THE WOLVERINE (Immortality, Guilt and Honour in Japan) EXPLORED

Ойын-сауық

The trajectory of the X-Men franchise post-Brett Ratner's "X-Men: Last Stand" presented a clear challenge for Marvel and Fox in handling the series. Ratner's approach, characterized by a seemingly indiscriminate elimination of major characters, reduction of mutant powers, and a misuse of iconic storylines, significantly deviated from the universe initially crafted by Singer in the first two films.
This left Marvel and Fox in a predicament, necessitating a delve into the past of the franchise, first manifested in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," a film that failed in every conceivable way. I mean they literally decided to suture Deadpools lips, something Deadpool 2 hilariously rectified. However, a notable course correction was achieved with "X-Men: First Class," which successfully reimagined Professor X's team, offering a refreshing reboot to the series.
"The Wolverine" then brought the narrative back to the present, dealing with the fallout of the catastrophic events in "Last Stand" for the first time.
We see Logan, played with depth and nuance by Hugh Jackman, in a state of self-imposed exile, haunted by the specter of Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey, a painful symbol of love lost and difficult choices made.
Director James Mangold, along with writers Mark Bomback, Scott Frank, and Christopher McQuarrie, perfectly capture the character's ferocity, look, humour and spirit. Distinguished by its engaging storyline, exhilarating action, and another stellar performance from Jackman, the film marks a significant improvement and serves as a rejuvenating chapter in the franchise.

I was outraged what they did to Darwin! It took decade for me to watch ANY X-Men film. It was disgusting and insulting. Just like the family in Logan. We're disposable. No matter how "good" we are. They live longer if only to spread no good.

Personally I thought this movie was a travesty.....travesty...... after hearing how the comic was written I really feel even more cheated. I honestly can't say why I seen I 1 time and it seemed so wrong to me for some reason I have never seen it again. It just didn't feel like wolverine to me. Then having his claws cut off like that just adds insult to injury. It's just my opinion nothing more but it just wasn't my idea of how wolverine would be.

I no longer see it that way at all. Poisoning the Food Supply? You killed the "good" mutant trait too. I don't understand why the government is deceptive at all. No one fights or speaks up anyway. They show us how they fell about us. Yet somehow there's this divide. They are all together. How do you not know each city has tunnel system for every government building.

Definitely one of my fav marvel movies, i always rewatch this and Logan back to back every year or so. Seeing them both one after another is so emotional because the end of wolverine 2013 ends with logan and yukiko leaving saying they will go on an adventure basically and it was uplifting. Then logan starts with him passed out in his cab old and broken, showing that adventure (days of futures past and apocalypse) didn’t end well. Can’t wait to see Hugh Jackman reprise the roll in deadpool 3!

As a longtime 1980's teenage X-men comic book colector, Wolverine has always been a favorite of mine. This film was as good of an adaption of his back story as we could have expected from hollywod... When I first saw this film I was instantly taken back to the Wolverine Origin film and I think they they both mesh well together and seem to compliment each other. Ironicly I'm married to a wonderful lady from Nagasaki for 30+years now and have been to Nagasaki many times including the bomb site and it felt strange watching the A-bomb scene.. But of the two movies, it's a tough choice for me to pick which movie is best..🤔 But I do think Hugh Jackman will always be "Wolverine" in my mind and I would like to see a sequal, but Hugh Jackman is getting long-in-tooth so to speak! 😃 Thanks Nyat for this memorible and look at The Wolverine and bringing back those wonderful feelings when I watched it for the first time! 😃

I just realized if you head canon his memory of Jean's death as symbolic guilt for what he was doing in X2 instead of being literal, you can skip the last stand and go straight here without problem. When I say what he did, I mean he could think (even if it isn’t true) that if he hadn't gone after Striker she might not have had to sacrificed herself. That wouldn’t be the case, but guilt isn't always based on the truth.

Since Shang Chi 2 will still take place in the MCU Multiverse saga, and considering that the Silver Samurai has fought Shang Chi in the comics, what if for Shang Chi 3 it's a dual film with Wolverine? Like, since Wolverine is still the most popular member of the X-Men, Marvel Studios will more than likely continue the tradition of Wolverine solo films apart from the X-Men. So, let's say that at this point the MCU already has had one Wolverine solo film that ends with him going to Japan and meeting up with Shang Chi in the process. Shang Chi and Wolverine become friends, and both have reasons to defeat the Silver Samurai, seeing that fight on screen would be so cool.

As good as “Logan” is the only thing that brings the movie down for me is the fact it’s essentially the same story as “The Wolverine” just in new settings with different characters. Both movies are dealing with his inner struggle and loss of his powers. The only difference is he dies in one. Still think both movies are good though.

Yeah I feel you. He was a good man, leader and partner of Jean and they just have her kill him almost off screen. What a waste

Another example of me loving a near universally hated film. I wish I knew what it was that made me like that. I'll admit though, it's the weakest of the 3.

@@kingofhearts3185 yeah, the whole Merc with a Mouth without a mouth was more than a bit aggravating. I'm not a giant comic book fan but even I know that much. I think they were still trying to shed the campy feel of the X-Men movies.

This is a really good film, let down by a weak third act.
