As someone who moved to London in 1978 I can confirm that is true! You can get very good fish in chips in the London area, but it will never taste as good, as they fry in oil!

I feel like the Major in Fawlty Towers when someone says it's the worst hotel: 'NO! I WON'T have that! There's a place in Eastbourne...' There are some far worse chippies.

The Late Bernard Manning once said "I was in a Fish & chip shop, and I asked if the fish was cooked, they said yes, Why? He said it's ate all My f@cking chips"

There nothing wrong with frozen fish if it’s FAS frozen at sea just de-frost it first & don’t smother if in ketchup.

I never eat in the centre of London, its a rip off ! There are plenty of very good chippies elsewhere that do excellent fish n chips.. Do the wally test, if they don't know what a wally is, walk out.

Christ almighty, 34 quid for fish and chips and they used to say it was convenient fast food for the plebs..obviously not in london or this day and age

In medieval times, it was believed that lemon juice would desolve fish bones, so lemon was on hand whenever fish was eaten in case you got a bone in the throat, the tradition has just carried on.

For 34 quid I want a cod that's been hand reared by Japanese virgins and speaks fluent Flemish.

I think I can do worse than these two. The nastiest fish and chips that I've eaten in London was from a shop in Cowley, West London. The offering consisted almost entirely of grease-soaked batter accompanied by dry chips. The grease seeped through the wrapper onto my trousers which I had to change. However, the most disgusting fish and chips ever came from St. Austell in Cornwall. I bought a meal deal, basically f&c, mushy peas and a drink. The fish was a thin white line encased in thick, tasteless batter. The chips were soggy and the drink warm. I looked at the plate wondering if I could eat anything other than the peas. I left feeling hungry.

As a southerner I have to point out that Fish&Chips was invented in London, not Yorkshire :)

I went to a fish and chip shop in Wales a few years ago, catch of the day £17 thought I'll give it a go. It arrived and it was a square piece of "cod" I think, what kind of fish comes out of the ocean square, battered and frozen? The same crap you see in Iceland or tesco for 50p. Refused to eat or pay for it. These places should be shut down, false advertising for a start let alone ripping tourist's off. I feel ashamed that people come from all over the world to eat that, no wonder we have a terrible stereotype with food.

£3 for chips is what I can get over. Chips are only £4 in a Michelin star restaurant how the hell are they charging £3 for the worst chips you can buy! 😳

I used to work in Neal Street many years ago, which is the next street over, so this was our nearest chippie & by the looks of it it's changed a lot in the last 25 years! I don't think it was ever regarded as amazing, but it was quite OK & no complaints, most people usually eat outside I remember, under an awning. Rents in Covent Garden were starting to go crazy when I was there, so they will be beyond astronomical now, so you do have to bear that in mind, but yes for that, i expect near perfect. You can usually tell good from average to bad straight away, as I always look for batter that looks like dry, spikey coral, that was shiny & very flat, it's not going to be good. Shame, it's been done up nicely, but they haven't a clue obviously.

Why don't you complain to the staff instead of moaning outside it would be interesting to hear their excuses why the fish was frozen and why they lied

I’m British and i’d also moan after the event 😂.

I think the last thing you want to hear from the person making your food is “I’ll give it a go.” 😂😂

And every mug that pays keeps them open.

Place to avoid, for sure, a culinary con-job, if ever there was one!

London prices are high but reality is that's a tourist trap, so you're better off going to a fish and chip takeaway shop. Better quality and very likely better prices.

Radleys fish bar in Sheldon Birmingham , the mice in the back of the shop did poos in the batter bucket and the manager , instead of throwing batter away , picked the mouse droppings out 🤮 early 80’s , I worked there

FAS is standard and can be if defrosted first as good or better then fresh. Cooked from frozen is a no no. Catering for tourists who will never be returning customers.

Your wrong ffas can be cooked from frozen, rinse under cold tap to remove the salt glaze dry then steam poach fry bake what ever way you want to just add a couple mins onto cooking time

Did you think the Scampi was fresh and not frozen ? 99% of fish and chip shops use frozen fish.

15 years ago that Fish and Chip Shop were the best around,sad too it go downhill

Frozen fish is actually fresher than fresh fish it’s caught filleted and frozen in under a hour where as fresh fish can actually be a week old b4 it’s even got to the chip shop 2-3 days on the boat land it sell it on the market get it in to the restaurant big long process

The problem with *ANY* frozen food is the breakdown of the tissue as the cells expand as the water freezes. This is very much the case with seafood, especially fish. Whatever advantages were had by being snap-frozen quickly after catch are lost and then some, by the physics of it. Thawing doesn't help much either, as the water escapes from the now broken cells. 2-3 days in a cool refrigerator for fresh fish is fine.

I agree, the frozen blocks of fish that the chippy uses has a nice sweet taste to it which you'll never get from supermarkets.

frozen fish can be very old gets compressed with the weight and usually some brown bits

Any chippy charging 34 quid for frozen fish and chips deserve the 1.6, i would have went lower than that.

Obvious tourist trap. If he said the fish was fresh and it was obviously frozen then I'd be putting in a complaint to the local Trading Standards people if that were me.

I thought Coral Island was an amusment arcade, also all the fish and chips and all the food on sale is discusting all you can get is really bad fish and chips or really bad burgers, i had to walk to the north shore before i found really bad chinese food wich i ate instead !

Up North,so many GOOD,fish and chip shops to choose from.white flakey fish (never any skin ,like in the south ) crispy golden batter,perfect chips..we’ve never had good chips ,down south….IMO ..

Cheeky 😂 I live 200 yards from an award winning chippy on the Isle of Wight no skin and you see them batter it fresh absolutely beautiful and by the way the award was not just in our village but England! We also despise London con jobs but the country does go further south than that. I went to Grimsby a few years back and that was a disaster so it's swings and roundabouts really so let's share the love😘✌️✌️🇬🇧🇬🇧🍻🍻

Pity about the cost , I could eat it every day, looks great .

I find it the same at any local Harvester, or that hotel in Telford adjoining the football pitch.

You’ll never beat Whitby Fish n Chips… We travel a few times a year from Oldham to Whitby for a day out for Chippy 😀

Must admit it looked rubbish ... it all looked like frozen food ... maybe that's why you both put tomato ketchup on . I'm from the North East of England and up here we have Cod without skin but traditionally Haddock with the skin on ...which is really tasty.

I looked at the fish and chips on plate I didnt think it looked that bad, but when you said the price and that they lied to you. 100% agree with your score.

Never pay that for fish and chips, even in central London and why no mushy peas? Portions looked small as well, about the same size as a Wetherspoon "small fish and chips" which costs about £7.

A big fat 0 from me. They told a lie to a customer regarding what they are serving at a high price. -10 if I could.

Yep...worked in the building opposite this chip-shop. Used to get a bus to Masters Superfish in Waterloo Road, does great fish n chips at a reasonable price. Not been there for a while but they used to do Cod and Chips for £7 (fish wasn't a huge portion, more like a medium but tasted great)

Your first mistake was thinking that any fish and chips could be as good as in Yorkshire...

Ridiculous price, however, I did think the fish & chips looked great but frozen fish? hell no!!

In Stoke on Trent I could get fish and chips for five people and I'd have a fair bit of change from 30 quid.

The best chippy on this planet was Ashton's in great moor.fresh cod chips and peas tea bread and butter £6.10p.and that's not ages ago.they have retired now but they were the best.thanks to Dave and his missus.👍

I don't think you can complain about the price, you've picked one of the most expensive parts of London to eat in! And London is always more expensive than elsewhere in the UK. The further in you go, the more the price goes up. Even Wetherspoons, the prices are more in Central London, rents & rates are just so much higher there...... As an aside, nothing wrong with tea with your fish dinner (and i tend to find tea comes from India.... Do you have secret underground tea growing facilities under the Yorkshire Moor perhaps?..... lol) unless in a pub, then a pint of ale with your fish is a must! And don't be upset about being charged for two cod portions, i've always found scampi to be more expensive than cod, so you've had a right result there my son...... and yes, i am a cockney!....lol Good vid though.....

Actually you can totally complain about the price, even allowing for the usual London mugging that's just embarrassing. At least make it half decent if you're going to bend him over for it - no excuse for that.

Best I've tasted in Wales was at Fecci's in Tenby, as a bonus it's a proper restaurant and you can get a bottle of wine to go with your meal. Worst was on a road trip passing through Pencader village north of Carmarthen.

£34???!!! That shocked me when I heard that - 2 fish, chips and peas with tea or pop you’d be looking at £15 at our local chippy. I appreciate you sat indoors so it was likely to be a little bit more expensive but £34! I didn’t pay for it and I feel like I’ve been ripped off

34 quid and it's frozen fish. Oh dear. Thats not good. I am lucky enough to live near Tyldesley in Manchester and the local chippy is hard to beat for quality and freshness.

One of my local Fish and chips shops in a village near Minehead serve up over cooked dry hard chips. Indigestion in paper. Our other one serves perfect fish and chips.

Managerie, I will use this word to expand my vocabulary 😂😂

Non-brewed condiment was issued during the war. Always did and always will taste far better than the malt muck.

Was Darren's scampi the meal scampi often made using prawns/shrimp or was it scampi as in the little lobstery thing?

Can't of been that bad as you managed to eat the lot.

The worst fish and chips I had was at Hastings in some dive cafe. Placed the order and less than five minutes later my order was placed on my table.

It wouldn't be a British summer without some rain eh - 1.6 is harsh ain't it, maybe if they had missed the chips out then yea lol

It's not raining here in the Canaries Lee. The sun is shining, the Tropical beer is good and comes in frosted glasses (vaso frio) and the tapas is excellent. You're in the wrong place mate!

Was there two weeks ago, the lady owner was saying they couldn't survive much longer without british tourists, and the local brits as much as they try are unable to keep these places going, it's extremely sad 😪

You get a fish tea in Scotland. Its fish and chips, bread and butter and tea. Can't believe your freind hadn't had tea with fish and chips. I'll be in London at the end of July, I know where to avoid now

@@robertlower6212 aye, I just like fish and chips on its own with non salt or viniger. The majority of people like salt I think. Up here the chippies will allso lather them in brown sauce. Fish and chips from a decent chippy, though, dish of the Gods.

I live by the coast and get fresh cod and chips for around £7-9 depending what shop you visit, even when i lived in London up a few years back was only about £7. All chip shops now are very rarely run by English People hence lower quality in most places and lots of Frozen Fish out there, but there are a few foreign run ones which are Ok too. Always avoid any fish and chip shop which sells Kebabs and chicken etc as these are usually the worse.

£34 that was worth only about £15 based on what you got for the money

I also thought this fish n shop was bad and expensive. The fish was old smelly and probably frozen and not fresh my mum returned her dish and changed her order.

How on earth they still in business ??? Rates etc in London extremely high unless this business is a front for other "means"
