People often argue on what the best BaW ending is. I personally think there's no good ending. They all have consequences. Even though he was blackmailed, Dettlaff did end up killing hundreds of people. So Syanna and Dettlaff both had to die, but Regis didn't deserve what happened to him. It's amazing how CD Projekt Red plays with your head lol

Pretty much why Blood and Wine was so amazing- there's so much gray morality crap going on. There's no true "villain", just people who've been shafted to the point they resorted to horrible measures. While both Syanna and Detlaff both resorted to very evil means, their anger and spite at the situations at hand were very much justified. Creates believable and somewhat sympathetic antagonists; more games could learn a lot from how they handled this.

Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Dettlaff the Vengeful? I thought not, it's not a story The Nilfgaardians would tell you, It's a Toussaint Legend. Dettlaff Van Der Eretein was a Higher Vampire so old and so powerful, he made the King of The Wild Hunt look like child's play. Dettlaff had fallen in love with a human woman, who when she disappeared from his life, he was convinced she was kidnapped. He was greeted with letters telling of her being held hostage and in order to free her, he would have to kill 5 Toussaint nobleman in an act of Vengeance. Little did he know that the kidnapper was his beloved who had used him from the start, in a mad fit of rage he killed her but was soon struck down by Geralt of Rivia and Regis, a Vampire who's life he had saved. Ironic... he did all those horrible deeds for the one he loved but never for himself.

After beating this vampire, I am surprised as to why anyone in the witcher universe even decides to fight against someone like Geralt. Seriously, the wild hunt stood no chance, the only reason they were strong was because of that frost magic. Once Geralt found how to counter that, it was game over for Imlerith, Caranthir and Eredin.

karankenZ that said, Geralt isn’t supposed to be invincible. He’s extremely skilled but there are many beings that outmatch him. That’s what’s so legendary. Witcher or no, he’s still just a man. That said, Dettlaff’s fight is one of the only ones that made me feel like Geralt only won by being absolutely perfectly on top of his game. The higher vampires were well depicted as basically being dark Demi-gods. Not just monsters, but demons.

Detlaff was emotionally unstable and deserved to be killed in my opinion Imagine you are a powerful and immortal being such as he, would you murder hundreds of innocent civilians simply as a way of getting a woman's attention who was responsible for breaking your heart? Vampires are described as emotionally rich (i think), but that does not excuse his actions One of such great power should learn to have restraint and a sense of responsibility greater than he had; his actions were brutal and unnecessary His disregard for human life during his moment of rage might be attributed to vampires' superiority complex over humans, which is a sign of a severe lacking of the compassion any sapient being should possess, immortal or not Syanna was a wicked person with a terrible grudge on those who did her wrong, but you could argue her intentions were just, what those of Beauclair had done to her, a person of even royal status, over some vague superstition, was wrong She murdered those who wronged her, not indiscriminantly like Detlaff did Planning to exploit a higher vampire was dangerous and foolish and she deserved to be punished, but the innocents of Beauclair did not I remember walking through the streets of Beaucliar during the vampire attack and thought to myself "jesus christ this is overkill"; i was surprised anyone managed to survive at all in the end, the place was bloody devastated lol

I played witcher first, the DS3, my first fromsoft game, then W3 DLCs, and then DS3 DLCs, all of those bosses are harder for most people, even if you take into account, that you get better the more you play. The combat system in witcher offers a lot more variety, but it can also be exploited a lot more if you know your stuff.

I love how tonally dissonant B&W is. In the dreamy vassal state of Toussaint, lies a dark secret. Vampires, able to wipe out the human population of this state by themselves, are hidden amongst the regular townsfolk. And when you really start to explore, you find that not everything was as it seems. For the Beast of Beauclair is none other than Dettlaff, a Higher Vampire, one of the strongest races in the Witcher Universe. Hidden beneath those movie-like hills that stretch beyond Toussaint, is the Unseen Elder, who could kill everyone before they realised they were being annihilated. Even a noblewoman is a Higher Vampire. Blood is hidden amongst the Wine, blending in plain sight, and Geralt must uncover the truth behind the brutal murders. This DLC was perfect.

Blood and wine is my favourite dlc of any game ever because of Dettlaff. He is not the one who ordered the murders, but as a victim of circumstance, he chose to do something way worse than what was done to him and felt totally justified. The arrogance of higher vampires is just through the roof, and that’s why the only way to stop him was to let him have his way, or kill him. No middle-ground, no compromises. And that was what made this story so perfect, none of the choices you made (and this applies to the main game of Witcher 3 as well), felt satisfying. You are never a hero in this game, most people hate you, and you can easily make enemies. The only person in this game that makes you feel loved 100% of the time is Ciri. It’s no happy ever after fantasy story, it’s if the real world was filled with magic and monsters.

Those who say that detlaff acted naively over being hurt by a girlfriend, you do not understand. You should have payed more attention to " the curse of the black sun." That curse in real life, translates to sociopathy or psychopathy. These people are not "psycho," they are often more intelligent than people who are not. Extremely charming, usually very attractive, usually amazing lovers, and completely and utterly devoid of emotion or conscience. They exist for one reason, the emotional destruction of the good people who inhabit the earth. They get a "high." feeding on the sadness and despair of those around them, and indeed try to effect that change. Imagine someone who showed interest in you, married you, made you believe that you were the most wonderful person in the world, then changed and began making you feel sad and distressed, all the while eating this despair energy, and receiving pleasure from your pain. Suddenly they cheat on you, leave you, use you, degrade you, and you find out later that they specifically targeted you for mere amusement, while you , broken, are considering suicide. Detlaff was not justified, but he was also not weak or naive. That curse is real.

  • @theonlylauri

That's a bit of Hollywood depiction of psychopathy, though. They aren't more intelligent than average, or particularly attractive. They are (as you said) devoid of empathy and conscience, but also highly narcissistic, and often badly lacking in impulse control. They can be quite charming and certainly extremely manipulative, mostly because they're such utterly shameless liars. Normal person, when he's lying or stringing together contradictory statements, feels stress that often shows, and when he's caught, tends to be ashamed (or deflect that by becoming angry). Psychopaths don't, and so circumvent a lot of methods we use to detect lying. Their pathologically high self-esteem helps in charming others, as well. They aren't necessarily sadists, either, though when they are, things can get seriously ugly. At the very worst, serial killer ugly. They're just completely amoral. Sure, they may hurt others just for the thrill of power, or to feed their delusions of superiority. Mostly there are sort of rational goals, though, and hurting others, as one said, is just like "squashing a bug". Smarter, more controlled types may poison their work environment and convincingly slander you to steal the promotion you earned. They may also play the sort of social games you depict, and make you look like the bad guy or crazy bitch to others, as well. The sort of scum that fills the prisons all around the world beats a gas station clerk half to death for a case of beer because he forgot his wallet and didn't want to walk three blocks back, and gets promptly caught because he couldn't bother hiding his stupid face (which the police knows perfectly well) from security cameras. Not that it was his fault, because it never is. Still, psychopathy is exactly what came to my mind as well when talking to Syanna. And then I realized just how twisted the Curse actually is. Not only does it seem to create psychopaths, but with its creepy myth it practically makes sure the girls get treated in humiliating, traumatizing ways. Psychopathy appears to be something you're born with, but man, can you ever make it worse that way. O'Dimm would be proud.

Some experimented with them, some were banished. So it could also be, that not the curse made them like this, but the humans around them.

Also known as: Succubus.... in a way. Btw. a good pop culture example for such a character is shown in Gone Girl. Only watched the movie and it is truly amazing and disturbing. But on topic: The curse was never clearly shown as a curse such like uttered by the Crones or similar. It was just said she had one and people acted like she was cursed, which might have actually put a label on her, which was the actual curse. That drove her into being the villain everybody saw in her and she was satisfied by taking rvenge. If all environment acts like you are cursed, you will start believing in this, since the only thing you get is negative confirmation. hence she was in puberty and only about 14 or something? Basically still a child, who got mistreated. And that is all you can do when grown up when you never experienced anything else. Dysfunctional families create dysfunctional offsprings.

No. Curse of Black sun is just superstition. In "lesser evil" Renfri was one of these people, but she also suffered horrible childhood by her mother in law wanting her dead. Then there is Eskel's unexpected child, Deidre. She also was cursed. Apparantely, those born under curse have mutations etc. so, if you kill her in w1, they cut her open and there is no proof for curse of the black sun.

Eredin was the final boss of the Witcher 3. Dettlaff was the final boss of the Witcher, as a game series. Blood and Wine was, after all, the end of Geralt's journey along the Path. And damn if it didn't end well.

Am I the only one who felt right with this boss battle? I felt from the first time Detlaff and Geralt fought that this was inevitable. Even moreso after he set the vampires on the city. The clash of the titans, Geralt and Detlaff. I dunno it just felt like the resolution I was thinking of since the story started.

'You and he are not so different. You've both noble hearts, yet are wont to perform ignoble deeds -- when circumstances force you to, of course.' From the moment Regis said that I felt a showdown was inevitable. The whole 'two sides of the same coin' trope (not to use the term 'trope' to imply its a bad thing).

Perhaps predictable, but QUITE well set up :P investigations of seemingly unconnected murders, the afterparty conversation with Regis, Orianna, Henrietta AND Dettlaff, then Rhena's betrayal; you empathise and understand his outrage, but his minions laying siege to all of Beauclair settled it: no way Dettlaff could walk away. Time to end the Beast of Beauclair! :D

I would like to take a moment to comment on Geralt’s extraordinary feats. Keep in mind that i am a new comer to the series having only played the third installment. Nevertheless, i have seen some glimpses of his achievements (and downfalls) in both the books and the first two games of the series. Before delving into the details i want to inform you that English is not my main language. Therefore, please excuse any grammatical, /vocabulary/spelling errors should there be any. Such mistakes are inevitable as at the time of writing this analysis. Whew, with that out of the way. Let’s begin: Geralt of Rivia has shown some incredible feats during the game. Even more so that what i had expected based on my, albeit little knowledge of the books. He is said to be one of the greats swordsmen in the books. In the games, i truly believe that he became THE greatest. Having learned his last lessons from Vesemir, defeating all of the Wild Hunt’s main players and finally, defeating Olgierd von Everec. An immortal who has undoubtedly mastered his craft based on the countless duels he had been into. Not disregarding the fact that he also was using black magic. A very high and dangerous form of magic. Regarding the Wild hunt, Caranthir is ment to be their strongest. Yet, Geralt managed to defeat him in a duel which is something, Eskel could not. Eskel, based on my limited knowledge of the books is said to have displayed a greater level of swordsmanship than that of Geralt’s. You could argue that Eskel was fighting a completely healthy Caranthir whilst the latter was slightly wounded in his fight with Geralt. Even then, i still doubt that Eskel could have taken him on with all of the Elf’s teleports and use of arcane powers. Geralt has shown to be the better fighter against enemies with teleportation abilities. Another proof of this is Geralt’s “snowball fight” with ciri. She teleprted all around the place. Notwithstanding, Geralt still managed to win (bonus the heartwarming hug between them

Something I haven't seen anyone draw to attention is the emotion in this soundtrack: the wild rage, the fear of a f*cking vampire in berserker mode, the grief of that vampire that aflamed his rage, and still... The theme of a hunter. A hunter of monsters, just another contract

This and the Oligierd fight are two of the greatest boss fight tracks of all time. And if I’m not mistaken, both are optional fights. Unreal that they put in that much work to make two absolute bangers for OPTIONAL FIGHTS.

Every fantasy game should treat the OG legendary beasts like The Witcher treated vampires with Dettlaff, like the final bosses they are, i was fighting Dettlaff imagining i was fighting Count Dracula himself. Imagine a boss fight agaisnt THE Werewolf, THE Ghost, THE Witch, THE Lich, THE Bogeyman, all with a well deserved tough as nails fight.
