My biggest makeup mistake: the absolutely crushing SHAME that I feel when I look at old pics of my eyebrows. Now listen. You might be thinking like ahaha yeah mine where bad too. No. I don’t know what possessed me. It was early snapchat so I think I was just doing things that looked okay with intense filters and low quality photos. You know those pics of bad brows where you’re like “no way someone is actually wearing that. That’s fake.” ..... that’s the level of bad we’re talking here. Dark dark dark brow pomade. “Sharpie brows” doesn’t cover it. For some reason I was drawing well above my brow ? And I have some thick brows naturally so the textural difference between the pomaded areas with hair and not were obvious. I remember I was living with my parents and my mom at some point was like “oh! ... um. Those are a bit extreme, honey, don’t you think?” And I was like “ugh that’s so rude why would you say that this is a LEWK” my poor mother. She was just trying to help. I think back and cringe..........

I also think the real problem with Drew’s yellow shadow was the fact that they didn’t have much coverage. I’ve seen straight up bright yellow eyeshadow look good, but they always had a primer that made the yellow look opaque, and they corrected for redness in the skin. Having a one color look is by nature a bit more editorial, so I think you have to commit to a full makeup look for it to look balanced. Her eyeshadow being a bit translucent on top of her natural skin kinda made her look jaundiced.

@@ZijnShayatanica right ✅ I love doing red eyes too, but you need to be careful or you can look sick and out of it, it's not really a colour you can haphazardly apply, a quick slick of colour but needs to be blended and mindful of fallout. Red tends to stain my skin, maybe cos I'm very pale, so does purple 💜 I need to be careful with yellow 💛 shadows too, it looks good incorporated into a few colours look, but just a wash of intense yellow on my lids makes me look a bit unwell. It looks good on some people, just not me, it looks great on darker skin tones

Oh. Makeup mistakes. Well. I used to love a good smokey black eye, didn't have brushes to skill yo execute it nicely. So I got a sponge tip applicator, and DREW a circle round my eye. Sometimes I'd elongate the outer corner so it was like a pointy stripe, and then I'd just colour it in. I'd team that with a frosty pink lipgloss. Or a dark purple lipstick from a Halloween collection from collection 2000. Frosty pink blusher on the cheeks and my eyebrows just left all blonde and sparse and shaped like a tadpole. In my defense, it was 2007 and I was a goth.

I had this vampy but v greasy burgundy red lipstick thing from fantasy makers around the same time, and I guess I was dehydrated or something because my lips were peeling up. And I might have been picking some patches or they were just sloughing off. I simply didn't like it myself. However. Some teacher volunteering for some paperwork handouts in the common lobby area (idk what it was, maybe those registration forms but this teacher and I simply did not know each other, we just interacted for this exchange) commented on it with a furrowed brow and a wrinkled nose, but luckily I was developing a thick skin about alternative beauty standards. So I doubled the hell done and might have even had some lipstick blotches on my teeth when I smiled bigger and went "Doesn't it look pretty?" or something self-affirming 😌 "The Dove/ Girl Scouts/ all the 90s movies & Lizzie McGuire episodes were training me for this" type of moment **even though I objectively did not like it, even if it were a normie pinky nude shade or whatever it'd look just bad because of that classic patchy sheer oily Fantasy Makers formula!** She kept the stink face and shook her head that she didn't like it and I ran out of clever little things to say without sounding like a desperate dork and also without getting myself in trouble, not realizing that this was an adult woman commenting on my budding fashion sense. Then an English teacher that I did recognize complimented my style or the shade or something - I was on my way out so I didnt really acknowledge her too much more than to look over to her quickly & keep smiling politely but hell yeah that English teacher :>

I’ve had so many of those makeup academy artists slather yellow foundation in me-don’t I know I have rosy cheeks? 🙄 Which, yes, thank you, but I’m still extremely cool-toned and pale, and yellow looks baaaaad. The worst, tho, was the woman I knew (no longer a friend for what will become obvious reasons) who demanded everyone in her bridal party self-tan AND wear the same foundation shade, so that we’d all match and allow her to stand out. She wanted to make sure people could easily see her in the photo, because apparently the giant white dress wouldn’t be enough of a clue? (Yes, she did exclude two mutual Black friends from the wedding party for “matching” reasons, and me and the Korean-American woman noped out of there SO fast.)

I’m up there in age but still try to keep up with makeup and skincare and I really have been enjoying your videos for about 3 years. ( I found James a little later) Back in the day, we’re talking late 60’s and onwards , foundation shades for the average woman were based on lightness and darkness of shades. There was no mention of undertone in the products available to the average consumer. If you got lucky, you found a brand that ran a little rosy, or yellow, or neutral but it wasn’t marketed as such. I have JUST discovered in the past two years that I have a pink undertone and it’s made all the difference in my overall look since I’ve been wearing neutral foundations all my life. The yellows were obviously too warm and I avoided them. I’m sure celebrities had access to MUAs who knew what they were doing and it’s so nice now for the general consumer to be able to benefit from KZread expertise. At least now we know what is available and can do our research and watch reviews. Thank you

@@CoyoteWildFlower It takes a little research to find a good match. Ulta is finally beginning to allow swatching as are some department stores. You have to get the closest match and then wear it home to see in natural light and make sure it doesn’ t oxidize. If you’re happy go buy the smallest bottle you can. Not every brand will have a good match for you so it takes time but one day you’ll find a shade that looks beautiful in every light. If you really are my generation find a REALLY GOOD moisturizer because it can make a huge difference. If you are going to wear foundation you will have to do some kind of gentle exfoliation at least once every two weeks, once a week if you can- depends on your skin. Good luck. It’s never too late. ( My mom was an Irish redhead and was always in the fair to light shade range but Italian redheads can have an olive undertone and not all brands offer that undertone especially in the lighter ranges.).

I also didn't know about the makeup side of KZread, in 2010 I only watched gaming content lol. Anyway, I remember ALL the foundations back then were yellow tone. I went to a youth group event at my church in the middle of winter and people thought I had tanned or went on vacation cuz it was so dark and it was the lightest shade I could find. 😂 also in middle school, the only eye makeup I knew was "smokey eye" so I asked my mom to help me with it for dances. You should be a diplomat for the beauty industry. So calm and positive. Nearly caved in on Nikki's nose though 🤭💜

There is a whole subreddit called r/badmuas dedicated to terrible makeup done for celebrities. Like insta models to TV shows to singers.

That second picture of Tyra just did more for my self esteem than anything else in my life. She's so gorgeous, but WOW is that ever a bad photo.

I really appreciate that you always explain why the particular makeup doesn't work and how it would work, instead of just saying it's horrible 💜🖤

Omg when I first started doing winged liner I would leave it totally rounded at the end. Like I’d just draw a straight line out and leave it like that 😂 no sharp pointed end, just a dull line with a thick eyeliner pen. Horrendous I’m telling you LOLLLL

I love the explanations of how these makeup applications could be refined to work better. Also wish this had been around when I was learning to do my makeup (as in, why didn't someone tell me to customize my strip lashes???).

Love so much today's makeup, I would love to recreate it. Your eyes look so perfectly shape. Love this kind of videos were we evaluate the performance of the makeup upon the person who is wearing it.
