The World of Deep Sea Rays and Skates
Deep Sea Skates and Rays.
While sharks have become rulers of the open ocean, the skates and rays have conquered the seabed in their place, making up the superorder Batoidea. With their distinct shape, skates and rays have become highly efficient predators of life beneath the sediment. Different species make use of different strategies. Bottom-dwelling species such as skates are often ambush predators, burying themselves in the sediment and lying motionless before snapping up passing creatures. This behaviour also protects the rays from being spotted by predators. In contrast, eagle rays and cow nose rays gather in graceful schools. To hunt, they dig invertebrates from the sediment using their prominent snouts or by beating their wings. Manta rays are truly pelagic, spending their lives in the open ocean and feeding in a very different way.

I’ve witnessed a mantra ray swim above me as I was scuba diving. I could only see the silhouette of it, and it was the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

Seeing the rays breaching the waves and jumping out was the first I've saw. Absolutely mesmerizing- I've got another level of respect of Skates and Rays now :0
I'm seriously excited for the day where this channel has a massive library of nature facts that can be used as a legit study material for schools. Extremely informational, easy to understand and doesn't treat the viewer like an idiot. I love every video
I like to think the creator of these videos found out about chimaeras, became obsessed and went on a deep dive (pun intended) into learning about it, and that’s the entire reason they decided to make videos about the deep sea and all it’s creatures Amazing work as always Leo!

To be completely honest, that is EXACTLY what happened, but substitute Chimaeras for Greenland Sharks! 🙊 I got obsessed, and it led me down a rabbit hole of deep-sea fascination and now here I am, making videos about it and studying marine biology at uni!! Thank you so much for the lovely comment. 😊
That devil ray swarm is just magnificent
I didn't know that they hunted in large packs, very interesting
There's something so calming about your videos, I feel like I'm getting professional content for free. =)
Yes! rays and skates getting their well deserved spotlight! Batoidea are such unique and wonderful animals, amazing video as always!
