The world's biggest Kumiko panel? Japanese Woodworking and Carpentry

In this video I have a little fun and make a giant Kumiko panel. Kumiko is a beautiful style of Japanese woodworking or carpentry which is normally done on a very small scale. In this video I use 2x4s to make a 6 foot by 6 foot piece to hang on the wall of my shop. To keep this project simple and fast I use a miter saw to cut all the angles.

After watching your Kumiko "How-To" video, I purchased a Lie-Nielsen low angle block plane, and am now in the middle of my first Kumiko build. I was puzzled when I first saw that thumbnail, because to me the whole point of Kumiko woodwork is that it is small, finely detailed work that looks great partly because of the small size of the parts. However the idea of making gates, doors, fences and garden furniture incorporating these patterns is extremely appealing. I am still going to start making jigs for the small stuff first...

Thanks for the inspiration Mike! Had never heard of Kumon seeing your previous videos, have a couple books and some of the tools required, but I'm still a little intimidated by the little fiddley bits. So I may give this bigger version a go first.😉

Nice work and nice video, as ever 👍 I thing they could work really well in a garden as separation / light screening in place of the same old trellis that everyone else has. Now if only my garden wasn't such a mess...

I figured , u kinda led it there lol , dude I can’t help myself but saying your my favorite u tube woodworker , why? Because you have the correct tools for everything, you don’t hate on other peoples work you simply show the correct way to do things , if I had you” board room “ life would be complete , lol , it would be like loving my dream every day , luckily I am in construction so I get to do allot having my own business but you .. and me are both a quality guy , not how fast it can be done , when I am finished with a project and I know I have done it to the best of my ability , I feel proud and reassured no one ,, no one can bad mouth it . Please keep postin I have literally watched every video of yours at lies twice

Thank you for the very kind words. I really like to hear other professionals who pride themselves on a job well done. I really feel like in the long run that makes more money, though it might not feel like it sometimes. Keep up the good work and stay in touch!

Absolutely makes more money in the long run , word of mouth is allot more trusted then advertising. You can’t ever get a better advertisement then a homeowner who is genuinely happy , I’ll keep in touch , I wanna start posting some stuff , just nervous because there is always a guy or a gang of guys on other peoples vids who have 30 plus years in construction who just love to pick apart other peoples work ( and not in a constructive manor ) I call them keyboard cowboys lol hope all is well talk soon , u have a new kiddo on the way hope all is going well ( I seriously hope I’m not thinking about someone else )

@@Carpenters_Canvas Its all about word of mouth. Even in this day and age of the internet. Don't worry about the haters, just post honest work, some will enjoy it, some will dislike it.
