"The Wire" Best Opening Season 3, Omar & Brother Mouzone Standoff (S.3, Ep.11)

Ойын-сауық

My favorite "Open" from The Wire - A modern take on classic "spaghetti western" of Brother Mouzone (Michael Potts) confronting Omar, one of the most complex characters that ever appeared on a television show, as portrayed by the great, great, great Michael K Williams)! This is one of my favorite scenes from the The Wire, and thats saying something, as it had many many unforgettable scenes.
The opening of Season 3 episode 11 (entitled "Middle Ground") is the pentultimate episode of the third season. The dialog is electric, and the director's stylistic reference to the Western genre are unmistakable, ironic, and certainly not by accident. Just as Omar's wearing a classic "cowboy duster" is not an accident. Creators Simon and Burns envisioned Omar almost as a character out of a Western: A gunslinger with strong principals. A man who lives by a code.
This riveting scene (a typical Wire 'cold open') is here intact with the opening credits for the full experience (Season 3 had the Neville Brothers version of Tom Wait's 'Down in the Hole').
(Tidbit: any James Bond fan will recognize the Walther PPK as Bond's gun too)
If you haven't seen The Wire (televisions best series, ever) your life is incomplete! Watch the whole thing:

Hahaha it doesnt make much sense, but thats why brother mouzone responds "i admire a man with confidence," suggesting that despite omar being informal and underground, he is a formidable opponent. Just another great example of the dialogue in this show that always has more to it than you first think

@@tomlee2481 It does make sense; Omar is saying that a gun with that much firepower is lethal even if the shot placement isn't perfect. Omar is also bragging about what a good shot he is; his idea of "missing" is a stomach shot instead of a headshot.

@@cm9241What makes it ironic is the smarter military personnel know that and tend to still humanize, but they usually aren't the grunts. Usually they're the specialists, the medics, the officers (some though). And supremely specialized shooters such as snipers will still have at least some form of respect for other snipers, even if hostile. Doesn't mean they won't bestow upon them any mercy. You can still respect a man's skills even if you don't resepct him as a person for what he does, how he speaks, etc.

This scene contains some of my favorite bits of dialogue: -"I keeps one in the chamber in case you ponderin'" -"Even if I miss I can't miss" -"Omar listenin'" The lines are pared-down to the bare minimum of words, but Michael K. Williams makes them seem like poetry.

That was his deal, he was smart, so he knew being well dressed & well spoken gives the image of a 'law abiding citizen', if he was swaggering around with a backwards cap giving it the big'un etc the cops would have been all over him. His first line of dialogue was to calmly say hello to a police officer, most of the other gangster kids would run away when they saw the cops.

Brother Mouzone was carrying a Walther. It appears to be a PPKS model not a PPK. Both were .380 caliber semi-auto pistols but the PPKS had a shorter barrel and the same 7 shot capacity. I carried a PPKS in the 70's and early 80's off duty in violation of Department Policy simply because the gun was so concealable and so much easier to reload than the department regulated S/W 5 round, 2 inch revolver. I was young, married and had children and figured it was better to survive a gun fight and be in violation of department policy than comply with policy and leave a widow. Years later I was involved in an OIS but by then automatics were authorized.

I've noticed a weird fascination with trains in the last few episodes of Season 3. Earlier Mouzone says "Slow trains coming," then the train in this scene, after Stringer and Avon say their goodbyes a train can be heard in the background, and then finally the song that plays during the ending montage is called Fast Train. I haven't figured out exactly what that means but in a show as tightly made as The Wire, I'm sure it's no coincidence.

***** I guess it's like a sense of inevitability. Trains are always gonna keep coming and going, just like life on the street. One direction, stuck on a track, day in day out.... Also, as this scene is played out like an olde Western showdown, the building of the railroad was a central part of what made America so I think it may hark back to that (think Once Upon A Time In The West). For Stringer Bell too, it's the "end of the line" ;) Plus, in general, it adds to the background ambience and realism of the show. But yeah, with The Wire being as multilayered as it is, who knows?

+Kolbe Howard Baltimore is a major rail hub for CSX as well as being a southern seaport. There are always freight trains traveling through the city at all hours.

Omar and Brother Mouzone. I wished they gave us more screen time together. I wished Omar could have reached out to Brother Mouzone for help against Marlo. Can you imagine how cool that would have been?!
