine locos (and I may get the rapido APT-E to make it all 4 gas turbine trains).
