The Worst Flying R.O.G. Launch Ever ?!

The 'Piggy Plane' (Swine Flew embryo)...trying an ROG for the first time. Film shows the attempts of launching via "Rise Off Ground", the rubber-powered free-flight model of the pusher-canard Swine Flew embryo from a table top. The model was designed by the late Bob Gable, built by Tom Hallman. Graphics by granddaughter, Zinnia Jane. Model weighs 19 grams. 17-7/8” span. Filmed with an iPhone 11 & 14 Pro, and a Canon PowerShot SX20. Music: "Come On" by Effronté via Artist.io.
You can build the same model twice, yet they may need totally different trimming solutions. Therein lies the challenge & fun of rubber-powered free-flight.

    Do you hear the music in your head when flying, or pick it later (lol)? Thanks for sharing - it puts my usual blunders in perspective to know that even someone as accomplished as you sometimes struggles! Hope thateventually gets sorted; obviously a lovely flyer. Cheers!

    Oh! Ouch! Yi, Yi, Yi! Oh, the sound of the motor unwinding in the broken hub! Several lessons learned. Landing gear not stiff enough to support the motor torque. This landing gear has to work. Plane starts level to clear pusher prop. Not like tractor where the tail is low, the prop points up and immediately pulls the plane into the air, quickly unloading the landing gear. ROG on this one may require a long takeoff run to get up to liftoff speed. Maybe slope the deck uphill. Fortunately it survived to fly another day. Plan doesn't give wire diameter. Doesn't show motor peg, presumably hook was to be in foreword plug. What are those round things under the fuselage below the wing leading edge?

    In this case, they could be nipples. Actually, they're faux exhaust stacks, as suggested by the FAC in embryo competition for bonus points.

    You are right, that was - interesting! Is your granddaughter in the cockpit? Have you got it tamed yet, with longer and stiffer legs, or is it only a hand launch model? Seems to fly nicely!

    Yes, that's little Z. With her artwork on the model's wing. Love it! The model has since flown very well, as shown in the links at the end, but what's curious is the trim needed to get her off the table. Doesn't seem to marry well with the trim she needs in flight. Perhaps a bit more cross section will be the ticket...as I hope to fly her again this spring.

    landing gear wires are a liiiiiiitle thin. and do those wheels even spin? haha great fun.

  • @maxfliart

    @maxfliart

    Ya think? Haha. I actually kept the wires (since she needed tail weight already, so I didn't want to make her even heavier up front) but I added a thread as a spacer to keep them from splaying. I might add 1" gussets at the top of the LG. The thread worked well enough, but she also needed a support wire on the tail rudder to offset that torque lean. But yes, the wheels do spin. She just looked to pitiful, unhappy, as she crawled to the table's edge. Hilarious.
