The World Should Recognise Jerusalem As Israel’s Capital

__________________________
Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel has sparked outrage around the world. The Palestinian ambassador to London claims Trump’s move amounts to ‘declaring war on 1.5 billion Muslims’, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has warned that the US could ‘plunge the region and the world into a fire with no end in sight’.
But why all the fuss? According to many of Israel’s supporters, it’s no secret that Jerusalem has been the de facto capital of Israel since its creation. Jerusalem is home to Israel’s Parliament and Supreme Court. It’s where both the Israeli Prime Minister and the President reside. But more than that, Jerusalem has been the spiritual and cultural capital of the Jewish people for thousands of years. Sure, there might be some disputes over a few neighbourhoods and holy sites. But every other country across the globe has the right to choose their own capital. Why not the world’s only Jewish state?
Others warn, however, that symbolic recognition of Jerusalem would be a mortal blow for the currently frozen Israeli-Palestinian peace process. According to the 1993 Oslo Accords, the final status of Jerusalem is meant to be discussed in the latter stages of peace talks - so Trump’s move stalls further progress and rules out US involvement in any future deal. And let’s not forget that East Jerusalem has been occupied by Israel for over fifty years, giving Israel dominion over hundreds of thousands of Palestinian residents and some of the most fiercely contested holy sites in the world. Why should the world recognise Israel’s sovereignty over land that doesn’t belong to it? The Palestinians insist that any two-state peace agreement must also include East Jerusalem as their own capital. So not only would it be a bad move for peace and stability - recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital would be a denial of the fundamental right of the Palestinian people to their own homeland.

I will never understand how the fact that someone lived somewhere thousands years ago gives this person more right to be in that place than the person who lived there a generation ago! I am not against Israel as such, the people are there now and the only solution is to work out how to make the situation just for Israelis and Palestinians. But the notion that Jews have more claim to that land than Palestinians is ridiculous.

Thank you! I felt like I was the only who was confused by that. They keep repeating the point that the jews have a right to the land because they were there 3000 years ago, which sounds completely nonsensical to me. It's as if a guy forces his way into your home and says, "Hey, this used to be my house 30 years ago, so now it's mine. Fuck off." And then when you protest, the police show up and say that the intruder has a point and comes up with a solution: give the guy half of the house or you'll get kicked out. Messed up isn't it?

@Viktor Zalesak That was a ridiculously long retort that doesn't actually address the issue. Read the main comment here again. It shouldn't matter if anyone lived there a thousand years ago or that they were even the first people in the land. If we started giving land to people who first settled there, the world would be in utter chaos. Modern Israelis came in and displaced the recent inhabitants by force. And then they argued that that was ok bc they lived there once upon a time. That's like an intruder coming into your home and saying it's his now because his family lived there 3000 years ago. Ridiculous logic.

I am sorry to say that this claim can be presented by a person who does not know history of a region (ancient or recent), the Jews and the Palestinians. I'll make an example: If the Tibetans people had been forced out form the place they are living and practicing their cultural and spiritual lives for centuries (no matter by whom). Then after some time another group of people moved there and lived there for a generation, would it say that the newcomers has more right to be there than the Tibetans who keen to return to the land of their ancestors with the unquestioned spiritual and cultural deep connection to that place? I'll let you guess who are the Tibetans in this example.

Absolutely ridiculous and irrelevant to point this quote out as a guiding principle or a way of life of all Jews or Israelis. His opinions don’t apply to all of the Israelis! Do your opinions apply to all of the people who live in your country? Of course not! You know that there are also Jews who are called “Neturei Karta” who deny the existence of Israel and the Holocaust?? So what does it mean? That all Jews and Israelis think the same? They are a minority group within the Jewish community. We are divided too within our community. That’s the way of life, all around the world. This person is an individual and holds a far right position and believes that Palestinians should leave the land of the Jews. So what? Does it mean all of the Jews in Israel think the same? Just because he believes it, doesn’t mean he is legitimated to do so. It’s a country, with rules! Not the Wild West! We have many parties in the Israeli government who represent different values and positions of Israelis - Jews, Arabs and all minorities. Romans conquered their lands, Jews are the ethnic people of Judea, they inhabited the land before Islam existed, before arabs existed, how is that even comparable? Besides Romans are not even direct ancestors of Italians and Italians have their own land, it's not like they were exiled from everywhere they went like Jews and it's not like Italians had two thirds of their European population slaughtered in a genocide in the middle of Europe. Those are two completely different things. Per say Italians were descendants of Romans, if they were exiled from their land, but some of them stayed, and then 500 years later France, Switzerland and Austria would sent people to live in their land without them establishing a state or anything and then Italians came back to their land after a genocide was committed against them. Would it be fair if the people living there now wouldn't want to share the land with them, then start a war against them and lose, and then claim that they are being colonized by Italians while living in Italy and not accepting Italians as ethnic people of Italy? Now isn't that kind of funny? Because that's a direct analogy.

Being forthright in your argument is not the same thing as being "nasty." I would find it hard to speak to Britons without contempt, as Jerusalem was only occupied for nineteen years through their contrivance. It was Britain's client state, Transjordan, that occupied the territory that the _Encyclopaedia Britannica_ first called "the West Bank," including eastern Jerusalem. Imagine talking to the Russians about the occupation of Berlin, as though it weren't their fault that the city was occupied (or Turkey likewise with regards to Nicosia and northern Cyprus). Not only was Transjordan a British client state (carved out of the Palestine Mandatory and forbidden to Jewish habitation, nota bene), but it was a Scotsman, John Bagot Glubb, who commanded Transjordan's Arab Legion. British officers were also seconded throughout the Transjordanian army - an army that invaded Israel once the country declared its independence. The Jordanian (as it became, after extending itself to the near side of the River Jordan) occupation of Judea and Samaria was unrecognized save by Britain and Pakistan. Typical of international diplomacy's prejudice against Israel (including the non-recognition of its capital), rather than the liberated territory being reconciled to Israel, Israel was expected to give up the same territory to a heretofore non-existent people called the "Palestinians." There are almost two dozen self-declared Arab states, but that is still too few, according to the world. Another set of Arabs needs another country and it needs to be composed of the land that makes up the heart of Israel. I would struggle discussing such hypocrisy and folly with equanimity.

Olmert is a gem. Repeated the same point over and over again. Not an argument of any sort, just his assertion that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and the palestinians are at fault for not having accepted his ultimatum. Essentially denied that he was shouting all the time and tried to turn it around on the elder palestinian woman. I had to turn my volume down whenever he was speaking, because he was so much louder than the other speakers. As was mentioned during the debate. Just because he shouts does not mean that his arguments are right. And he didn't even have any arguments. He also completely failed to understand that another point raised by the other side: It doesn't matter whether his government was ready to withdraw from the occupied territories. The Israel of Netanyahu is not. Neither was the pre-Olmert Israel. And I doubt Olmert-Israel was. The british speaker was right: there need to be mutual concessions for successful negotiations. I had a look at Olmerts proposal and, honestly, I fail to see where exactly he was supposed to have conceded anything. The big three of palestinian demands are a Right to Return for palestinian refugees (a right that they should have according to international law but that Israel does not grant for non-Jews), East Jerusalem, and a palestinian state in the borders of 1967, i.e. Gaza and the entire West Bank. Olmert's proposal denies a Right of Return and offers a compensation (i.e. a palestinian concession). It would have only returned the arab neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem, while keeping the jewish neighbourhoods that grew in size and number after the annexation of East Jerusalem as part of Israel (palestinian concession). Israel would not fully withdraw from the West Bank, but keep 6% of it, without compensation (i.e. a palestinian concession). Doubtful that they would have done it anyway. According to Oslo II, Israel was supposed to return the entire West Bank to palestinian control by 1997. They didn't do it, kept Area C, i.e the majority of the WB. According to the Roadmap to Peace of the early 2000s, Israel was supposed to withdraw to the pre-Intifada positions and stop and rewind their settlement activities. They didn't do it. The east border to Jordan was supposed to be controlled by an independent international entity (in Olmert's proposal), leaving Palestine only with control over the border to Israel. Again a palestinian concession. Israel has now annexed the Jordan valley. Well, the one (minor) israeli concession would have been building a road connecting the West Bank and Gaza, under palestinian administration but not under palestinian souvereignty.

What gets me is the irony in the Jews behavior, what they're doing is almost genocide which is exactly what nearly wiped them out. And it was the world that liberated them and it was very costly. Palestine as a state with borders did not exist before 1948, more specifically before the end of world war 1 as all of Arabia was part of the Ottoman Empire, so much of the present day Middle East countries “didn’t exist” either. But as a Palestinian I can tell you that each and every person who lived within modern day Palestine before 1948 identified as Palestinians. It is a CULTURAL identity and is distinct from that of other Arabs. Conflation of Palestinian Arabs with the rest of the Arabs is a poor tactic used by Israelis to delegitimize Palestinian identity!

For centuries there was no conflict in the land of Palestine in the 19th century Palestine what's inhabited by multicultural population approximately 86% muslim, 10% christian, and 4% jewish all living together in peace and harmony until the arrival of Zionism. The expulsion of the majority of the Arab population of what became Israel during the state’s establishment was not an unintended consequence of war, but rather a preconceived strategy of “transfer” to ensure the creation of a Jewish majority state. The military blueprint for the ethnic cleansing of Palestine was called Plan Dalet (or Plan D) and was formally approved by the Zionist leadership on March 10, 1948. In 1948, two months before Israel’s unilateral declaration of independence in defiance of the will of the organized international community as it then was at the UN, Zionism’s in-Palestine political and military leaders met in Tel Aviv to formally adopt PLAN DALET, the blueprint with operational military orders for the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. They did not and never would refer to the crime they authorised as ethnic cleansing. Their euphemism for it was “transfer”. Joseph Weitz was the director of the Jewish National Fund’s Lands Department which was responsible for acquiring the land for Zionism’s enterprise in Palestine. One of his diary entries for December 1940 reads as follows: “There is no way besides transferring the Arabs from here to the neighbouring countries, and to transfer all of them, save perhaps for (the Arabs of) Bethlehem, Nazareth and Old Jerusalem. Not one village must be left, not one (Bedouin) tribe. And only after this transfer will the country be able to absorb millions of our brothers and the Jewish problem will cease to exist. There is no other solution.” Plan Dalet called for: Destruction of villages (setting fire to, blowing up, and planting mines in the debris), especially those population centers which are difficult to control continuously. Mounting search and destroy operations according to the following guidelines: encirclement of the village and conducting a search inside it. In the event of resistance, the armed force must be destroyed and the population must be expelled outside the borders of the state.

@ken thomas Hussani is an Arab from Arbia. Hussani is a very well known family. He has no roots in Palestine to tell other people not. Haj Amin Al Hussani was a religious man, a mufti. He wrote in his journal, this - the temple mount where al aqsa is on, is the place of the former Jewish temple of Solomon. He thought that Jews wants to destroy al-aqsa and rebuilt the third temple. Which is nonesense. He had no problem with Mizrahi Jews, beacuse they lived in Islamic countries as Dimmihis, submissive, open to be massacred at any time - and he did create the Farhud in Iraq - murdered hundreds of Jews and expelled 50,000. If you follow his trip, he spread the Nazi Ideology (he worked with the Nazis, met with hitler). He murdered Jews in Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Jerusalem, sfad. He also slaughtered the Jews community in Herbon, that existed thousands of years before the Arab conquest of the middle east. He butchered them in 1929. No 'occupation' back then, because this is not about that. This is a conflict about religion. Haj Amin did not care if turky or egypt will take the land. And this is not true. For example in the 1850's there was twice as many Jews in Jerusalem than Arabs. There was an Arab immigration just as there was a Jewish immigration. The thing is, Jews came back to thier homeland. Arabs came to a foreign land.

This debate is a deflection from the reality of the illegal occupation of Israel. Who cares what the capital is if the people are being subjected to some of the worst humanitarian injustices that have ever existed. The illegal state of Israel is the real problem not the Jewish people who have lived along with their Muslim and Christian brothers for centuries without conflict. Even Orthodox Jews don’t support the illegal state that was created.

The UN has no international legal authority to determine any borders as is stated in their charter. The 2nd speaker is contradicting many International Laws as well as condoning International War Crimes. The British Mandate was the only Internationally Legal Borders that can be claimed. Of that is not true then Jordan, Syria , Iraq, Saudi Arabia and many others also would have no International Legal Borders. Again, the UN in it's doctrine, defines that it has no power to determine any borders. The UN declaration was merely a recommendation.

Flag of Palestine included in the Larousse French Dictionary circa 1939, is blue and white with a Magen David - Jewish star in the middle. Palestinians are Arabs. Never seen anyone saying otherwise. Just like Egyptians are Arabs. Does it mean they are not a coherent people ? Besides, even if the existence of an actual, coherent Palestinian people in 1917 was debatable (just like the idea of the Jews being a people, more than a religion), today it's not anymore. Over more than a hundred years, the current conflict has created two extremely strong identities - Israelis and Palestinians - the existence of which cannot be denied today, regardless of their respectives existence before 1948.

When the Romans conquered Judea, they re-named Judea 'Palestina' which means invaded land and was done as an insult to the Jews as it relates to their long time enemies the Philistines. Over the centuries, other countries and empires conquered the land. When WW1 began, that whole region (what is now Israel, Iraq, Jordan, Syria) was part of the Ottoman Empire and had been for over 400 years. When the Turks were defeated by England, France, and Russia, the entire region was partitioned and made into new states. There were both Jews and Arabs that lived throughout. When there was 1 sliver of land left, Great Britain, who basically became the new landlord due to their conquering of the Turks, was given the mandate and named the land again, Palestine. And there were Arab Palestinians and there were Jewish Palestinians. This was only the 2nd time in world history that a land was named or referred to as 'Palestine' and there has NEVER been a country or independent state called 'Palestine'. The Balfour Declaration written in 1917 stated that the Government of Great Britain supports the establishment of a national homeland for the Jewish people in Palestine. As the conquering country, that was their right. And who were the Palestinian Jews and Palestinian Arabs? The Palestinian Arabs were all descended from people who had emigrated to that region and were originally from Egypt (Arafat), Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Algiers, Libya, etc. Archaelogists have already uncovered proof that there has been a Jewish presence in the land dating back to the time of Joshua. This is the 3rd time in history that there has been an independent Jewish state. Furthermore, since I know you won't take the time to research this yourself, the PLO Charter of 1964 - article 24 "...This Organization does not exercise any regional sovereignty over the West Bank in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, on the Gaza Strip or the Himmah Area." Now just who are the owners and who are the 'occupiers'?

The only reason Jerusalem is a thing is because of Christianity and Islam. Had none of the aforementioned religions come into existence the Jewish people would have had the same chance as the Cherokees when attempting to claim the state of Kentucky as their historical homeland. One can also argue that for three thousand years the Greeks occupied the western coast of modern-day Turkey which include the cities of Istanbul and Ismir, both founded by Geeks. All was lost to Islamic forces from the east a mere 400 years ago and the final expulsion of the Greeks from the region only a hundred years ago. Fat chance the Greeks have got in getting back their historical lands. What then gives the Jewish people such a strong sense of entitlement after an absence of two thousand years?

No, what he’s saying is that Jerusalem should be recognized as the capital as Israel after an arrangement is reached about the final borders of the states of Israel and Palestine. Doing so now would make it so that the Palestinians wouldn’t have enough bargaining “cards” in his words during the diplomacy talks. The motion is about whether the world should recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital now. For those wanting a two state solution, moving embassies to Jerusalem would weaken the Palestinian’s bargaining power. The former prime minister of Israel was for a two state solution, but advocating for the world to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel now would make his proposal harder to achieve. Also, the settlements in the land that is meant to become the state of Palestine make a two state solution harder to achieve. Currently, there are huge tax incentives to join settlements, encouraging Israelis to move to those areas. If a two state solution were to occur now, the Palestinian areas wouldn’t be well connected/ continuous. Chucks of Palestine would be here and there. That simply isn’t a viable state. Jack Straw is right to criticize the settlements (which the former PM of Israel barely if ever mentioned), and his ideas are perfectly in line with a two state solution. In my view, the reality on the ground makes a two state solution impossible, so it’s better to just have Israel become a state for all its citizens (including the Palestinians), while also allowing Jews from the rest of the world as well as descendants of the refugees from the land that is Israel come back to their original grounds.

That's a dumb argument. Israel is one of the smallest countries on Earth. Russia is the largest. Israel, like Russia, has too much land? Israel is a nation-state, the very first nation-state in history. As John Selden, English philosopher noted, the Jews invented the concept of the nation-state. By contrast, Russia is an empire, occupying swathes of non-Russian land. The land we're talking about with regards to Israel is the core of the Jewish civilization. Excepting Egypt, Israel is the only Middle Eastern country that's not a product of European imperialism. Why does the only real and legitimate country need to get smaller? Especially because a made up people (the Palestinians) will use that abandoned land as a terrorist base, same as they use Gaza as a terrorist base. Russia was able to survive invasions of its territory by Charles XII, Napoleon, and Hitler because of its strategic depth on account of its excess land. Israel will be under threat by an unquestionably hostile Arab state carved out of Judea and Samaria.

The Jebusites were, according to the books of Joshua and Samuel from the Hebrew Bible, a Canaanite tribe that inhabited Jerusalem prior to the conquest initiated by Joshua and completed by King David. The Books of Kings as well as 1 Chronicles state that Jerusalem was known as Jebus prior to this event. The identification of Jebus with Jerusalem is sometimes disputed by scholars. According to some biblical chronologies, the city was conquered by King David in 1003 BCE. So the Jews were not the first inhabitants of the land.

Nobody cares about 3000 years ago, people are dying today, children who don´t care about Joshua or Samuel are being killed, their mothers are being killed, their homes destroyed, people are living under disgraceful conditions, please look a little bit beyond that, I think you have the intelligence for it

@@aupti Genocide on Christians? Look at the bullshit coming out of their mouths yet again. I'm a Christian Lebanese we are treated with love and respect from all our Muslim Arab brothers in every country. The Jews that lived in Iraq, Syria, Egypt and Lebanon were all treated with respect and that's a fact. Your country is the one that wanted them in Israel so bad that they decided to do whatever it takes to get them out. "Open a book" Try reading something that is not full of shit, I can smell it from across the screen coming thru your mouth and ears.

This should not even be a debate , the law is clear about this. Israel does not have one atom of sovereignty over Jerusalem. East-Jerusalem is occupied Palestinian territory and all of it must be returned to the Palestinians. That's the law.
