    Hello Sam! As a German steam train enthusiast it’s very easy to tell when a locomotive is a model/ modelled after a German steam loco, all German steam locomotives have red wheels and mostly red body, they are also HUGE locos in real life

    It probably only cost 1 pound to make it. Just a plastic molded shape, which probably cost 20 pence and a 50 pence motor. Cheap and nasty. The only reason they can sell it at all is because it is sold as a "model train." If you put wheels and a motor on a dried up dog turd and called it a locomotive, could you sell if for 50 pounds?

    I had this exact engine from PIKO, it was packaged in a polystyrene box and cardboard box, and it had a numberplate DB 98003. Out of three engines called BR 98 this reminds none of them and the catalogue has it as "Dampflok mit tender" (Steam engine with tender) and it appears in many start sets. I no longer run it, but it is very fast (and the tender sometimes comes off) This could be just some factory making them for piko and sending some unbranded

    This Oi2 29 is an absolute enigma. A seemingly German 0-2-2-0 that appears to appears to be an overpowered tank engine eqipped with a tender and no ability to acess the cab. It half resembles some sort of AI creation, naturally made by an AI that has no understanding of trains. At least it's got some nice moulded detail.

  • @daylightman8459
    @daylightman84593 жыл бұрын

    6:34: Actually, that would be a 0-2-2-0 “double single” if the front wheels are driven too. The back wheels of an 0-2-2-0 are driven by the coupling rods and outside cylinders. The front wheels are driven by an internal cylinder and internal valve gear. Hope this info is useful!

    It looks to me like parts of different models that were put together. The boiler, the cab and the tender are those of a German class 24. Some locos of that class remained in Poland after the war where they were reclassified as Oi2. However the chassis comes from something completely different: As you can see in the photo you found, the German 24/Polish Oi2 is a 2-6-0 and the driving wheels are bigger than those of the model. They also made some changes to the loco body. They added water tanks on the sides of the boiler, which doesn‘t make any sense in a tender engine, and unlike the prototype the model doesn‘t have deflectors.

    Hey sam, from what i've seen this loco appears to be based on a german DRG-class 80 tank engine from one of the german manufacturers like pico, roco, or fleischmann, but with the coal bunker chopped off to make room for a tender (hence why the buffers on the back). Don't get the wrong taste of these tho, i've owned one of these little tank engines before and they're actually quite lovely little models, and with insane detail on the newer ones, you should review one in the future, german models are quite different quality wise, this one appears to be a cheap knockoff of one of the ones from the 1990's to early 2000's era

    I'm 99.99% sure this is old Piko tooling. As a kid in the USSR, this engine came in a starter set that my parents gifted me in the late 1980s. It's a German-based outline, but doesn't match any specific prototype. On the Piko version, the connecting rods, while plastic, were finished in a shiny metal paint, and the cab was open in the back (with the motor showing).

    Yeah, those tiny, closely-spaced wheels seem mismatched for the loco size. Seems to me that in the real world, with the loco itself being super heavy, the loco would have a tendency to fall on its 'nose' when not attached to a train. I suppose the tender might prevent that, but it seems a poor design decision nonetheless.

At the very least, I am pretty sure the Reichsbahn (whose red/black color scheme is on this model) never had a B / 0-4-0 tender engine.

    My very first locomotive was just like this my dad bought it in the late 80's or early 90's (it's an ancient PIKO design that really hasn't changed a bit through the decades some early ones where made with steel frames and 9V motors also there's an other type made with the exact same frame and running gear that's a tank locomotive without the tender hence the holes for the buffers at the back, older ones where fitted with better quality motors but they're all kinda loud) and ran it a lot then later gifted it to me in 2007 the bearing surfaces in the frame worn out once but we put little seel bushings into them, they might be cheaply made but they are basically indestructible. Also worth mentioning that they where mostly sold in sets and where basically the only models people could afford in the Eastern Block.

    @@SamsTrains Hi there, I'm probably very late to the party but I know those fairly well. The piece you have is a sh*ttier version of already sh*tty PIKO 50501 (often marked as DB98 003, but I tend to believe there is no such thing in reality). It shares the same drivetrain with the PIKO 50500, which is loosely based on the real DB80 and here is the history behind that: The series was started in about 1960's, but there was produced the "true" DB80 model with three axles, same body but different drivetrain and also a version for the startset (a toy basically). I don't know when they added the version with tender but in 1980's it already did exist. As the time went on, they simplified the drivetrain more into the one you have now. Nowadays you can only buy the "proper 3-axle" DB80 marketed as the DB80 and I believe those cheap ones do just carry the product code 50500 and 50501, but they are still based on the old DB80 toy 2-axle versions until now. I had the old 2-axle DB80 made in 1970's as a kid and I bought exactly the same recently again, so I actually own the older smaller sister of the loco you have here, but the drivetrain with gears is basically the same. You may see it in my 2021 Xmas layout vlog and I can eventually provide you with some details for comparison. Anyway, best regards form CZ! You do a great job with the cheap loco's reviews!

    hi sam. I think you should be less defensive about this stereotype problem. like i don't think you're a bad person or anything, but it's not a good thing to get defensive about something when people are concerned that you're perpetuating harmful stereotypes. It's a step in the right direction to refit the bit, but it feels kind of hollow with the way you did it.

  • @SamsTrains

    @SamsTrains

    3 жыл бұрын

    I’m sorry, I do feel defensive. It’s been an incredibly rough year, and there’s a lot of nasty stuff in the world. When people seek to remove jokes or comedy from context in order to call them offensive or ‘cancel’ them, I do feel defensive, because as the trend continues, everything becomes off-limits, and we’ll find that we can’t laugh at ourselves anymore. This will be (and has already been) disruptive to the entertainment industry that I love. Distinctions must be made between offensive material with dangerous, malicious intent, and harmless entertainment intended purely to amuse. Not everyone has to feel as I do, and that’s a good thing. The fact that I disagree with the criticism here is perfectly acceptable too, though please recognise that I have now removed the character that was objected to.

  • @WhirligigGirl

    @WhirligigGirl

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@SamsTrains this isn't about cancelling. this is about improving yourself so that you don't make the videos uncomfortable for some people. Comedy doesn't work in a vacuum. It's subjective. So that means what you think is funny might not be what others find funny, and if your audience doesn't like the joke, you're doing a bad job at relating to your audience. the trouble is that you weren't really laughing at *yourself*, you're laughing at another racial/ethnic/national group of people. Regardless of the intent that's how it's perceived. Also, I get it. We're all having a rough year. If you want to feel defensive then you're entitled to that. But we're grown ups here (albeit grown ups who like trains an awful lot, occasionally colorful talking ones), we don't have to show it. The distinction you mention is a useful one, and it's why I don't think you're a bad person. But just because you didn't do something harmful on purpose doesn't mean it wasn't a bad thing to do. I'm not really interested in continuing this back and forth, but I will say one last thing. It would be useful for you to consider why it's such a big deal that racist jokes are "off limits," why it's so important that you be able to make racist stereotypical jokes without criticism.

Just as the Japanese laugh as the traditional American stereotype of a blond, war-crazed soldier and Americans frequently laugh at the British stereotype of a hat-wearing, tea-drinking Bond villain. For Example: there are stereotypes for Chinese products, stereotypes for pitbulls, stereotypes about British people not being able to say Certain Syllables, Just to name a few stereotypes. They exist in everything because that's just the way people are. The thing is at the end of the day I don't get offended by the el cheapo thing because I can take a joke and I can see the humorin it. This channel is about model/toy trains and we are all hear to have fun. But In my opinion the most offensive thing about it is how cringy it is lol Regards Adam

    @@adamrivera3327 look I get that but I just hate how Sam doesn’t understand why some would be upset. I would be fine if he just apologized and moved on. Hell I wasn’t even that upset when I first saw el cheapo but the way he handled it is what I had a promotion with. Instead of handling this real issue seriously he just says everyone else is to blame since they can’t take a joke. Also telling someone to take a joke is a bit offensive. Everyone has a right to be offended by something.

    El Cheapo seems to have migrated over here to become an English Gentleman! I don't think that the old intro was offensive in any way, I quite enjoyed his exotic character, but the new one is very good too!

    This 'model' does have a prototype, which is the DR class 24. It was produced in Germany since the late 1920s until mid-1930s. After the WWII some of these were used in Poland and were classified as Oi2. The wheel configuration of this locomotive in real life was 2-6-0.

    It wasnt kids on twitter it was full grown adults who are right. Theres no need to keep pedalling tired out stereotypes in this day and age. Honestly el cheapo annoyed me when it first turned up but Honestly this snarky response has rubbed me up the wrong way even more :( Yes its good to have fun and i love seeing your cheap and nasty reviews but the whole el cheapo thing really doesn't add anything. I normally love your wit and sarcasm especially when roasting companies but the first few mins of this have Honestly left me feeling disappointed. Can we all move forward and just leave the el cheapo character behind us? Full steam ahead and on to more great future vids! ❤

    The majority of the accounts I looked at were around 15 years of age. Some of whom persisted in posting irrelevant images out of context in order to falsly push the narrative that I'm racist. The rest, rather than just not watching content they didn’t like, as an adult would, fought to try and ‘cancel’ it. Their age combined with their behaviour led me to the conclusion: children. As for being right, it was a subjective discussion - nobody is right and nobody is wrong. They felt El-cheapo was offensive, I did not. People are allowed to disagree. I approached the response the same way I do anything - through humour - but let it be known that I made changes, even though I didn't think they were necessary, because I do not want to offend people, and that matters to me. I'm sorry if it came across as snarky, but be reminded that I didn't agree with those assertions for reasons I've previously explained. Please don't feel disappointed - like all of my skits, they're designed to be meaningless. Don't waste your energy worrying or getting upset about this - try to read it as it was intended! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    This is the exact same copy of the old PIKO BR98 starter pack stem loco. It's made since the 60's-70's. Usually you can get one used for 7-10 pounds. Fun fact, PIKO still produces cheap analouge starter packs, that are came with this BR98 +2 coaches. And because PIKO produces in China, no wonder, you can get one of theese brand new on eBay or Wish. And for a lot of kids back in the days, this little engine with the coaches was it's first ever model train.

    I actually had this train back when I was high school and I got it as a set with 2 passenger cars and track (no controller) for $30 US but this was almost 20 years ago. It didn’t make near as much noise at that you have there. I also remember the brand being PIKO actually. They make other German style trains that are waaaaaay more realistic than this one I can tell you that. I ended trading it for some other odds and ends at my local railroad museum. From what I remember it didn’t stay long there so someone has it and is enjoying I hope. I have a ROCO 2-10-0 decapod that my dad and I modeled to make it look like a war train with weathering and sandbags on the engine. That one is a much better runner I can say that for a fact.

    Hey Sam! I think you should covert the Heljan 1361 tank engine into a free wheeler, or turn it into a Smudger/Stanley type engine. Take the boiler, smokebox, and saddle tank, and put them next to the crane, it can then be useful as a steam generator.

    By the markings I can tell it's supposed to be a PKP (Polish railway) engine. But I'm not sure if PKP ever had 0-4-0 tender engines. And another thing, I've heard those "Ho scale 1:87 german intial european steam diorama kids architecture" engines aren't that well made. By the way, Great video as always!
