Here we go. The world's cheapest Trombone. This monstrosity might look good enough, but it sucks all the pleasure and enjoyment from playing and makes everything much harder than it should be.

Maxwell Osborn It does happen. When trombone plays in treble clef, it transposes. It is uncommon, however. Clarinet cannot play bass clef because it lacks the ability to transpose its music into it. Bass clarinet can, though mostly does not.

I played trombone in high school. The last time I picked one up was over a decade ago. I haven't watched, or searched for anything related to trombones recently to the best of my recollection. Yet I got this video as a recommendation. Weird.
"the lubricant i prefer in and out of the music world" LMAO
Sooooo glad my old man bought me a Conn 88H when I was in high school. 44 years later I wouldn't trade it for ANY other horn. It's truly one of the greatest trombones ever made.

Doesn't seem like it sounds much worse than a typical student model. Certainly very viable for a beginner, and it looks like the case holds up. Very unlike the trumpet which seemed mainly fit for the pits of hell.

supyoist I'd say it sounded good enough too. but we're wrong hahahahha. a bad or out of tune instrument could turn a kid away from practice. and make a good player sound wonky. I'd say, for practice, it's perfectly fine. but to really know if an instrument is for you, or to really sound your best, you gotta try the real deal.
@hope_and_love

I've taught a variety of instruments and there are really two primary reasons my beginners would quit. One, they were being forced to play, and two, their instrument made it difficult for them to play. If parents insist on the first, at least they should be willing to invest a few hundred dollars on a decent used instrument or a rental to avoid the second. I understand the prices differ between types of instruments, but the difference between a shitty $100 Yamaha guitar and a used $250 Ibanez guitar is beyond description.

This was in my recommended, and I have no idea. I know nothing about trombones or do I care about them. But I have to say I love this guy, don't understand what he's talking about, but he seems great so I subscribed, cheers trombone fella
Look up trombones made by Stagg. Significantly more expensive (my student model was $400), but comparable quality. The slide, in terms of corrosion, was actually worse. My spit turned green, because that's the colour brass corrodes as. With a light tap I completely bent the spit valve out of position. The Case was also awful in its own unique ways, with the handle coming off and all the padding actually being empty space, resulting in a massive case for no real protection. Upon getting it out of my life, rather than donating it to my local high school's music department, I donated it to the drama department. It was better served as a prop that could be bumped and pushed around without fear of damage. The music department actually *rejected* it, a free horn for a cash-strapped music program, because of its quality. As a result, I not-so-endaringly for most of its use called it the 'ghetto-bone'.
i know the perfect accessory for this... a lead tester.

This mess would discourage any kid's starting enthusiastic attitude - get them a better instrument in the first place - don't destroy their favorite new toy with Chinese crap.
Swap mouthpieces with something that is usable and larger, might fix some intonation issues if the instrument and improve quality. Overall seems like it would be good for marching :) probably the only practical use though.

Yea I was actually wondering how it would sound if it didn't have a euphomum mouthpiece. Probably still crappy, but at least it would rule out whether or not the mouthpiece is contributing to the problem.

You are so goddamn sarcastic in every thing you say I love it
This guy is like the Sean Connery of the brass instrument world. I love it!
Thanks! I was about to by that one instead of a Bach for band class back in 2018!
Oh hey I bought one of these once. We used it as a prop for a film. Works great as a prop! I can vouch for the fact that the slide feels like you're scraping material off, though.
I don't know much about music, but I do like this channel.
this is my favorite youtube channel
I think the treble clef on the counterweight is a great touch.
The quality lapping air tightness of the joints and slide contribute greatly to the ability to phrase well. I picked up a trombone at a pawn shop that they just wanted to get rid of. I was able to seal a leak in one of the joints, but I had no remedy for the poor tolerances in the slide. It played a little better.
This completely gives me nostalgia of my first trombone
Why was this recommended to me at the side of a Corvette ZR1 review? Not complaining though that's a really cool vid you got there. thumbs up :)

It seems like it's guaranteed to make the player "clam" a few notes! 🙂 You make it sound much better than any student could, yet it still seems like it would serve best as a wall decoration. (The person could brag, "and it actually can be played!") I'd like to hear a side-by-side comparison, of the same piece, between this cheapie and a really fine instrument. In fact, it would be interesting to hear a quality MID-PRICED "student" instrument, (say $400-500), compared, too! Great videos, Trent! You are obviously a virtuoso brass player.
I think the better thing that come out of this is the mouth piece box, it just seems more fancy then it should be
I use Nivea or ponds cold cream for my slide. It's really slick and fast as well as it lasts me a couple weeks all I need to do is spray it with water when I first put it on
Our directors 10 year old daughter joined us in pep band one day. She brought her own trombone, which was a smaller version, but also plastic and purple.

Very cool Video. I play trumpet and trombone and its pretty fun. Also I just subbed
Gotta love some of that euphomum.
sick video!
If this is the same company, I have a similar model with an F trigger. It was gifted to me by a friend, and I'm getting some okay tone out of it, albeit being 7 years removed from regular trombone playing. I'm still grateful.
I got Startone SSL-45 Bb-Tenor Trombone (case, lubricant, mouthpiece & cleaning rod included) @ Thomann.de 12 months ago for €111. I have to admit the slide needed a proper wash in a lukewarm soapy water to work smoothly, but since then it gives me nothing but pleasure. Best starter kit ever if you don't want to invest a lot of money when you are still not sure if trombone is your thing.
Hmmmm... thats a nice $80 case you have there. And I see it even came with a free trombone. What a bargain!
Thank you for providing this public service. It would prove your point even more to the un-initiated if you played those excerpts back-to-back with a quality instrument.

Sounds like a Bugle for some reason but it sounds pleasant to me because hear this, I remember those Brasswind Sounds in old TV Shows such as the Classic Tom & Jerry, Classic Mickey Mouse, and more. I got used to it that I started to like it.
you play well...bravo
Looking at the stocking ends it appears the plating has already worn. Reminds me of my old Conn 88H I used through high school and later college and after years of marching on dusty football fields the grit from the rising dust off the field gets caught on the slide and becomes an abrasive wearing off the stocking plating after a number of years. The horn appears to be well made in your video, however the performance issues you find make this horn almost unusable, and therefore I agree with your assessment. BTW the Conn took a lot of abuse over the years and was later used for marching only. A Bach silverplated 42B was my symphonic horn which I am kicking my self for selling when I was in my mid-30's. I purchased the Bach 42B in 1979 from Sam Ash, a music house in New York for the sum of $400. Boy do I wish I had it back!!!

@rescue270

I went to volunteer with a Salvation Army brass band and discovered that the only parts in bass clef were contrabass tuba and bass trombone. 1st and 2nd trombone were in transposing treble clef, just like trumpet music. You had to be a trumpet player in order to play tenor trombone for them.
This came in a recomended for a nintendo switch video. That's incredible, that is hillarious.
I have a bad trombone. The paint rubbed off even though I have only had it for 3 years. It is a tenor trombone, but it is smaller than all the other trombones. The slide is loud, and the slide lick hit against the slide every time I pulled it in because the slide lock stuck out. The metal inside the slide peels off in flakes and even though I clean it, my spit comes out silver due to the silver flakes.
the slideshow sold me
i bought an etude student trombone for starters and didnt have any corrision and it came with a decant mouth piece and sturdy case and was in tune with itself plus it only cost 115 us dollors
wow i have never listened to his intro before with headphones holy crap the stereo
Great job, OJ! Lol.
5:00 I love how the first image is "MADE IN CHINA" XD
I used to have one that would beat this, I think. It was cheaper and even by looking at it things seemed off. The bell looked to be meant for a bass trombone but the rest was a tenor. It was the most unwieldy instrument I ever used. I gave it freely to a cousin that was into music at the time. I held onto my Bach and my Holton, of course.
I guess I need to listen to a comparison video or something, because as someone who was first chair in an high school orchestra who won state in the 90s, while using an $80 trombone, this sounds fine, aside from being a little out of tune (solved with the tuning slide).
